Fr birds such as superb fairy-wrens, which perfect their sngs with parental teaching, it was thught that sund perceptin (认知) began after hatching. But when it became bvius that mther birds were intentinally singing t their eggs, “We knew we were n t smething,” says Snia Kleindrfer, a bird eclgist at the University f Vienna.
Clmbelli-Négrel, Kleindrfer and a clleague reprted in 2014 that superb fairy-wrens learn t distinguish between sunds f their wn species and thers while still in their eggs. In a new study, that ability appears t extend t at least fur mre bird species.
In birds and humans, a drp in the embrynic (胚胎的) heart rate suggests attentin t a stimulus (刺激). In the scientists’ earlier wrk, unhatched fairy-wrens’ heart rates slwed in respnse t repeated sunds f their wn species, but nt thers.
T investigate whether this phenmenn is mre widespread amng birds, the team als turned its attentin t the embrynic heartbeats f ther bird species. The team measured the heart rates f 109 unhatched chicks befre, during and after expsure t playbacks f sngs frm their wn species r thers. Then the scientists lked at whether 138 embrys stpped paying attentin r became habituated t, repeated sunds f unfamiliar individuals f their wn species singing.
