The following list of books centers on joyful African-American children. Each title can provide a unique reading experience for your family's storytime.
A Girl Like Me, written by Angela Johnson, illustrated(插图) by Nina Crews
Not many children's books feature contemporary photographs of ordinary children doing ordinary things. This book shows a diverse group of girls dreaming, laughing, playing, and being themselves.
Jayden's Impossible Garden, written by Melina Mangal, illustrated by Ken Daley
In this colorful tale about two nature enthusiasts, children will get inspired to create their own city gardens. Young Jayden and his older neighbor Curtis, who is in a wheelchair, come together in their deep love of observing nature. Their enthusiasm is the motivation for their special project of creating a magical garden that brings joy and wonder to skeptical family members and neighbors.
Saturday, written and illustrated by Oge Mora
In this mother-daughter story, Saturday plans go wrong one after the other and almost ruin Ava and her mother's special day together. Yet Ava and her mother are able to remain peaceful and joyful on their precious Saturday.
The Thing About Bees: A Love Letter, written and illustrated by Shabazz Larkin
This is a joyful book that describes bees and their benefits. Yet it is much more than ordinary non-fiction because the bee facts described through rhyming text become fathers' favorite shared with their sons. Energetic illustrations strengthen this father-son story that is heart-warming, humorous, educational and inspiring.
1.What do we know about Jayden?
A.He's doubtful about everything. B.He likes reading fairy tales.
C.He creates a garden for Curtis. D.He's full of curiosity about nature.
2.Which book is most probably favored by fathers?
A.The Thing About Bees: A Love Letter. B.Saturday.
C.Jayden's Impossible Garden. D.A Girl Like Me.
3.What do the four books have in common?
A.They are set in the countryside. B.They are picture-books for children.
C.They are written by African authors. D.They are about family relationships.
    B
I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree.
It’s a unique tree. In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls(头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that reside next door to them. Umbrellas in the yard are a must while dining in early August, and as for me, I wear my bike helmet while working in the garden.
The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several common plants. There have been many new plant varieties that I brought home with hopes that maybe the black walnut would accept them, but they failed to flourish.
What does work are native plants that naturally grow in the area. Native plants are important to have around since they provide beneficial pollinators (传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies with seeds and contribute to a healthy and biodiverse environment. Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress.
Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard? Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. It’s also protected under the law. Rightfully so. Trees are important to the urban forest and for all of those that inhabit it.
Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before dawn. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I look up into its leaves.
Every spring, I wonder what the season holds: What are the chances of being knocked unconscious while barbecuing? Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut offers a habitat for wildlife and a reminder.
4.Why does the author wear a bike helmet while working in the garden?
    A.To protect the injured skull.
B.To avoid being hit by the nuts.
    C.To prevent herself from sunburn.
D.To protect herself from getting caught in the rain.
5.What is the tree’s survival strategy?
    A.It accepts new plant varieties.
    B.It attracts beneficial pollinators.
C.It lets out a poison to drive away pests.
D.It produces a chemical harmful to some plants.
6.What can we learn from the passage?
    A.The fruits may bring convenience.
B.The writer finds it attractive to get rid of the tree.
C.The writer is accustomed to living without the tree.
D.The tree is home to numerous birds and other creatures.
7.The author most probably got a reminder from the tree that.
A.It’s better to be sure than sorry.
    B.Constant dropping wears the stone.
C.Trees and plants have their own ways to flourish.
D.Acceptance instead of resistance is the better way to be.
    C
Trees don’t look at the calendar to see when spring arrives, but they seem to know when spring is here better than we do. Recently a research takes a look at why trees in cities are turning green earlier than expected. The annual shift from winter to spring is a breathtaking event to watch as leaves become green and a lush (苍翠的) environment reveals itself.
