China’s national parks: The Combination of nature and culture
China is vast and beautiful. It includes just about every type of landscape and wildlife species imaginable, from tropical jungle to Himalayas. These massive ecosystems are home to an incredible wealth of biodiversity, including rare plant life and popular species like the beloved giant panda.
Sanjiangyuan National Park
The first national park to be trialed as part of the new system was Sanjiangyuan—the source of the Yangtze, Yellow and Mekong (Lancang) rivers. Situated in Qinghai province in far northwest China, the park covers 123,000 sq km of high-altitude wilderness on the Tibetan Plateau. Protected species include snow leopards, wild yaks, and Tibetan gazelles and antelope.
Wuyi Mountain National Park
Both a Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wuyi Shan is one of the world’s largest subtropical primordial forest systems. Its dramatic gorges and rivers are home to thousands of types of protected wildlife like migratory birds and rare amphibians. And many visitors come to explore the archaeological remains of Han City as well as numerous 11th-century Daoist temples and shrines.
Giant Panda National Park, Sichuan
China has been working hard in recent decades to reestablish the endangered giant panda, creating 67 panda reserves across Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. The new Giant Panda National Park encompasses these reserves and is home to more than 1000 wild pandas.
Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park
Situated in the Changbai Mountains along China’s border with Russia, this park covers the wild habitats of the big cats and has seen success in encouraging leopards and tigers to repopulate. Since 2017, 12 Siberian tiger cubs and 11 leopard cubs have been born here. Nearby is Jingpo Lake National Geopark near Mudanjiang in Heilongjiang province, with lakes, volcanic craters and ancient lava flows.

A cousin sent an email saying she had been out cutting her lawn (草坪) for two hours in the hot Nebraska sun and the smell of grass was in her nose. She said it reminded her of her dad working outside.
“Not a breath of cool air out there, unbearable for all the crew but Dad. During their lunch break, Dad would have a couple of sandwiches and skip the iced tea. He’d have creamed coffee. That was my hero—loyal, very, very hard-working, so wonderful. Funny what a smell can remind you.”
Her dad and my dad were brothers. There were five boys in the family. The boys were cut from the same cloth. Every one of them enjoyed hard work.
It wasn’t easy raising a large family during the Depression (大萧条), yet their farm was the first one for miles around to have electricity. Their dad made a small power station using batteries. Resourcefulness (足智多谋) was second nature.
When my parents married, they didn’t have much. When they got a dog, he managed to build a doghouse from wood.
I think of my dad when I see a barbecue. He loved to grill (烧烤). Burgers, hot dogs, steak. For years, he and Mom hosted a huge Fourth of July brunch and grilled pancakes and sausages before the neighborhood parade.
He loved grilling out especially when it was hot — 90℉ (about 32℃) was good, even 100℉ (about 37.8℃) wasn’t too high. That was also his favorite time to mow (割草). He and all his brothers were most comfortable outside. It came from the farm imprint, spring planting, summers in the fields and fall harvest.
At my dad’s retirement party, at a large university where he had worked his way up to purchasing director, he was standing by himself, looking at the crowd, having a good time when he laughed and said, “I never did want a desk job.”
I don’t think I realized until that moment how much our dad loved us. He had enjoyed his career and the people he worked with, but until the day he died, there was nothing as beautiful as a stand of wheat or a field of corn.
Here’s to dads everywhere who work hard and do what needs to be done for the love of family.
24.What made the cousin think of her Dad?
A.The hot sun. B.The smell of grass. C.The unbearable crew. D.The hard work.
25.What can be inferred about the brothers of the family?
A.They had similar sizes. B.They had similar clothes.
C.They had similar hobbies. D.They had similar qualities.
26.Which of the following best describes the author’s father?
A.Humorous. B.Creative. C.Devoted. D.Demanding.
27.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To show her respect for fathers. B.To stress the importance of working hard.
C.To show that raising a family is never easy. D.To describe the important role a father plays in a family.
Picture this: you’re having trouble sleeping or your digestive system is playing up, so you go to your doctor expecting some pills. But, instead, you walk away with a ticket to the ballet or instructions to join a choir(唱诗班).
This is social prescribing(处方), and it’s taking off in a big way with hundreds of practices in England regularly referring their patients to take part in cultural activities, with a focus on prevention, early intervention, and management of long-term illness.
“Social prescribing can enable people to manage existing health problems, to connect and to grow in confidence,” says Pandya. As well as this, the arts can lower daily stress through even very short amounts of arts engagement each day such as listening to music. Even simply reading a book has numerous positive benefits. It can reduce stress, promote self-reflection, strengthen social skills, and increase knowledge, which can have an impact on educational and career success.
But why are cultural experiences so effective at improving your well-being? Art in any form, whether creating or observing, reduces the stress hormone(荷尔蒙). It also releases the feelgood hormones, which help you combat stress and pain. In a series of pioneering experiments, professors at UCL examined volunteers’ brains as they looked at 28 images. They found that the same part of the brain that gets excited when you fall in love with someone is stimulated when you look at works of art. Viewing art also causes an increase in dopamine(多巴胺), leading to feelings of intense pleasure.
Debs had been struggling with her mental health and was referred to art therapy courses. “Social prescribing addressed my wellness rather than my illness. The focus was on what I could do well, not what all the problems were. It allowed me time to heal myself. It totally transformed my life.”
28.What’s the function of the 1st paragraph?
A.To introduce a choir. B.To show a picture. C.To introduce the topic. D.To attract readers’ attention.
29.The experiences belong to social prescribing except ______.
A.doing an experiment. B.listening to music. C.joining a choir. D.reading a poem.
30.What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4?
A.The reason why art reduces the stress hormone.
B.The finding of a series of pioneering experiments.
C.The finding that the same part of the brain is stimulated.
D.The reason why art improves one’s health and happiness.
31.What’s Debs’ attitude towards social prescribing?
A.Grateful. B.Concerned. C.Discontent. D.Neutral.
China’s first self-developed narrow-body jet, the C919 from China Eastern, successfully completed its first commercial flight on Sunday, marking in a new era of aviation (飞机工业) that applies Chinese manufactured aircraft, industry experts said.
“Seated in the China-made passenger aircraft C919, I felt extremely excited and proud,” Zhang Keli, a passenger from Beihang University in Beijing, said when she shared her memorable experience with People’s Daily. “Both the take-off and landing were as smooth as wide-body aircraft, and the whole flying process is terrific. The first C919 aircraft will be put into commercial operation on a regular basis between Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport in Sichuan province. With the delivery of more C919 aircraft, the carrier plans to gradually expand its commercial services to more Chinese cities.
A second C919 jet is scheduled to be delivered in mid-June. China Eastern will receive a total of three C919 aircraft over the next two years, according to Xinhua News Agency.
From Friday, passengers were able to book tickets for C919 flights between Shanghai and Chengdu, with the first flight scheduled to depart Shanghai on Monday, according to aviation data and solution service provider VariFlight.
32.What can we learn about the C919?

