    UMass Lowell’s OAP Trips
UMass Lowell’s Outdoor Adventure Program offers all kinds of outdoor trips to people. Below is the information about our trips.
    HIKING
Some of the most beautiful mountains are only a few kilometres away from UMass Lowell. No matter what season it is, we explore these great places. We climb mountains to watch the bright fall colors or fresh green of spring. We experience the wonderland (仙境) of winter on our winter day hikes. Whether it is your first time or 50th, these hiking trips are packed full of fun and adventure.
    BIKING
Our biking trips include day road biking trips and overnight biking trips. On day trips, we enjoy local greenways like the Nashua River Rail Trail or the Minuteman Bikeway. On overnight trips, we may travel to places like Cape Cod. We also take breaks to enjoy the beaches, lighthouses, parks and small towns that we pass along the way.
    SURFING
Our surfing trips travel to Hampton Beach, New Hampshire in the fall and Narragansett, Rhode Island in the spring. Beginners spend the first 1―1.5 hours with a surfing instructor starting on land and then getting into the water. The rest of the time is available to catch waves.
    SNOWBOARDING
New England winters are known for the snowfall. Our snowboarding trips take advantage of winter conditions to get members out on the white snow. We spend one weekend at a popular place like Killington, Vermont, which offers different paths. We spend an evening at Crotched Mountain, which offers campfires and live music to enjoy.

I was doing some Christmas shopping in a toy store and decided to look at Barbie dolls for my nieces. A nicely dressed little girl was excitedly looking through the Barbie dolls as well. As she was looking, a little boy came to the Pokemon toys. He was dressed neatly, but his clothes were obviously old. He was with his father as well, and kept picking up the Pokemon video toys. Each time he picked one up and looked at his father, his father shook his head and said, “No.”
The little girl had chosen her Barbie. However, she stopped and was watching them. Rather dejectedly, the boy had to give up the Pokemon toys and choose something else. The little girl put her Barbie back on the shelf, and ran over to the Pokemon toys. She excitedly picked up one and raced towards the checkout. I picked up my purchases and got in line behind them. Then, much to the little girl's delight, the little boy and his father got in line behind me. After the toy was paid for and bagged, the little girl handed it back to the cashier (收银员) and whispered something in her ear. The cashier smiled and put the package under the counter.
I paid for my purchases and was rearranging things when the little boy came up to the cashier. The cashier checked his purchases and said, “Congratulations, you are my hundredth customer today, and you win a prize!” With that, she handed the little boy the Pokemon toys, and he could only stare in surprise. It was exactly what he had wanted!
The little girl and her father had been standing at the doorway during all of this. Then they walked out. As I walked back to my car, I heard the father ask his daughter why she had done that. I'll never forget what she said to him. “Daddy, didn't Grandparents want me to buy something that would make me happy?” He said, “Of course they did, honey.” To which the little girl replied, “Well, I just did!”
I feel very shocked to have witnessed the true spirit of Christmas in that toy store, in the form of a little girl who understands more about the meaning of this festival than most adults I know.
4.The underlined word “dejectedly” in the second paragraph probably means __________.
    A.disappointedly B.delightedly C.excitedly D.unexpectedly
5.How did the little boy get the Pokemon toys?
A.His father bought him the Poknemon toys.
B.Fortunately, he was the hundredth customer and won the Poknemon toys.
C.The little girl bought the Poknemon toys for him.
D.The cashier felt sympathy for the little boy and gave him the Poknemon toys.
6.What did the little girl mean when saying “Daddy, didn't Grandparents want me to buy something that would make me happy?”
A.Her Grandparents wanted her to be happy.
B.The Poknemon toys made her happy.
C.Making the little boy happy made her happy.
D.Her Grandparents hoped that she could help others.
7.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
    A.the story happened before Christmas.
B.The little boy had not enough money to buy the Poknemon toys.
C.The author was deeply moved by the behavior of the little girl.
D.Although the little girl liked the Poknemon toys very much, she gave them to the boy.

A walk in the park may be just what the doctor ordered. A new program launched last month in Canada gives some doctors the option of providing patients with a free annual pass to the country’s national parks as part of an effort to increase access to nature and the health benefits.
PaRx, a health initiative (倡议) launched by the BC Parks Foundation in 2019, partnered with Parks Canada to provide doctors across four provinces with an initial run of 100 passes that can be prescribed (开处方). The program allows doctors to write more general prescriptions for time spent out in nature; two hours a week, at least 20 minutes at a time, is what PaRx director Dr. Melissa Lem suggests.
“Given the growing body of evidence that indicates nature time can improve all kinds of different physical and mental health conditions, we’re hoping that our PaRx program not only improves patient health, but reduces costs to the health-care system, and helps to grow the number of people who are more engaged environmental advocates, said Prama Rahman, a coordinator for the BC Parks Foundation.
