Text 1
W: It’s a beautiful day. We should go for a walk in the woods. I bet a lot of people will be having picnics there today.
M: There will be too many people there. A drive to the seaside would be better.
Text 2
W: Where have you been? I have been waiting here for ages.
M: I got out of bed early and set off on time but then the bus got stuck in traffic.
W: Sounds like you’re not to blame.
Text 3
M: I need a new plug for the TV. My TV is old but I like it and it still works well.
W: I think you should throw it away and buy another, but it is up to you.
Text 4
M: This place is a bit expensive, isn’t it?
W: I know. Look at the price of the wine. It only costs a quarter as much at the supermarket.
M: Never mind. It’s our anniversary. Order whatever you want. I think I’ll have the steak.
Text 5
M: Maybe I should set off for the airport now. John’s plane will arrive soon. He asked me to collect him in the car.
W: You have plenty of time. It’s only 3:00 p.m. You have two hours.
Text 6
M: Oh, what a surprise to see you! Is there a problem?
W: Yes, I think there is. I have been trying to call you all morning but I couldn’t get an answer.
M: That’s strange. Let me check my phone. I hope it isn’t broken.
W: There is an important meeting at work this afternoon. I wanted to let you know about it.
M: Ah, when I saw you at the door, I thought someone might be ill or have had an accident.
W: No, nothing like that. I just couldn’t get you on the phone. Is it switched on?
M: I’ll have a look. Now I remember — I put it in my coat pocket and my coat is in the car! No wonder I couldn’t hear you calling.
Text 7
M: Is that the Homes Bureau? Could I make an appointment to see the house on Wood Avenue?
W: Yes, of course.
M: I saw it on a website. How many bedrooms does it have?
W: There’s one on the first floor and two on the second floor.
M: What is the kitchen like?
W: It’s quite large, and there’s a large living room as well, with a bathroom on each floor.
M: The price is quite high.
W: Well, that is the price the owners have asked — but you may be able to do a deal with them. The best thing for you to do is go and look at the house and talk to the owners.
M: Can I go this afternoon?
W: Maybe that’s too soon. Would tomorrow morning be OK, say 10:00 a.m.?
M: Yes, that would be fine.
Text 8
M: Do you usually add that much sugar to your coffee?
W: Well, you know tea is my favorite, though I am trying to like the taste of coffee. I find it is too bitter.
M: When I started drinking coffee, I added lots of milk and sugar. As I got older, I cut out milk entirely. Now I don’t even add sugar. I just drink it black.
W: Black coffee? No, thank you. However, coffee ice cream, I would gladly try that.
M: Sure, have you tried chocolate ice cream mixed in with coffee? It’s heavenly. Even if you don’t like coffee that much, I bet you will like that.
W: I’ll try it if you’re buying. And I will treat you to green tea ice cream if you want to have a try.
M: Deal, let’s have a tea time dessert party. Invite a few of your friends, and I will invite some of mine. We will see who has the best taste.
W: Well, that doesn’t sound sweet.
Text 9
W: It’s dad’s 50th birthday on Saturday. It’s a big day for him, so perhaps we should do something special.
M: You mean a party?
W: I thought about that, but maybe that would be hard to organize during the exam time.
M: That’s true. I do have three tests next week. Maybe we could take him to the cinema.
W: I don’t think that would be special enough.
M: We could go for a meal to his favorite restaurant — all the family.
W: That’s the best idea. I think he’d like that — you, your sister, dad and me. It would be nice.
M: I’ll call Jane and tell her not to make other arrangements.
W: Where is she?
M: Her friend Alice called and they went over to Judy’s house.
W: That girl spends more time there than she does with us.
M: Well, we’ll be together as a family on Saturday.
W: If we can get a table at the restaurant, that is.
M: I don’t think it will be a problem. It’s only Monday. They shouldn’t be booked up yet. Give them a call.
W: I’ll do that right away. Then this afternoon I will go to town and buy dad a present.
M: Get him a birthday cake as well.
W: No, I think I’ll make one myself. It feels nicer when someone has made an effort.
