1. Different greetings and endings
T: What are the differences between frmal and infrmal language? Can yu find it?
T: We use different greetings and different endings.
(1) Different greetings
T: Well, can yu classify these greetings? Which are frmal? Which are infrmal?
(2) Different endings
T: And when we write t thers, we use the endings differently.
2. Using idims
T: What ther differences can yu find?
We can use idims like “It rains cats and dgs.” in infrmal language. Well, what are idims?
T: Idims are phrases and sentences that d nt mean exactly what they say. Even if yu knw the meaning f each wrd yu see r hear, yu may nt understand the idim because yu dn’t understand the culture behind it, e.g. It rains cats and dgs.
T: Usually we use idims in spken English. They are infrmal. What idims d yu knw?
T: D yu knw these idims? What d they mean?
T: Language is wnderful. Read mre, and yu will learn mre.
3. Using cntractins and abbreviatins
T: What abut cntractins and abbreviatins?
T: Cntractins are shrt frms f wrds when apstrphe replace letters, e.g. we’ll, she’s, can’t. Abbreviatins use nly the first letters f a name r phrase, r leave ut letters t shrten a wrd, e.g. UK, Dr. They are bth used in infrmal language.
T: What ther cntractins and abbreviatins d yu knw? Wrk in grups.

1. Classify the expressins
T: Nw can yu classify the expressins crrectly?
T: S frmal language is used fr unfamiliar peple r teachers while infrmal language is fr friends and parents.
2. Imprve Kitty’s letter
T: Kitty is writing t J. K. Rwling, the British writer, t tell her smething abut Harry Ptter.
