A series of massive thunder storms hit our area recently, causing flash flooding and knocking down tree branches and even trees. I had spent the afternoon picking up branches out of my yard and throwing them away. Then just before I was getting ready to take my dogs for their last walk of the day, the warnings came on my television and over my phone that another of these storms was heading our way.
I quickly took my dogs outside. Huge clouds were rolling in while thunder boomed over the hills. I knew that the stars were shining but I certainly couldn’t see them. The darkness seemed darker and scarier than usual because I knew what was on the way. That was when I saw it. The tiniest blink of light, up high, at the far end of the grassland behind my house. I smiled. The first of the fireflies had appeared for the summer at just the time I needed to see his light. Soon a few others were blinking their lights as well. It amazed me how far their light traveled in the darkness of the night and how they didn’t seem bothered at all by the approaching storm. I spent an extra few minutes watching my lightening bug friends and taking in their message of light before heading in to get ready for the storm. As I did, though, I noticed that the darkness no longer seemed so scary and that my fear had been replaced with joy.
Life does have its share of storms, some caused by nature and some caused by us. We can’t go through life being scared of them, however. Take a lesson from the fireflies then. Let your light shine. It may seem tiny but you will be amazed at how far it can be seen and how easily it can drive the dark away.
4.What happened when the author was about to walk the dog?
A. His house was heavily damaged.
B. He was encouraged to pick up the branches.
C. He was broadcasting a bad weather warning.
D. Another big storm was broadcasted to be on its way.
5.Which of the following can best describe the huge clouds?
A. Normal. B. Frightening. C. Pale. D. High.
6.Why did the author smile when he saw the tiniest blink of light?
A. There would be no storm at all. B. He could then walk his dog easier.
C. He found great hope from the dark. D. He wasn’t afraid of being lost then.
7.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. We should always give off light when in trouble.
B. Small light in life won’t help much in our life.
C. Some great troubles won’t be easily dealt with.
D. We should avoid being disturbed by trouble.
C
There are few places on Earth that humans haven't messed up. Now even Antarctica, the only continent with no permanent human inhabitants, is being changed by us. A study found that the increasing human presence in Antarctica is causing more snow melt-bad news, for a frozen world already battling the effects of human-Caused global warming.
Black carbon, the dark, dusty pollution that comes from burning fossil, fuels has settled in locations where tourists and researchers spend a lot of time, scientists found. Even the smallest amount of the dark pollutant. can have a significant impact on melting because of its very low reflectiveness: things that are light in color, like snow, reflect the sun's energy and stay cool; things that are dark, like black carbon, absorb the sun’s energy and warm up.
“The snow albedo (反射率)effect is one of the largest uncertainties in regional and global climate modeling right now,” Alia Khan, a snow and ice scientist at Western Washington University, told CNN. "That's one of the motivations for the study, to quantify the impact of black carbon on regional snowmelt, which is important for quantifying the role of black carbon in the global loss of snow and ice.”
“Antarctica is sitting there pretty much silently all year. But, if it weren't there, in the state that it is meant to be, the balance that we have in the climate system will no longer be J Marilyn Raphael, a geography professor said. "Antarctica's sea ice is also important to maintain a balance in atmospheric circulation, he added. As waters get warmer, some Antarctic creatures are finding their homes more and more unlivable.
“Everything we do has consequences, ” Raphael said. “We need to educate ourselves about those consequences, especially in systems that we know relatively little about. We have to be careful that we don’t upset the climate balance.”
8.Why can the smallest amount of black carbon have huge impact on melting?
A. It is highly reflective. B. Its dark colour absorbs heat.
C. It produces vast energy. D. It causes much pollution.
9.According to Alia, which of the following is one reason for conducting the study?
A. To measure the impact of black carbon on melting.
B. To quantify the cost of battling against climate change.
C. To remove the uncertainties of global warming effects.
D. To urge people to pay more attention to melting problem.
10.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. The change caused by Antarctic melting.
B. The methods to stop Antarctic ice melting.
C. The significance of Antarctic being in its state.
D. The sufferings Antarctic creatures are experiencing.
11. What does Raphael advise people to do?
A. Reduce tourist numbers. B. Face the consequences.
C. Acquire professional education. D. Stop disturbing the climate.
D
Every language and culture has curse words(脏话). What gives a curse word its power is partly its meaning and partly its sound. “In English, for example, curse words tend to contain a high percentage of plosive sounds—including P, T and K, ”said Ryan McKay, a psychologist at University of London.
Dr. McKay teamed up with his colleague Shiri Lev-Ari to learn whether this familiar pattern went beyond English. They wondered whether it might even represent what's called sound symbolism. Sound symbolism is when a word sounds like what it means.
The researchers first asked fluent speakers of Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Korean and Russian to list the most vulgar(粗俗的) words they could think of. Once they'd made a list of each language's most frequently used curse words, the researchers compared these with neutral words from the same language. In these languages, they didn't find the plosive sounds that seem common in English curse words. “Instead, we found that the vulgar words were defined by what they lacked: the approximant sounds that include letters I, L, R, W and Y, ”Dr. Lev-Ari said.
Next, the scientists invited 215 native speakers of six languages: Arabic, Chinese, Finnish, French, German and Spanish. The participants listened to pairs of words in a language they didn't speak, and guessed which word in each pair was offensive. In reality, all the words were invented. For example, the researchers started with the Albanian word “zog, ” for “bird, ”and created the pair of fake words “yog" and “tsog. ”Participants were more likely to guess that words without approximants, such as “tsog, ” were curses.
Finally, the researchers combed through the dictionary for English curse words and their cleaned-up versions. Once again, the clean versions included more of the sounds I, L, R, W and Y.
A 20th-century linguistic(语言学的)principle claimed that the sounds of words were arbitrary: Any word could have any meaning. With curse words, though, as in other cases of sound symbolism, “the sounds themselves seem to carry meaning, ”said Lev-Ari. “That's a new thing, ”said linguist Benjamin Bergen. “Curse words across languages, unrelated to each other, may pattern similarly. ”He also pointed out, to make sure the pattern of approximants missing from curses isn't an accident, it would be nice to find it in an even larger sample of languages.
12.What is the purpose of McKay and Lev-Ari's research?
A. To analyze a phenomenon. B. To confirm an assumption.
C. To explain a definition. D. To challenge a theory.
13.What were the participants asked to do in the second part of the research?
A. To decide which curse words are used more frequently.
B. To make up new curse words from real words.
C. To guess a word's offensiveness according to its sound.
D. To identify the approximants in curse words.
14.According to Lev-Ari, which of the four is likely to sound offensive?
A. tusck B. sola C. darn D. biach
15.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The old linguistic principle of sounds and meanings is wrong.
B. In sound symbolism, a word's sound represents its meaning.
C. The research reveals the similarities between different languages.
D. The result of the research is not fully accepted by scientists.