Doctors have been catching on, instructing their patients to turn to nature to improve their health and they're getting creative in how they do it. Dr. Robert Zarr, a doctor based in Washington, began prescribing accessible outdoor activities for his young patients and even created a searchable online database of local parks to make it easier.
But getting outside isn't always as easy as it might sound. Income can affect one's access to nature, an issue that PaRx is trying to address in Canada. Doctors utilizing the new national parks pass program are urged to prioritize patients who might not otherwise be able to afford these passes.
While only 100 adult passes, which give holders access to more than 80 national parks, historic sites and nature reserves, have initially been made available, organizers plan to routinely reassess this number as the program grows, the BC Parks Foundation told NPR.
8.What is PaRx intended to do?
    A. Qualify doctors to prescribe. B. Give patients free access to parks.
    C. Promote free admission to parks. D. Advocate 20 minutes’ walk a day.
9.What does the underlined word “utilizing“ in paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A. Financing. B. Setting up. C. Evaluating. D. Carrying out.
10.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. The BC Parks Foundation is expanding rapidly.
    B. The program has signed up 80 national parks.
    C. More people will benefit from the program.
    D. Those living Close to parks can gain priority.
11.Which is the best title of the text?
    A. PaRx, a Nature Prescription Program. B. BC Parks Foundation in Canada
    C. Year-long Passes to National Parks D. A New Study on Benefits of Walk
    D
Emerging (新兴的) economies struggled to grow through the 2010s and pessimism hangs over them now. People wonder how they will pay debts rung up during the Covid-19 pandemic and how they can grow rapidly as they did in the past.
The freshest answer is the fast-spreading digital revolution (革命). Emerging nations are adopting cutting-edge technology at a lower and lower cost, allowing them to fuel domestic demand and overcome traditional barriers to growth. Over the past decade, the number of smartphone owners has skyrocketed worldwide. The world’s emerging markets have already demonstrated the transformative effects of digital technology, which has saved the economy with old industries slowing sharply.
The digital revolution is as advanced in emerging economies as in developed ones. Among the top 30 nations by tax income from digital services as a share of GDP, 16 are in the emerging world. Since 2017, digital tax income has been growing in emerging countries at an average annual pace of 26%, compared with 11% in the developed ones.
How can it be that poorer nations are adopting digital technologies faster than the rich? One explanation is habit and its absence. In societies with plentiful physical stores and services, customers are often comfortable with and slow to abandon the providers they have. Nations lacking in schools, hospitals and banks will jump at the first digital option that comes along and quickly bridge these gaps by establishing online services.
Since 2010, the cost of starting a business has held steady in developed countries while falling sharply in emerging countries, from 66% to just 27% of the average annual income. Businessmen can now launch businesses affordably, organizing much of what they need on a smartphone.
It’s early days, too. Tech revolutions usually last a long time. Innovations like the car and the steam engine were still transforming economies half a century later. While the pandemic is weakening globalization, the age of rapid digitization has just begun. This offers many developing economies a revolutionary new path to catching up with the living standards of the developed world.
12.Where are people more willing to accept digital services?
    A. In developed societies. B. In overpopulated nations.
    C. In economies with poor online services. D. In countries short of basic public facilities.
13.How do businessmen in emerging countries benefit from digital technology?
    A. They can pay less tax. B. They make stable profits.
    C. They do business at lower costs. D. They enjoy a bigger share of the market.
14.Why are "the car and the steam engine" mentioned in the last paragraph?
    A. To prove old inventions will finally go out of style.
    B. To indicate digitization will have a long-term impact.
    C. To explain innovations will take a long time to be adopted.
    D. To imply developing countries will overtake developed ones.
15.What’s the best title of the text?
    A. The Global Economy Is Looking Up
    B. Emerging Economies Struggle in the Pandemic
    C. Digital Tech Saves the Declining Emerging Markets
    D. Digital Service Is Progressing Slowly in Rich Countries

It was the last day of the month-long summer camp. All the camp leaders and volunteers were preparing for the grand wrap-up event that evening. Some were setting up chairs and tables outside; some were preparing water balloons for games we would play later; and some were cutting fruits and veggies for snacks.
One of the leaders, George, came to me, handed me a small broom and a dustpan, and asked me to sweep the gym. Alone. While the others were chatting and laughing outside. While the gym was dusty and stuffy (不通风的) after weeks of camp and crafts.
I didn’t have a choice. I was sixteen, and George was my elder. I was a staff member at camp, and George was my employer. I put on as cheerful a face as I could and began to sweep the floor of the gymnasium.
