A 18. A 19. B 20. B
M: Today I’m going to talk about gesture, and how we use our hands when we talk. Most of what I’m going to say is based on research done by Professor Susan Meadow. She’s written about her work in a book called Hearing Gesture: How Our Hands Help Us Think. It’s on your book list. Professor Meadow has spent a long time studying gestures. We usually don’t even notice how we’re using our hands when we talk. But try talking without hands! Our hands and our eyes and even how we move our bodies all help us to communicate.
OK. The first point I’d like to make is that everybody gestures, including even people who have been blind from birth. So even someone who has never seen a gesture will use their hands when they’re speaking. So scientists have concluded that gesturing is not something that we learn from other people. It’s something that we do naturally, and that we’re all born with.

Earlier last month, when a young woman and a male friend were meeting up at a coffee shop in Tianjin, another man tried to chat her up and asked her for her WeChat ID.
The woman politely turned down the man’s request but a few days later she got to know that a video of her at the coffee shop had been posted on a short video-sharing platform. The woman was furious as the man who had tried to chat her up had not told her he was making a video nor taken her permission before uploading the video. She left a comment under the video, asking for its removal, and even reported the matter to the platform’s handlers. The account that posted the video was soon disabled.
However, this case is far from alone. Websites dealing in short-videos are filled with accounts that post such videos showing “how to chat up women”. Their purpose is to post such videos for money.
Taking a video of someone without their permission and uploading it violates(侵害) someone’s right to privacy, but such videos are being made and uploaded online with increasing frequency. It was only because the woman in this instance complained that the video of her was removed. What if her attention had not been drawn to the video? One just has to browse these sites to find many such videos.
Obviously, there are loopholes in the supervision(监管漏洞)of some short-video platforms, as they are uploading contents that violate other people’s right to privacy.
Women need to watch out if a stranger tries to chat them up. If they suspect the person interacting with them might have a hidden camera somewhere, they should consider calling the police to better protect their right to privacy.
24. What is the writer’s intention for writing the first two paragraphs?
A. Warning women of the possible harm.
B. Introducing the topic of violating privacy.
C. Stressing the seriousness of the phenomenon.
D. Commenting on the man’s unacceptable behavior.
25. What is the man’s most probable reason to upload the video?
A. To impress viewers. B. To earn money.
C. To contact the woman. D. To share the platform.
26. What is the main idea of the paragraph 4?
A. There are more and more privacy-violating videos on line.
B. It is wrong to take videos of people without their knowing.
C. It is of importance that we protect our right by complaining.
D. A number of people go to websites with improper materials.
27. What is the author’s attitude to the management of some short-video platforms?
A. Positive. B. Satisfied. C. Negative. D. Doubtful.
B 25. B 26. A 27. C
由第一段“Earlier last month, when a young woman and a male friend were meeting up at a coffee shop in Tianjin, another man tried to chat her up and asked her for her WeChat ID.”(上个月早些时候,一名年轻女子和一名男性朋友在天津一家咖啡店见面时,另一名男子试图与她搭讪,并向她索要微信号码。)和第二段中的“The woman politely turned down the man’s request but a few days later she got to know that a video of her at the coffee shop had been posted on a short video-sharing platform. The woman was furious as the man who had tried to chat her up had not told her he was making a video nor taken her permission before uploading the video.”(这位女士礼貌地拒绝了这名男子的要求,但几天后她才知道,一段她在咖啡店的视频被上传到了一个短视频分享平台上。
由第三段中的“Their purpose is to post such videos for money.”(他们的目的是为了赚钱而发布这样的视频),可知他上传视频最可能的原因是为了挣钱。
由第四段中的“Taking a video of someone without their permission and uploading it violates(侵害) someone’s right to privacy, but such videos are being made and uploaded online with increasing frequency.”(未经允许拍摄某人的视频并将其上传侵犯了某人的隐私权,但此类视频在网上制作和上传的频率越来越高)和“One just has to browse these sites to find many such videos.”(你只要浏览这些网站就可以找到很多这样的视频),可知第四段主要讲网上侵犯隐私的视频越来越多,而且很容易找到此类视频。故选A项。
由第五段“Obviously, there are loopholes in the supervision(监管漏洞)of some short-video platforms, as they are uploading contents that violate other people’s right to privacy.”(显然,一些短视频平台存在监管漏洞,因为它们上传侵犯他人隐私权的内容),可知作者认为短视频平台存在监管漏洞,可得出作者对短视频平台管理的态度是否定的。故选C项。