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself: Why would anyone bring home all his books on Friday? He must really be nerd.
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tipping him so be landed in the dir. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, he said, “thanks!” There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him.
Over next four years, Kyle and I became the best friends. When we were seniors, be had the highest marks in the class and was chose to give a speech at the graduation ceremony. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a lot, and I was so glad it wasn’t me having to get up there and speak.
Graduation day, I saw Kyle and said. “Hey big guy, you’ll be great!” He looked at me with one of those looks, the really grateful one, and said “Thanks,” smiling.
As be started his speech, he cleared his throat and began. “Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. 37.
由“in the past 20 years”可知,句子时态用现在完成时,主语The festival是单数,因此空格处是has become。故填has become。

第三部分 写作
46.应用文
Dear Robert,
How’s everything going? I’m glad to hear that BBC is introducing Chinese culture in UK.
Du Fu is regarded as the greatest poet in Chinese history. He was quite productive, leaving about 1,500 poems behind, most of which are still popular today. We love him not only because he wrote many great poems, but because he loved us common people. In most of his poems, he described the life of ordinary people and the extreme hardship they were facing as well as criticizing the governors who didn’t care about the common people.
I’m delighted that you have an interest in Chinese Culture. If you would learn Chinese language, then you’ll find more about China.
Wish you all the best.
Yours,
Li Hua

[高分句型2] Not until that moment did I realize what big difference one small gesture had made to him. (运用了部分倒装)
One Possible Version:
Paragraph 1:
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. Kyle had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn’t have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. Meanwhile, I found he looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. “Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.” I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, and popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. When his eyes caught mine, I was able to see tears shimmered in his smiling eyes.
Paragraph 2:
I smiled back in tears. Not until that moment did I realize what big difference one small gesture had made to him. I even saw his Mom and Dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. It dawned on me that never should we underestimate the power of our actions. With one small gesture we can change a person’s life. For better or for worse.
