“Why d these pstcards ask yu t cme t tea?” I asked my grandmther. “Because this is hw we cmmunicated befre we had a telephne,” she said. “I wuld pst a pstcard in the mrning mail, and a friend wuld receive it that afternn. Then she wuld pst a reply that arrived in my mail the next mrning.”
I was surprised. Life withut a phne sunded like smething ut f the wrld. Cnnecting by pstcard seemed as unexpected as using a carrier pigen (信鸽). I had frgtten abut my grandmther’s pstcards until lckdwns (封锁) restricted ur trips t seeing ur three granddaughters. Remembering my grandmther’s album, I bught several sets f cards and every few weeks, I’d write ntes and mail them. The girls smetimes respnded with brief thank-yu texts.
Then ne day I pened my mailbx and sptted three hand-addressed envelpes. They were frm my granddaughters, each thanking me fr the pstcards. The ntes captured their disappintment with the pandemic and described hw my messages had cmfrted them.
I had been thinking hw my grandmther had accepted the telephne as a new way t keep relatinships. Like her, I accepted the girls’ preferred mde f cmmunicatin and texted my thanks fr their letters. Teenagers wh start the schl day really early are likely t weigh slightly mre than thse wh start later. That's the finding f a new study f nearly 30,000 Canadians between the ages f 10 and 18.
Getting t little sleep can put kids at risk fr a number f prblems. Sleepy teens are mre likely t be verweight t have truble cncentrating and t struggle in schl. Genevieve Gariepy, wh wrks at McGill University in Mntreal, Canada, wanted t knw hw earlier schl start times night be cnnected with weight.
"Overweight in teenagers is a big prblem in Nrth America," she says. The number f verweight kids has grwn ver the past 30 years. Abut ne in three American and Canadian teens are nw verweight. Kids wh dn't sleep enugh may be at higher risk. S Gariepy decided t fcus n the impact f schl start times.
Her team cllected start times fr 362 Canadian schls. Then they asked students at thse schls t give their height and weight. In all, they cllected data frm nearly 30,000 10-t 18-year-lds. Amng 6th-t 10th-graders, thse wh started schl earlier were likely t be slightly heavier fr their height. Every 10-minute delay in schl start time was cnnected, n average, with a slightly lwer weight amng students wh were the same sex, age and height. Hwever, the difference is slight. Healthy eating and getting enugh exercise will play a bigger rle in keeping a healthy weight.
Because the study cmpared kids wh already started schl at different times f day, it's nt clear that changing schl start time wuld help heavier kids lse weight. T knw fr sure, researchers wuld want t cmpare the same kids befre and after changing t a later schl start time.
Still, the study is a gd start, says Cra Cllette Bruener, a dctr at Seattle Children's Hspital in Washingtn. The findings add t a grwing pile f evidence that later schl start times might be better fr teen health, she says.
    8. What is the finding f the new study?

    B. Healthy diets and enugh exercise help reduce weight.
    C. Teens wh start schl earlier are a little verweight.
    D. Teens wh start schl earlier d nt perfrm well.
    9. T keep a healthy weight, teenagers need______________.
    A. much sleepB. earlier schl start time
    C. less sleepD. a balanced diet and enugh exercise
    10. Hw did Gariepy's team get their findings?
    A. By recrding the teens' weight.
    B. By checking the teens' physical health.
C By cmparing different sets f data.
    D. By measuring the teens' height.
    11. What des Cra Cllette Bruener think f the study?
    A. It has inspiring value.B. It lacks further supprt.
    C. It needs imprvingD. It is well designed.
    D