Every time I made a decent (合宜的) pile of dust and scraps (残羹剩饭) to push into the dustpan, I had a nice little part of the gym cleared. But I would look up and see the rest of the gym and realize how big the job was. The whole situation felt so unfair.
I wasn’t really happy then. I’m not proud of it, but I was angry as well. I could hear the sounds of people talking, laughing, and generally having a great time outside. There was silence in the gym, except for my sweep, sweep, sweep.
During a break between sweeps, I looked up. George was quietly and matter-of-factly moving the speakers and cleaning the stage at the front of the gym. I noticed he worked alone as well. He didn’t seem particularly excited about what he was doing, but I noted the calmness and joy in his eyes as he went about his work, doing what had to be done because he was there and he was able to do it.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I watched him silently for the next ten minutes.

    A
根据HIKING部分的“No matter what season it is, we explore these great places.”
根据BIKING部分的“we may travel to places like Cape Cod”和“We also take breaks to enjoy the beaches, lighthouses, parks and small towns that we pass along the way.”
根据SNOWBOARDING部分的最后一句“We spend an evening at Crotched Mountain, which offers campfires and live music to enjoy.”
    B
    4.答案:A
根据下文 the boy had to give up the Pokemon toys and choose something else可知,没有得到父亲的允许,小男孩不得不放下自己喜欢的玩具,心情肯定很失望,而不是“高兴”、“兴奋”和“意外”。
根据Well, I just did!
A nicely dressed little girl was excitedly looking through the Barbie dolls as well说明小女孩喜欢的是Barbie dolls .
根据第一段第二句“A new program launched last month in Canada gives some doctors the option of providing patients with a free annual pass to the country's national 2 parks as part of an effort to increase access to nature and the health benefits.(上个月,加拿大启 动了一项新计划,让一些医生可以选择向患者提供免费的国家公园年票,作为增加接触 大自然和提高健康福利而做出努力的一部分)”及第二段第一句“PaRx, a health initiative launched by the BC Parks Foundation in 2019, partnered with Parks Canada to provide doctors across four provinces with an initial run of 100 passes that can be prescribed.(PaRx,是由 BC 公园基金会 2019 发起的一项健康方案,该方案与加拿大公园合作,初期为四个省份的医 生提供了 100 个可以用于处方的通行证)”可知,PaRx 这个方案是用来给患者发放免费公 园通行证的。故选 B。
根据划线词所在句“Doctors utilizing the new national parks pass program are urged to prioritize patients who might not otherwise be able to afford these passes.(使用新 的国家公园通行证计划的医生被敦促要优先考虑那些可能负担不起这些通行证的患者)” 中的后半部分可知,医生被要求给收入不高的患者优先发放免费通行证,由此可推知, 医生首先得有这一项目的使用权才能给患者发放,因而划线词“utilizing”表示“使用”与 “Carrying out 执行”意思相近。
根据最后一段内容“While only 100 adult passes, which give holders access to more than 80 national parks, historic sites and nature reserves, have initially been made available, organizers plan to routinely reassess this number as the program grows, the BC Parks Foundation told NPR(BC 公园基金会告诉 NPR,虽然只有 100 个成人通行证,让持有者可 以进入超过 80 个国家公园、历史遗迹和自然保护区,但随着项目的发展组织者计划定期 重新评估这一数字)”可知,目前的通行证数量不多,但组织者会定期评估数据做出调整, 由此推知,这样就会有越来越多的人因此受益。故选 C。
    11.答案:A
本文主要介绍了 PaRx,这一健康方案的目的及实施中遇到的问题,结 合第二段第一句“PaRx, a health initiative launched by the BC Parks Foundation in 2019, partnered with Parks Canada to provide doctors across four provinces with an initial run of 100 passes that can be prescribed.(开处方)(PaRx,是由 BC 公园基金会 2019 发起的一项健康方 案,该方案与加拿大公园合作,初期为四个省份的医生提供了 100 个可以用于处方的通 行证)”可知“PaRx, a Nature Prescription Program.(PaRx,一个自然处方方案)”可以概括文章 内容,适合作为本文标题。故选 A。
    D
Nations lacking in schools, hospitals and banks will jump at the first digital option that comes along and quickly bridge these gaps by establishing online services.(缺乏学校、 医院和银行的国家将会欣然接受第一个出现的数字化选择, 并通过建立在线服务迅速弥补这些差距。)"
Since 2010, the cost of starting a business has held steady in developed countries while falling sharply in emerging countries, from 66% to just 27% of the average annual income. Businessmen can now launch businesses affordably, organizing much of what they need on a smartphone.(自2010年以来,在发达国家,创业成本一直保持稳定,而在新兴国家,创业成本则大幅下降,从平均年收入的66%降至27%。商人们现在可以负担得起创办企业,用智能手机组织他们需要的很多东西。)"可推断出新兴国家的商人通过以较低的成本做生意来从数字技术中获益,故选C。
