Turists visiting the Canary Islands can ften hear the lcals cmmunicating ver lng distances by whistling—nt a tune, but the Spanish language. The lcals are cmmunicating in Silb, a much mre widespread use f whistled languages. In at least 80 cultures wrldwide, peple have develped whistled versins f their lcal languages when the circumstances call fr it.
Whistled languages are almst always develped by traditinal cultures that live in muntainus regins r in dense frests. That's because whistled speech carries much farther than rdinary speech r shuting, says Julien Meyer, a linguist wh explres the tpic f whistled languages. Skilled whistlers can reach 120 decibels (分贝)—luder than a car speaker. As a result, whistled speech can be understd up t 10 times as far away as rdinary shuting can. That lets peple cmmunicate when they cannt get clse enugh t shut.
Whistled languages wrk because many f the key elements f speech can be imitated in a whistle. We distinguish ne speech sund frm anther by minr differences in their sund frequency patterns. Whistlers can express all f these distinctins by varying the pitch (音高) f their whistle. And the skill can be adapted t any language, even thse that have n traditin f whistling.
Hwever, whistled languages are disappearing rapidly all ver the wrld, and sme—such as the whistled frms f the Tepehua languages in Mexic—have already disappeared. Mdernizatin is largely t blame, says Meyer, wh pints t rads as the biggest factr. “That's why yu still find whistled speech nly in places that are very, very remte and that have had less access t rads,” he says.
Frtunately, there is still a ray f hpe. UNESCO has listed tw whistled languages—Silb in the Canary Islands, and a kind f whistled Turkish—as elements f the wrld's intangible cultural heritage. Such attentin can lead t cnservatin effrts. In the Canary Islands, fr example, Silb is nw taught in schls. “If peple hadn't made that effrt, Silb wuld prbably have disappeared,” says Meyer. There, at least, the future f the whistled language lks bright.
5.What can be learned abut Silb?
A.It is an endangered tune.
B.It is emplyed t entertain turists.
C.It is used in mre than 80 cultures.
D.It is a whistled versin f Spanish.
6.What are whistled languages mainly used t d?
A.Pass n secret infrmatin.
B.Get messages acrss ver lng distances.
C.Imitate the sund patterns f ther languages.
D.Shw minr differences between speech sunds.
7.Why are whistled languages disappearing accrding t Meyer?
A.Lack f skilled teachers.
B.Cntact with mdernity.
C.Difficulty in learning them.
D.Ppularity f fficial languages.
8.What is the authr's attitude twards the future f Silb?
A.Uncertain. B.Dissatisfied.