While it may be winter, trees in cities are turning green earlier than expected and one of the reasons is artificial light. City lights brightening the night skies, billboard signs lit up on roadways, and car headlights all contribute to shifting the regular day to night cycle that plants and trees rely on.
In order to stay alive during cruel winters, trees hit the pause button on their growth. Since temperatures can vary dramatically throughout the winter the length of daylight is the signal trees look for to safely start growing again and turn green.
On average cities are typically 1.8° to 5.4℉ warmer than rural areas. This is known as the urban heat island effect. The changes in city environments may affect seasonal changes even more than climate warming and can affect the allergy (过敏) and mosquito season, water cycles, and also affect pollinators (授粉媒介).
Scientists use satellite imagery to see when plants turn green. By comparing spring green-ups in the 85 largest US cities scientists found that on average trees start to turn green nine days earlier in cities due to the combined effect of urban heat effect and artificial lights.
Despite the worries and concern, it isn’t all bad news.
“With a longer growing season, trees would be able to absorb more carbon dioxide,” A researcher said. “Hopefully they’d have a longer period to do the cooling effect that can help mitigate the urban heating effect in cities.”
8.Which might be a factor causing trees to turn green earlier according to the text?
    A. Timely rain. B. Devoted care. C. Street lamps. D. Noise pollution.
9.What can we say about the research findings?
    A. Cities are generally 5.4℉ colder than rural areas.
    B. The length of daylight influences when trees start growing.
    C. Changeable water cycles may cause urban heat island effect.
    D. Urban heat causes trees to green up 9 days earlier on average.
10.What does the underlined word “mitigate” in the last paragraph mean?
    A. Relieve. B. Enhance. C. Establish. D. Release.
11.In which section of a website can the text be found?
    A. Business. B. Education. C. Life kit. D. Environment.
    D
Doctors sometimes prescribe light therapy to treat a form of depression in people who get too little morning sun. But too much light at other times may actually cause such mood disorders. Long-lasting exposure to light at night brings depression, a new study finds, at least in animals. The new data confirm observations from studies of people who work night shifts, says Richard Stevens of the University of Connecticut Health Center. Mood disorders join a growing list of problems, including cancer, obesity and diabetes - that can occur when light throws life out of balance by disturbing the biological clock and its timing of daily rhythms.
In the new study, Tracy Bedrosian and Randy Nelson of Ohio State University exposed mice to normal light and dark cycles for four weeks. For the next four weeks, half of the mice remained on this schedule, and the rest received continuous dim light throughout their night. Compared with mice exposed to normal nighttime darkness, those getting dim light at night lost their strong preference for sweet drinks, “A sign they no longer get pleasure out of activities they once enjoyed.” Bedrosian says.
In a second test, mice were clocked on how long they actively tried to escape a pool of water. Those exposed to night lights stopped struggling and just floated in the water, a sign of "behavioral despair”, 10 times as long as the mice that had experienced normal nighttime darkness. All symptoms of depression disappeared within two weeks of the mice returning to a normal light- dark cycle, the researchers report. The scientists also could quash the behavioral symptoms by injecting the brains of animals with a drug that prohibits the activity of certain molecules linked with human depression. This finding further suggests that light at night may cause something related to depression.
Human studies linking nighttime light and mood disorders are important but can't easily detect molecular underpinings (分子基础)as animal studies can, says George Brainard of Thomas Jefferson University. The new work, he says, suggests that the change of the biological clock by light at night can be “an extremely powerful force in regulating biology and behavior."
12.After being exposed to continuous nighttime light, he mice ____ .
    A. changed their preferences B. escaped from the water more eagerly
    C. remained active as before D. showed less interest in their favorites
13.What does the underlined word “quash" in Para. 4 probably mean?
    A. study B. predict C. ease D. cause
14.We can learn from the last paragraph that _____.
    A. light at night may have practical effects on people
    B. the biological clock is beneficial to humans
    C. human mood disorders cannot be healed easily
    D. human studies are more important than animal studies
15.What is the main idea of the passage?
    A. Nighttime light may foster depression.
    B. A drug has been found to cure mood disorders.
    C. The study on animals can be applied to humans.
    D. Human biological clock can be controlled by light.