    14.答案:B
解析:推理判断题。 根据最后一段的"While the pandemic is weakening globalization the age of rapid digitization has just begun. This offers many developing economies a revolutionary new path to catching up with the living standards of the developed world.(在疫情削弱全球化的同时,快速数字化时代才刚刚开始。这为许多发展中经济体提供了一条革命性的新道路,以赶上发达国家的生活水平。)"可推断出最后一段提到了"汽车和蒸汽机"是为了表明数字化将产生长期影响。故选B。
    15.答案:C
解析:主旨大意题。 通读全文, 尤其是第一段的"People wonder how they will pay debts rung up during the Covid-19 pandemic and how they can grow rapidly as they did in the past.(人们想知道他们将如何偿还Covid-19大流行期间的债务,以及他们如何能像过去那样快速增长。)" The freshest answer is the fast-spreading digital revolution(革命).(最新鲜的答案是迅速蔓延的数字革命。)"
根据前文“There’s no standard rule for how to decide on a major.(选择专业没有标准的规则)”可知,主题为“选择专业”,且后文各段小标题“Start with your interests.(从你的兴趣开始)”,“Think about your abilities.(想想你的能力)”则提及了选择专业的方法,因此可推知,设空句要有转折含义,呼应话题“选择专业”,且对后文有总领作用。选项B“However, here are some ways to narrow it down.(然而,这里有一些缩小范围的方法)”符合语境,“some ways”对应后文各方法,“it”代指前文的“to decide on a major”。
F“Your passions will help present your potential choices for subjects to study.(你热衷的爱好或活动将有助于展示你对学习科目的潜在选择)”符合语境,讲述了热爱的事情有助于选择专业,且“passions”与前文“passionate”为同根词复现原则。
    18. 根据前文“Next, make a list of your skills.(接下来,列出你的技能)”可知,要做一个关于自身能力的列表,后文“Attending some academic programmes or off-campus activities and taking internships are good ways to both explore your interests and gain skills.(参加一些学术课程或校外活动以及实习都是探索兴趣和获得技能的好方法)”则提及了“探索兴趣和获得技能”,因此可推知,设空句应再次提及兴趣列表。选项D“Compare the two lists to see where they overlap.(比较这两个列表,看看它们在哪里重叠)”符合语境,其中“the two lists”指代前文的“兴趣列表”和“技能列表”。
    19. 根据后文“Additionally, you may also want to compare salaries for various careers to see what the future would be like if you had that career.(此外,你可能还想比较不同职业的薪水,看看如果你有这个职业,未来会是什么样子)”可知,该部分的核心话题是“未来的职业”,设空处作为该部分小标题,呼应主题。
G“Meanwhile, you could also turn to some training schools for overseas studies.(同时,你也可以求助于一些海外学习培训学校)”符合语境,其中提及的“some training schools for overseas studies”为专业人士,“meanwhile”与前文构成并列递进关系。

    ①注视:watch/observe/look at
    ②认可:acknowledge/approve/admit
    ①.感谢:showing his appreciation/show his gratitude/be grateful
    ②.气馁:discouraged/lose heart/down-hearted
But what I should have said and what I want to say to him now is this: “Thank you for teaching me and showing me what being a good leader looks like.(运用了what引导的主语从句和宾语从句)
Thank you for the opportunity to sweep the floor of the gym, because now whenever I feel discouraged, I remember that half hour, and am reminded that doing the hard, right thing matters, no matter how I feel about it.”(运用了because引导的原因状语从句、whenever引导的时间状语从句和no matter how引导的让步状语从句)

    One Possible Version:
I watched him silently for the next ten minutes. My broom and I were making slow but sure progress across the gym. Slowly, my unhappiness and anger left my heart, and in its place grew an appreciation for what I saw in George. Being a leader doesn’t mean getting to do all the fun things. It means sacrifice and hard work. I cleaned the whole gym with a small broom, one sweep at a time. As I finished and passed him, he looked up and smiled at me and I smiled back. I was tired; it was a tired smile; but it was a real smile.
“Thanks, Laura.” he said and nodded as if acknowledging the small sacrifice I had made. I forgot what I said in return. Probably “You’re welcome.” But what I should have said and what I want to say to him now is this: “Thank you for teaching me and showing me what being a good leader looks like. Thank you for the opportunity to sweep the floor of the gym, because now whenever I feel discouraged, I remember that half hour, and am reminded that doing the hard, right thing matters, no matter how I feel about it.”
