The State f Califrnia is depending n its frests t help cut dwn planet-warming CO2. But that climate-change strategy may be risky, as new research frm the University f Califrnia, Irvine(UCI)reprts that trees in Califrnia’s muntains and pen spaces are dying frm wildfires and ther pressures — and fewer new trees are filling the blank.
“The frests are nt keeping up with these large fires,” said study c-authr James Randersn, the Ralph J. and Carl M. Cicerne Prfessr f Earth system science at UCI. Acrss the whle state, tree cver area has drpped 6.7% since 1985. “These are big changes in less than frty years,” he said.
