Produced by the award-winning international team of writers and editors behind The World of Chinese, this book Hainan: Jade Cliffs to Ocean Paradise dives deep into the natural, cultural and humanistic sides of an island lately associated with retirees and real estate. "Most travel guides stop at telling you where and how to visit," said Chu Dandan, chief editor of The World of Chinese, at the book's launch event. "Our book tells you why you should visit." What moves readers are "more than just sea and coconuts," Chu said, "but the people and the stories in between." From Hainan's famous beach resorts to its backcountry interior, the book's writers went across the province in search of little-told tales—trekking(跋涉) up its primeval(原始的) hills and through its rainforests, sipping tea and coffee with locals, visiting the homes of fishermen and ethnic minorities and discovering the passions of marine archaeologists, conservationists and surfers. These personal experiences and first-hand conversations are reflected in each of the book's chapters on Hainan's ecology, history, culture, leisure, food, sports and economy. These topics are then brought to life by original photographs, hand-drawn maps, interviews with native authors and scholars and profiles on colorful individuals and communities. "One of the things I was not expecting to find was a quaint little fishing village. Inevitably, modem elements permeate the beauty of ancient elegance. The village has been quietly half-occupied by a growing modem surfing community," Sam Davies, one of the writers, told the audience about visiting the village of Houhai in Sanya. "I was able to talk to some locals and others about how the village has changed, what it has meant for people's lives, and how surfing is just starting to develop in China," Davies said. "Our aim is to create something that will go far," Gu Qing, general secretary of The Commercial Press, said at the book launch. "I believe Hainan's development will exceed even the predictions in this book, and we hope this book and Hainan will go out into the world together." Their documentary, Women at West Point: Breaking Barriers of the Long Gray Line, tells the story of the first women who graduated from West Point in 1980. In March, Miller and Rowland were announced to have been selected for a Special Recognition of Champions Award as “individuals who have made exceptional contributions to women in the Army” “What we did was never for an award or for recognition; it was about sharing the story of these women, so to receive the award was really special,” Miller said. Miller and Rowland spent countless hours working on their documentary, reaching out to the 62 women of the class of 1980 and interviewing more than 25 percent of them. “This was hours and hours of research and interviews,” Miller said. “We did Face Times with the women, we met in person, we called them, and so we had so much information, so many news articles going back 40 years. “Miller, whose mom was a veteran (老兵) and dad was a teacher at the United States Military Academy, lived in West Point as a child. “I always saw female cadets (学员), and it always seemed like, ‘Oh, boys and girls, that’s completely normal, ‘so it was such a shock to me when I realized that girls didn’t always have that opportunity. “While making this documentary, Miller also realized her love for sharing other people’s stories. “I came to realize how much power there is in getting the story right, “she said, “And we were able to experience the gratitude from these women for sharing their stories and showing them that the younger generation really appreciates the doors they opened for us.4.What’s Kathryn Miller’s purpose of creating the documentary?A.To express her love for the armed forces.B.To win first place in the competition.C.To introduce the first female graduates of West Point.D.To encourage girls to study at West Point.5.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?A.The gains from making the documentary.B.The challenges the creators met.C.The ways of contacting those women.D.The effort behind the documentary.6.What can we infer from the last paragraph?A.Miller’s parents used to teach military affairs.B.Women used to have little access to military education.C.Studying in West Point is challenging for women now.D.Young people nowadays care little about those stories.7.Which of the following best describes Kathryn Miller?A.Passionate. A new trend is taking hold in China-guochao or "China-chic".According to a recently published report, searches related to guochao on Dianping, a lifestyle information platform, have risen by 170 percent from the same period last year, and reviews have risen by nearly 40 percent. China-chic is happening, but what is it?The term characterizes the rise of China's native fashion trends. It has expanded the concept of "Made in China", which has been recognized as the representation of Chinese culture and aesthetics(审美)offered by homegrown Chinese brands, according to CGTN.China-chic came into the spotlight in 2018.Before that, big-name foreign companies dominated the world market. To win market share, many Chinese brands followed in the footsteps of these Western brands. But that year, Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning changed things up. During the 2018 New York Fashion Week, Li-Ning introduced its Taoism-inspired Wu Dao