五、七选五
We are all different. We have different hair and different eyes. 36 So Why in the world would we expect everyone to think and learn in the same way? As a matter of fact, it is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.
I’ll never forget encountering in high school a kid from Tonga named Fine Unga. At first, I was totally frightened by him. I mean the guy was built like a tank, strong as a bull. We looked, dressed, talked, thought, and ate differently. The only thing we had in common was football. So how in the world did we become best friends? 37 I never quite knew what Fine was thinking or what he would do next, and vice versa. That was seriously refreshing. I especially enjoyed being his friend when a fight broke out. He had strengths I didn’t have and I had strengths he didn’t have. 38
Boys, I am glad that the world isn’t full of a bunch of clones who act and think exactly like me! Thanks to the diversity, the world diversity usually calls to mind racial and gender differences, 39 There are also endless differences in language, physical features, family backgrounds, religious beliefs, lifestyle, interests, skills, and so on.
40 Since this diversity around you is always expanding, you’ve got an important decision to make regarding how you are going to handle it. There are three possible approaches you can take: Level 1: Avoid diversity. Level 2: Tolerate diversity. Level 3: Celebrate diversity. Let’s share our similarities and celebrate our differences.
A.but there’s so much more to it.
B.Together we made a great team.
C.Maybe it was because we were so different.
D.We like different foods and different stories.
E.but there are many more different people in our lives.
F.None of us are any better or any worse than anyone else.
G.The world is a great melting pot of cultures, races, religions and ideas.

What caught my attention first was a 15th-century qinghua bowl in a breathtaking 58 (exhibit) of Chinese porcelain. It 59 (vivid) illustrated a dragon playing with a ball.
Then I tried some paper cutting, that is, making images out of paper. It was difficult, 60 a lot of fun! With help from the artist, I managed to make one in the shape of a fish. Meanwhile, 61 woman at the next stand was using a needle and some thread to do some embroidery (刺绣), 62 looked so pretty! Then I went into a section 63 (decorate) like a traditional Chinese study, 64 two beautiful Chinese paintings of a pine tree and some bamboo hung on the walls.
There was also an old man writing Chinese calligraphy: his writing was so free and elegant! Another man 65 (sit) next to him showed me how seal cutting works. Chinese characters are carved into small squares of stone and stamped onto paper with ink.
What an unforgettable experience and it will always stick in my memory!