Do you still remember the scene in the famous movie Titanic, directed by Cameron, where Jack was frozen to death in the icy cold water so that Rose could survive on the floating door alone? It broke many people’s hearts. Two decades later, people are still asking the question, “wasn’t there enough room on the door for both of them?” Cameron once responded by saying it wasn’t a question of room, but buoyancy(浮力)— if both of them had tried to stay on the door, he argued, the whole thing would sink.
But several guys from “Mythbusters”, an Australian-American science entertainment television program, decided to put the theory to the test themselves. They discovered that if Rose had took off her life jacket to the bottom of the door, there would have been enough buoyancy to keep both of them afloat.
“It was an artistic choice, the thing was just big enough to hold her, and not big enough to hold him,” Cameron said. “I think it’s all kind of silly, really, that we’re having this discussion 20 years later. But it does show that the film was effective in making Jack so attractive to the audience that it hurts them to see him die. The film is about death and separation; he had to die.”
Since Jack was doomed to die, Cameron said, it could have happened in a variety of different ways. It’s not about the door not being big enough: that’s just a practical method for his death. “Whether it was that, or whether a chimney(烟囱)fell on him, he was going down,” Cameron said. “It’s called art: things happen for artistic reasons, not for physics reasons.”
28. According to Cameron, why can’t audience accept Jack’s death?
A. They are artistic people. B. They like the movie.
C. They love Jack. D. They are eager for truth.
29. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Jack died by accident. B. Jack’s death was unavoidable.
C. The chimney fell on Jack. D. The door could make a difference.
30. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Jack Had to Die B. A Door of Life and Death
C. Audience Knew Better D. Science Behind Movie
31. Where can you probably find this article?
A. A popular magazine. B. A movie poster.
C. A government report. D. A notice board.
C 29. B 30. A 31. A
由倒数第二段中的“But it does show that the film was effective in making Jack so attractive to the audience that it hurts them to see him die.”(但这确实表明,这部电影有效地让Jack对观众如此有吸引力,以至于看到他死去,观众都会很伤心),可知根据Cameron的说法,Jack对观众很有吸引力,以至于看到他死去,观众都会很伤心,说明观众爱Jack,所以不能接受Jack的死。
由最后一段中的“Since Jack was doomed to die, Cameron said, it could have happened in a variety of different ways. It’s not about the door not being big enough: that’s just a practical method for his death. “Whether it was that, or whether a chimney(烟囱)fell on him, he was going down,” Cameron said.”(Cameron说,既然Jack命中注定要死,那就可能以各种不同的方式发生。
故选A项。
故选A项。

The Broomstick (扫帚) Challenge, which appeared on social media on Monday, is based on incorrect science, according to NASA.
The challenge originated from a viral twitter, which claimed that NASA said Monday is the only day a broomstick could stand on its own because of the earth’s gravity (引力).The twitter was accompanied by a video of a woman propping a broom up. As the woman watched the broom stand up on its own, she yelled, “No strings, nothing.”
Though there was no evidence that NASA ever suggested that gravity would be different on Monday, the twitter, which received more than 260,000 likes and was shared more than 60,000 times, gained hundreds of responses from people who wanted to participate in the “novelty”of watching a broom stand up by itself.
Yet NASA astronaut Alvin Drew and scientist Sarah Noble, who responded to the Broomstick Challenge on Twitter, say that the challenge can actually be conducted on any given day. The pair posted their own video of them standing up a broom on Tuesday, to show that even though the window for the challenge had passed, it was still actionable.
“Did you do the Broomstick Challenge yesterday?”Noble asked in the video.“Well, turns out you can do it again today.”
“It’s just physics,” Drew added.
The NASA Earth twitter account also weighed in saying “There’s no special gravity that only affects brooms, but the Moon’s gravity creates tides on Earth.”
The myth, which is partly based on an old wives’ tale that claims that every year on the
Vernal and autumnal equinoxes, eggs are able to balance on their ends, appears to have surfaced annually since at least 2012.
32. What can we infer from the text ?
A. The special gravity only has impact on brooms.
B. A broomstick could stand on its own on Monday.
C. The twitter received more than 260,000 responses.
D. The Broomstick Challenge gained much popularity.
33. What does the underlined word “novelty” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Being surprising but dangerous. B. Being new and interesting.
C. Being challenging and frightening. D. Being clear and obvious.
34. Which of the following may Alvin Drew agree with?
A. Eggs can also stand on their ends.
B. Tides are created by the Moon’s gravity.
C. Physics can help us explain the phenomenon.
D. A broomstick could stand on its own on a specific day.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To appeal to more people to learn physics.
B. To introduce the process of Broomstick Challenge.
C. To persuade people to try broom standing experiment.
D. To explain the broom’s standing up on its own is not magic.
D 33. B 34. C 35. D