collection. The collection not only had a trendy look, but also included elements of traditional Chinese culture. It immediately grabbed attention at home and abroad. The trend to embrace domestic brands has since spread rapidly to various sectors and products, from food and drinks to clothing, mobile phones and electric vehicles. For example, White Rabbit, whose sweet candy brings back childhood memories for many, launched its perfume and lip balm. "We want White Rabbit to be a brand that young people want to share," Shen Qinfeng, the company's marketing manager, told People's Daily. Now, the guochao trend is "moving to the next stage", where its success will rely, first and foremost on gaining cultural confidence rather than Western validation, according to Kerra Zhou, founder or brand strategy consultancy Kerrisma."No matter how the guochao trend evolves, there's one thing that won't change:Behind the craze is people's positive attitude toward the country's development and their recognition of and growing confidence in national culture," said Yao Linqing, a professor in the School of Economics and Management at Communication University of China.8.What makes Li-Ning so fashionable?A.Its successful market strategy similar to Western brands.B.Its trendy look similar to Western brands.C.Its elements of traditional Chinese culture.D.Chic and unique clothes styles.9.Why did the author mention "White Rabbit" in paragraph 5?A.Because White Rabbit reminded the author of his or her childhood.B.Because the author helped White Rabbit promote new products.C.Because White Rabbit was a good example for showing the guochao trend.D.Because this traditional brand was on the decline.10.What does the secret to the success of the guochao?A.Increasing confidence in Chinese culture.B.Excellent design skills.C.Clothes of great quality.D.Styles catering to people abroad.11.What is the author’s attitude to the future of the guochao trend?A.Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Disapproving. D. Cautious.DThe first model of Apple’s iPhone was launched in June 2007. Since then, many different smartphones have been introduced. The devices now influence our daily lives in many ways. One thing that has changed is that many people now use their phones to easily take pictures without the need for a camera. Not surprisingly, this change has caused major business problems for camera manufacturers. Of course, the camera built into the first iPhone 15 years ago did not include a high-quality camera able to compete with separate camera models. But over the years, smartphone makers have invested heavily in research and development to change that. Today, many smartphones have high-quality cameras designed to produce better pictures. And most phone devices also offer powerful tools to improve the quality of the pictures we take. Japan’s Camera & Tmaging Products Association (CIPA) said the digital camera market continually expanded starting in 1999. It experienced its first decrease in 2009—and continued to fall thereafter. The biggest change appeared from 2010 to 2020, when worldwide camera shipments fell about 93 percent, CIPA reported. The decreases were mainly caused by drops in shipments of digital cameras that have built-in lenses. However, camera makers have had more success selling digital cameras with interchangeable lenses. This is because these cameras are generally targeted at professional photographers who demand higher quality. Such cameras can produce “high image quality that distinguishes them from smartphones,” CIPA said. But this does not mean that professional photographers never use smartphones to capture pictures. Brynn Anderson is based with the AP in Atlanta, Georgia. She said: “Sometimes being a photographer with a larger camera can be intimidating to the person being photographed. Using a phone makes it easier for me to get comfortable moments that might not happen otherwise.” Rodrigo Abd, an AP photographer in Buenos Aires, Argentina says using the iPhone makes it easier for him “to always be attentive” to everyday events when not covering a news story. Oded Balilty is based in Tel Aviv, Israel. “It is definitely an alternative tool,” he said of the iPhone. But he added: “It’s the photographer not the device, that determines the quality of a photo.”12.What is the potential cause of the first decrease of digital cameras in 2009?A.Less money was invested to improve digital cameras.B.Cameras had been built into smartphones and improved.C.Fewer digital cameras with built-in lenses were producedD.The digital camera market stopped promoting new products.13.Why do digital cameras with interchangeable lenses enjoy good sales.A.They are more affordable.B.They have superb shooting quality.C.They offer the power to beautify photos. D.They are specially designed for professionals.14.What does the underlined word “intimidating ” in the last paragraph probably pean?A.Amusing. B.Demanding. C.Rewarding. The discovery shows that life in seafloor sediments can survive higher temperatures than previously thought. "I would think that wherever there's energy that can be exploited by microorganisms, 21 find(s) a way." says Tina Treude at the University of California, Los Angeles. It is possible that there is life at even higher temperatures. "The only way to find out is to go back and 22 deeper," she says, though in lab experiments so far, no microbes