After school one winter day, Jack’s mother told him to go out and play in the snow.
“You can make a snowman before your father comes home,” said his mother.
Jack collected everything that he needed and went out. In the yard (院子), Jack started his work. Through a window, someone was watching Jack play. It was his new neighbor Naoko.
“Can I help Jack make his snowman, Mum?” Naoko asked her mother.
“Sure!” said her mother.
Naoko ran outside to Jack’s yard.
“Can I help you finish your snowman?” she asked.
“Yes,” said Jack.
“What can I do?”
“I need one more snowball for the head.”
“But snowmen only have two snowballs. One is for the body and the other is for the head.”
“No, snowmen always have three snowballs,” said Jack. “I don’t think I need you to help me.”
Naoko walked into her own yard and began to make her own snowman. Soon Naoko finished her snowman.
Jack also finished his snowman. And his father was driving up the street.
Just then the head fell off Jack’s snowman!
“Oh no!” Jack shouted.
Naoko heard that and ran over to see what the problem was.
“I’ll help you,” said Naoko.
Together, Jack and Naoko finished the head very quickly.
“Thank you,” said Jack.
“You’re welcome. I like your snowman better,” said Naoko. “Mine doesn’t have a nose.”
Jack pulled (拔出) his snowman’s nose out. It was a carrot. He broke it into two pieces and gave one piece to Naoko.
