    I. Teaching aims and learning bjectives
    By the end f the lessn, students shuld be able t:
    1. knw the differences between British English and American English;
    2. use British English and American English crrectly.

    Step 1 Presentatin
    1. An invitatin
    T: One day, Hb and Eddie were watching TV at hme. Just then, Pstman Pat came. He brught Hb and Eddie a mail. It was an invitatin.
    Dear Hb and Eddie,
    We sincerely invite yu t ur rbt shw.
    By then, there will be many rbts frm different cuntries. Sme are specially designed t make delicius fd, and ther rbts are designed t d hmewrk.
    We expect yu t cme.
    Place: Times Square, New Yrk, the USA
    Date: 15-16 May 2015
    Rbt Shw Centre
    T: Hb and Eddie were very willing t g t the USA.
    They culd nt nly enjy the rbt shw but als visit their e-friend, Snpy.
    S they bked tw air tickets at nce.
    But while they stayed in the USA, they met sme prblems.

    2. On the first day
    T: What happened n the first day? Guess!

    T: After arriving at the htel, Hb and Eddie felt very hungry. Read the fllwing dialgue and find ut what happened t them.
    Hb and Eddie: Excuse me, where is the nearest restaurant?
    One American: It’s n the first flr.
    Several minutes later …
    Hb and Eddie: Where is the restaurant? There’s a health center n the first flr.
    S: D yu knw why? In America, they call the grund flr the first flr.
    3. Differences in vcabulary
    T: Lk at the screen and find the differences between British English and American English in vcabulary.
    T: Put each f the wrds int the prper bx.

    4. On the secnd day
    T: On the secnd day, Hb and Eddie came t the rbt shw. They saw many rbts. Hb was interested in the ne that was gd at telling jkes. Nw listen t ne f the jkes:
    One day, n a train, an Englishman met an American. The American is utging and willing t making friends with thers. After sme greetings, he asked the Englishman, “What’s yur jb?” The Englishman answered, “I’m a clerk.” The American said in surprise, “Clck? Yur jb is t tick tick all day lng?”
    T: Hb culdn’t understand the jke. Hw abut yu?
    T: Yes. The prnunciatin f “clerk” in British English is similar t that f “clck” in American English.
    5. Differences in prnunciatin
    T: Take turns t read the wrds n the screen t yur partner.

    6. The third day
    T: On the third day, after the rbt shw, Hb and Eddie walked arund Times Square t buy a gift fr Snpy. There they were surprised t find sme spelling mistakes n the advertising bards, e.g. theater, neighbr, clr, jewelry and center. Are they really spelling mistakes?
    T: They are spelling differences between British English and American English.
    7. Differences in spelling
    (1) –re/-er theatre/theater
    (2) –ur/-r clur/clr
    (3) –ll-/-l- jeweler/jewler
    (4) –mme/-m kilgramme/kilgram
    (5) –gue/-g dialgue/dialg

    8. The furth day
    T: On the furth day, Hb and Eddie paid a visit t Snpy. Read the dialgue between Snpy and them. Here we can find anther difference—differences in grammar.

    T: Use American English t cmplete the fllwing article.

    During this trip t the USA, Eddie and I als achieved a lt abut the differences between British English and American English. They are mainly different in ____________, _____________, ____________ and ____________.
