Present some sentences from the text to the students and lead them to understand the usage of indirect speech by asking questions.
Can you find out what the following sentences have in common?
An expert who has studied polar bears for many years said that from the position of its dead body,the bear appeared to have starved and died.
Experts claimed that low sea-ice levels caused by climate change meant the bear could not hunt seals as before,so it had to travel greater distances in order to find food.
Climate scientists have warned that if we do not take appropriate actions this warming trend will probably continue and there will be a higher price to pay.

Rules:Direct speech reports the exact words of the speaker.Indirect speech reports what a speaker said in our own words.
If we want to change direct speech into indirect speech,we will change tenses,pronouns,and other words when necessary.First,if a verb in quotation marks is in present tense,change to the corresponding past tense;if a verb is in simple past tense,change to the past perfect tense.Second,person pronouns change according to the person of the object of the reporting verb.Third,adverbs that show nearness in direct speech are usually changed into words that show distance in direct speech.
Activity 2 Find out the differences between direct speech and indirect speech in each sentence and state their changes.