九、读后续写
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I grew up in Iowa on a farm by a major highway. During serious snowstorms, people often got stuck along that road. Weather prediction in the 1950s wasn’t too accurate, so we had no warning to store food before storms. Otherwise, we could keep enough food in the house to feed many people for days—including those stranded(使……滞留).
Our large house was home to my parents and 2 children—my brother Bob, six years older than me and I. We always had room for overnight storm “guests”, but rarely knew any of them. When I was 14, a heavy snowstorm stranded seven people at our house. By 8:00 p.m. my family and unexpected guests were settled in eating popcorn and watching TV.
Through the strong wind and TV, I thought I heard a loud noise outside. I heard it again. When I opened the door, I screamed. Someone was lying there, completely covered with snow, speaking unclearly and quietly about something we could not understand. Eventually, she was able to tell us that her wheelchair-bound husband was a half mile down the road with their truck stuck in the snow.
We listened in disbelief as she described crawling(爬行) along the road to our house because she knew they would freeze to death if they stayed in the truck. Through bright snow, on hands and knees, she felt her way along the highway edge to stay in a straight line.
My parents immediately called the highway police to come and locate her husband. They refused, saying they lacked equipment, and that it was unwise to risk any more lives. The woman cried and begged my family to rescue her husband in case he was frozen to death. Eventually, my father and brother determined to feel their way to a tractor(拖拉机) with chains on the wheels. They also carried a blanket and ropes.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Outside in the bright snow, they could only see a few feet.

【原文】W: Stephen King is a contemporary American author. His books have sold more than 350 million copies worldwide and have been translated into many languages. Many of his stories are set in his home state of Maine. When he was a young boy, King witnessed one of his friends being struck and killed by a train. Some people have suggested that this is why he frequently writes about death. But when he wrote an autobiography about becoming a writer, he did not mention this incident. In 1970, he graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in English. He occasionally sold short stories, but it wasn’t until 1974 that he published his first novel Carrie. Surprisingly, he had given up on this story in its early stages and thrown it away. Luckily, his wife found it in the trash can and told him to keep working on it. He made enough money from the publication of that book to be able to write full-time.

25.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“The boys were cut from the same cloth. Every one of them enjoyed hard work.(这些男孩有许多共同点。他们每个人都喜欢努力工作。)”可知,作者的父亲几个兄弟都喜欢努力工作,这是一种品格,由此可推测出,他们有相似的品格。故选D。

It also releases the feelgood hormones, which help you combat stress and pain.(任何形式的艺术,无论是创作还是观察,都能减少压力荷尔蒙。它还释放出感觉良好的荷尔蒙,帮助你对抗压力和疼痛。)”对此问题进行了解释。由此可知,本段主要讲述的是艺术提升健康和幸福感的原因。故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段中Debs的话“Social prescribing addressed my wellness rather than my illness. The focus was on what I could do well, not what all the problems were. It allowed me time to heal myself. It totally transformed my life.(社会处方处理的是我的健康,而不是我的疾病。重点是我能做得好的事情,而不是所有的问题是什么。它让我有时间治愈自己。它彻底改变了我的生活)”可知,Debs认为社会处方从她的健康入手,让她有时间治愈自己,彻底改变了她的生活。由此可推测出,她对社会处方非常感激。故选A。

66.Dear Ryan,
I’m Li Hua from Class 3. I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t perform well in the football match. It’s understandable to be depressed about the result. However, if you can adopt different perspectives, the loss may be a blessing.
First, it’s normal to lose in a football match. If you’ve tried your best, why not lift your spirits to face the result? Anyway, the essence of competition lies not in victory but participation. Besides, you can also benefit from your loss by figuring out your strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, if you endeavor to overcome the disadvantage, you will win sooner or later.
I hope you can find my encouragement helpful. Best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

67.Outside in the bright snow, they can only see a few feet. So it was easy to lose the sense of direction and not to be able to get back to the vehicle. They tied the ropes around their waists and to the tractor and made their way to the truck with difficulty. When seeing the woman’s husband, Dad quickly wrapped the blanket around the poor man, managed to lift him onto the tractor with Bob, and then drove home cautiously.
We were so excited when they returned with the woman’s husband. The woman was in tears when she saw her husband again. They thanked Dad and Bob again and again. We were so proud that they had the courage to do what they had done, for it was really a dangerous adventure. For years, a large fruit or flower basket appeared at our house from this grateful couple. Dad and the brother taught me the meaning of “hero” that cold night. They’d probably be surprised to know what they did for a total stranger still means to me.