have been found to grow above 122°C. The researchers were also able to 23 out and count cells using a special device. Together, the findings show that relatively few cells survive at these temperatures, but those that do have very high metabolic(新陈代谢的) rates. "It was astonishingly high," says Treude. This surprised the team because it is the 24 of what has been found in shallower sediments, where it is much colder. Microbes are 25 there, but their metabolisms are extremely slow and individual microbes might live for millions of years. At 120°C,the heat is doing a lot of damage to cells, so microbes may need high metabolisms to generate enough energy to repair this damage. It is a(n) 26 to stay alive, says Treude. It isn't clear what these heat-loving, or thermophilic, microbes are, as the team was unable to 27 their DNA. Nor is it clear how they came to be in the sediments, given that this would have been a very cold environment for a long time after the sediments that the samples came from were first 28 . However, a few thermophilic microbes would have been present when the sediments were deposited, and they may have somehow 29 until temperatures began to rise due to being 30 under more material, says team member Felix Beulig at Aarhus University in Denmark. As the temperatures rose, all the microbes that weren't 31 of heat would gradually have died off, says team member Florian Schubert at the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam. "The microbes that cannot 32 , they just die," he says. Patrick Forterre at the Pasteur Institute in Paris says that while there are 33 results showing microbe growth at 106°C,nobody has been able to exactly copy the two lab studies claiming growth at 122°C. "It's very difficult to 34 the upper temperature limit," he says. He is therefore 35 of the idea of microbes living normally at 120°C,but he does think it is possible that they could somehow survive and became active again at lower temperatures.21.A. life B. energy C. bacteria D. voyage22.A. think B. research C. practise D. drill23.A. spread B. figure C. separate D. reach24.A. opposite B. evidence C. coincidence D. resemblance25.A. moderate B. existent C. swift D. plentiful26.A. game B. approach C. race D. solution27.A. explode B. identify C. locate D. attack28.A. formed B. deposited C. tagged D. covered29.A. stuck on B. moved away C. died off D. run out30.A. exposed B. removed C. buried D. washed31.A. tolerant B. afraid C. tired D. careful32.A. translate B. adapt C. escape D. furnish33.A. various B. false C. reliable D. different34.A. pass B. break C. outstep D. determine35.A. capable B. doubtful C. sick D. ignorant第二节(共10小题;每小题1. 5分, 满分15分)阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或所给单词的正确形式。The search volume for plane 36____(ticket) on travel platform Ctrip 37______(immediate) surged by 160 percent following the release of the adjusted COVID-19 measures 38_____(release) by the authorities on Wednesday.39____ particular, searches for flight tickets from the 25th day of the last lunar month to Chinese New Year's Eve soared to the 40______(high) level in three years.According to 41____ new measures released by the State Council's Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism, COVID testing and health code requirements no longer apply to domestic travelers. The new measures state 42____ testing and health codes will only 43_____(need) for special locations such as nursing homes, welfare homes, medical institutions, and primary and secondary schools. Before the release of the 10 measures, some provinces and cities in China had already been taking steps 44 ______(relax) restrictions. Now, that teacher is working to get that student a car that will get him started in his adult life.On Thursday, Bessemer City High School held its annual graduation ceremony. Dom Moore was one of the teachers involved in coordinating the event. After the ceremony ended, Dom was cleaning up. Nearly everybody had left to celebrate with friends and family, but one young man was still sitting there by himself. “I knew his moods and I knew he wasn't himself,” Dom said. Not knowing what to say at first, the teacher told him, "I expect big things from you and it's going to be OK.”Dom assumed that someone would show up eventually to give the graduate a ride home. But nobody did. When Dom offered to drive him, the two had no idea that this was to be more than just a ride home. The teacher decided to take him out to eat-at any restaurant of his choice. They ended up at the Cheesecake Factory, and enjoyed a hearty meal and dessert to celebrate the graduate's achievement. At first, the two were fighting back tears. But before long, they were having a great time together. Dom never asked why the boy's family did not attend the ceremony. What was important to him was that the young man felt appreciated for what he had accomplished. Later that evening, Dom took to Facebook to share a photo and some thoughts on the event. He says that he doesn't normally post about these situations, as they are all too common in his profession, but that something inside urged him to share this experience.注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。Actually, Dom wanted to help the young man.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Dom thinks what these people did set an example to us.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