通过画线词前的“the twitter, which received more than 260,000 likes and was shared more than 60,000 times.”
通过文章第六段中Drew的补充说明“It’s just physics.”

A. poor贫穷的;B. unique独特的;C. typical典型的;D. ideal理想的。 故选A项。

Thanks for your listening.
Good morning, my dear friends. I’m Li Hua. Welcome to our school. Knowing you’re keen on traditional Chinese culture, I’d like to introduce a traditional Chinese festival to you—the Dragon Boat Festival.
The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, so it’s also called the Double Fifth Festival. On that day, we usually eat Zongzi—sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. As the festival name shows, people hold dragon boat races to celebrate it, especially in the southern places in memory of Qu Yuan, a great poet of ancient China. Therefore, it’s regarded as a day of mourning and cherishing the memory.

Everyone likes the beautiful Cinderella, but I like the ugly stepsister. The sidewalk was filled with shoppers as my mother and I hurried to the department store. I raised my neck for a look at the holiday window display, but at the age of six I was too small to see around the grown-ups with their winter coats and packages. When at last we reached the store, I stood with my eyes widened. “Look, Mother,” I shouted, pressing my hands against the glass, “Cinderella.” Before my eyes was the most beautiful doll I had ever seen! She wore a fairy princess suit made of shining red silk. I knew if I lifted her skirt I would find her crystal(水晶) shoes. The tiny tiara (冠状头饰) fastened to her silky golden hair shone.
“If only she were mine,” I dreamed. “We’d have tea parties, share secrets and dance with a handsome prince.” But to my disappointment, my mother guided me away from the window, explaining that she and my father could not afford such an expensive doll. “But there will be a very special gift under the tree for you on Christmas morning, Madge,” she said. “I promise.” Later that week I leaned against Mother’s sewing machine, watching the needle flash up and down. “Bet you don’t know what this is!” she joked, holding up the cloth for me to see. “My Christmas doll!” I yelled. It was still in the early stages but I could make out the head, neck and body. “So much to my surprise!” Mother laughed as I danced around the room, already pretending Cinderella and I were at the ball. It wouldn’t be long now.
My excitement grew with each passing day. Mother continued to work on the doll, and whenever I walked into the room she would hide it under a pillow. I could tell by her smile she was pleased with her progress. On Christmas morning I jumped out of bed, ran down the hall and quickly arrived at the living room where the Christmas tree was placed.
注意:1.续写的词数应为150左右;
There, underneath the tree, was a beautifully packed gift box.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But I could see Mother watching me, waiting for my response.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
There, underneath the tree, was a beautifully packed gift box. Inside it was the “doll” I expected. With butterflies in my stomach, I breathed deeply and then opened it expectantly. However, much to my disappointment, it was nothing like the one that we saw at the store. She wore a plain skirt with a simple face. Her black woolen hair was pulled back in a pony tail, with no shiny tiara at all, not to mention the crystal shoes. She was nothing like Cinderella; she looked more like the ugly stepsister.
But I could see Mother watching me, waiting for my response. I knew Mum would be sad if she knew what I really felt. Hiding my disappointment, I shouted with delight, “She’s hard to resist! Thanks, Mum!” A relieved smiled appeared on my mother’s face. From time to time, I would take the “ugly stepsister” out and admire it. It is a reminder of my mother’s love. Her love would make me special and happy even if things did not always tick all the right boxes.