Mary waited anxiously for her turn in the empty dressing room. Never had she been so nervous before. This competition was of vital importance to her comeback .“If I can win today,” she said to herself, “I can dance on the national stage next month.” Three months ago, her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After the medical treatment , she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills.
“Hi, Mary,” in rushed her friend Jessica. “How is your arm? Is it going to influence your performance?”
“I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match . ” said Mary with a determined look.
“Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well-matched competitor. Come on!”
After Jessica left, Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin . “If I don’t try harder, I won’t grasp this chance.” She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?” she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.
A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said “Hi, I’m Linda. I am the next one!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. “This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose tonight.” Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream, “Oh, God, I can’t find my music tape!” Linda searched her bag but in vain . “It may be missing on the way.” With these words, she then rushed out.
    Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag.

    A
Jayden's Impossible Garden, written by Melina Mangal, illustrated by Ken Daley部分中的In this colorful tale about two nature enthusiasts, children will get inspired to create their own city gardens. Young Jayden and his older neighbor Curtis, who is in a wheelchair, come together in their deep love of observing nature.(在这个关于两个自然爱好者的丰富多彩的故事中,孩子们将得到灵感,创建自己的城市花园。
    2.答案:A
The Thing About Bees: A Love Letter, written and illustrated by Shabazz Larkin部分中的Yet it is much more than ordinary non-fiction because the bee facts described through rhyming text become fathers' favorite shared with their sons.(然而,它比普通的非小说作品要丰富得多,因为通过押韵的文本描述的蜜蜂的事实成为父亲们与儿子们分享的最爱。)可推出The Thing About Bees最可能是父亲的偏爱。故选A。
根据第二段"falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that reside next door to them. (掉落的果实会和棒球一样坚硬,可能伤到你、孩子、邻居和那些住在隔壁的人的脑袋。)"可知,作者在果园里劳动时,会佩戴一个自行车头盔,是为了保护头部不会被树上掉落的坚硬果实砸伤,故选B项。
    5.答案:D
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段"The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It's poisonous to several common plants. (作为一种竞争策略,黑胡桃也会通过根部释放一种化学物质。它对几种常见的植物来说是有毒性的。)"可知,黑胡桃树的生存策略就是释放一种对其他一些常见植物物种有毒的物质,以独占生存资源。故选D项。
    6.答案:D
解析:细节理解题。根据第四段"Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress.(这个地区的原生植物通常很容易生长,所以它们承受的压力较小。)"
Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard? Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. (我有没有想过摆脱这个小小的后院的大麻烦吗?是的,然而,要摆脱这棵50英尺高、树干只有87英寸的树几乎是不可能的。)"和最后一段"I'm stuck with this tree, so I'll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires.(我就与这棵树相伴,所以我会倾听它的需求,给它所需的空间。)"
其中,D选项“Urban heat causes trees to green up 9 days earlier on average(城市热岛效应导致树木平均变绿的时间提前9天)”与原文第四段“on average trees start to turn green nine days earlier in cities due to the combined effect of urban heat effect and artificial lights(由于城市热岛效应和人造光的共同作用,城市树木平均提前9天开始变绿)”不符。
    10.答案:A
故选A。
从“those getting dim light at night lost their strong preference for sweet drinks, 'A sign they no longer get pleasure out of activities they once enjoyed.' Bedrosian says.”
从后文“that prohibits the activity of certain molecules linked with human depression”可以得知,这种药物禁止了与人类抑郁症相关分子的活动,也就是这种药物可以缓解症状,故选C。
    14.答案:A
从最后一段“the change of the biological clock by light at night can be 'an extremely powerful force in regulating biology and behavior.'”
    15.答案:A
文章围绕着抑郁症和光照时间展开,从开头的“But too much light at other times may actually cause such mood disorders.”
16.前文“It can be very easy to stick with what you know, instead of trying to meet people who are different from you.”(坚持你所知道的,而不是去结识与你不同的人,这很容易。)和选项G中的“trying to understand people from other countries can help you experience more”(试着去了解来自其他国家的人可以帮助你体验更多)构成转折关系。
    17.根据后文“This includes biases(偏见)about your own cultural background.”(这包括对自己文化背景的偏见。)
18.根据前文“Talk to someone from a different cultural background.”(和来自不同文化背景的人交谈。)可知,此处是讲和来自不同文化背景的人交谈,所以选项E(不要直接问他们问题,把他们当成朋友。)
    20. 根据后文“Stereotyping(模式化)people from different cultural backgrounds can impact their quality of life and opportunities.”(对来自不同文化背景的人形成成见会影响他们的生活质量和机会。)

    第一篇有:in a dilemma,kept reminding,in low spirits,To her surprise and relief等高级词汇;…leaving a note saying… With Mary’s kindness and encouragement…
第二篇有:in surprise,Without her music tape, without this real competitor等高级词汇;She hesitated for a second and then hurried out to give the music tape to Linda, who was extremely anxious in the corridor. Nervous as she was, she stepped onto the stage with a big smile.

    One Possible Version 1:
Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag. She went over and then opened the box to find Linda’s tape was just inside. At that time, she was in a dilemma, “This is my chance to defeat her.” But on a second thought, she changed her mind, “If I hide it, I will win the competition but I may lose something.” She placed it on the chair carefully, leaving a note saying “Take it easy, we are the best.” Soon, it’s her turn to come on the stage.
Hearing her name called, Mary walked on the stage with her heart beating faster and faster. She kept reminding herself, “I have been practicing for so long, and I will certainly make it.” But the serious pain in her arm came again when she was performing the most difficult spin. She fell down on the stage. At that moment, Linda came back in low spirits. To her surprise and relief she saw the tape and Mary’s note. With Mary’s kindness and encouragement, Linda finished her performance calmly and skillfully. Finally, Mary lost the game but she believed she had won everything.

    One Possible Version 2:
Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag. She bent over to pick it up. “Linda’s music tape!” She cried out in surprise. “It must have rolled out of her bag, while she got changed here.” At this moment, an idea flashed through her mind, which made her rooted to the spot. “Without her music tape, Linda will surely lose; without this real competitor, I will definitely win.” At the thought of this, Mary shivered slightly. She was in a dilemma, wondering what to do next. “Do I really want to win so much?” She hesitated for a second and then hurried out to give the music tape to Linda ,who was extremely anxious in the corridor. Linda was so grateful to Mary, and finished her dancing successfully.
Hearing her name called, Mary walked on the stage with her heart beating faster and faster. Nervous as she was, she stepped onto the stage with a big smile. She danced skillfully to the music and completed her most difficult spin smoothly. “Good,” she thougt to herself, “my injured arm is awesome today.” As the music ended, thunderous applause filled the stadium. With the final marks announced, Mary knew she achieved her goal and tears began to well up in her eyes . (Possible ending 1)As she headed back to the dressing room, Linda came up to her cheerfully and held her hand tightly, “Congratulations! You’ve done an amazing performance! You win!” Mary smiled happily, “I win.” (Possible ending 2)As she headed back to the dressing room, she thought about the music tape. “No one will know how close I really came to losing,” Mary said softly to herself.