Text 10
M: Hello everyone and welcome to the garden seminar. We all know that plants grow well in warm and sunny places, but we aren’t all lucky enough to live somewhere like that. Bill and Sally Jones live in a high, windy area — not ideal for gardening — but they are also champion vegetable growers. How do they do it? Well, we all know that vegetables need plenty of water — not just a few drops or a few pints, but gallons of it. It rains a lot where the Jones family live, so they have a good water supply. It’s also very open, so they get enough sunlight. The real enemy is the wind. They tried different ways of protecting the plants — planting trees for shelter and building fences — but what they use now for the more delicate plants are glass houses. With several of these they are able to grow plants which would not normally survive in their location. By adapting to the conditions in which they live, Bill and Sally have developed a winning way with their crops. And their experience can serve as a lesson for other growers who experience similar difficulties.

In Mombasa on the coast of Kenya is a place called Haller Park. People flood there to see 180 local species of plants and trees, and a variety of animals including hippos and giraffes.
In The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times, Jane Goodall discusses the park as an example of how our injured Earth can be restored and healed. At one point the park was “a large and frightening five-hundred-acre scar (伤疤) where almost nothing grew” because a cement (水泥) company dug large amounts of stone out of the ground. The company decided to repair the damage. Year by year, by growing flowers, fruit and vegetables and with introduction of wild animals, the area was changed.
It’s extremely important, Jane Goodall says in the book, that people — especially young people — know how positive action can still turn around the frightening path of climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and the ongoing global pandemic (疫情). “It’s mostly because people are so overpowered by our stupidity that they feel helpless,” Goodall states. They need to hear stories of “the people who succeed because they won’t give up.”
Jane Goodall is one of those people herself. She is the world’s leading chimpanzee (黑猩猩) expert; UN Messenger of Peace; winner of the 2021 Templeton Prize; activist through the Jane Goodall Institute and its many projects that help local communities and the environment; and author of numerous books, the first of which, In the Shadow of Man, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
Goodall speaks plainly and effectively throughout the book. As troubling as this current pandemic is, “we must not let this take our attention away from the far greater threat to our future — the climate crisis and the loss of biodiversity,” she says. Goodall calls each of us to action: “Let us use the gift of our lives to make this a better world.”
24. Why do a large number of people go to Haller Park?
A. To admire the wildlife there. B. To write books on parks.
C. To study Kenya culture. D. To work for a company.
25. What does Goodall hope the story of Haller Park serves as?
A. A messenger of peace. B. A scar to remember.
C. A hope for a better world. D. An example to avoid.
26. What can we learn about Goodall from the last two paragraphs?
A. She published her first book 50 years ago.
B. She adopted and brought up many chimpanzees.
C. She calls on people to focus more on the pandemic.
D. She is full of fear for the future of the world.
27. What is the text?
A. A news report. B. A tour guide. C. A biography. D. A book review.
【答案】24. A 25. C 26. A 27. D

Jo Land, a 53-year-old teacher, was horrified when she realised how much her son’s school uniform was going to cost. She started thinking: “If it was this expensive for us, how on Earth must families with more children cope? And that’s not taking into account the cost of living. Food, fuel and energy prices are going up for everyone. It seems wrong if it prevents some children from attending school. ”
Therefore, Land bought a new plastic dustbin and put it outside her house, with a sign reading, “School uniform drop-off”. She set up an online group called School Uniform Swap and asked people to donate good-quality used uniforms for free. The operation started to grow almost immediately. People drive up and drop the clothing in her bin. Land sorts through it, keeps it and posts details about donations on her group. Recipients can come and collect at their leisure. She even drops clothes at the homes of people without cars.
“Every child going to school deserves to feel smart and proud. We don’t want children to go to school feeling negative, because that affects their learning. ”Land says. There is also a beneficial impact on the environment—the project stops good-quality uniforms ending up as landfill. Land has noticed that people rarely take without also giving: “Sometimes people leave flowers on the bin, or they drop off some outgrown clothes as well, even if it’s just a polo shirt or a few jumpers.” She says she has never received soiled uniform: “Everything is always really clean.”
Parents send messages to express their thanks, saying she is doing a wonderful thing and talking about how hard things are at the moment. Land also receives so many messages from people who are absolutely desperate, because they cannot afford uniforms for their children. She is thinking about all the people in her community who will struggle this winter. Her determination to ensure children can access the uniforms they deserve grows ever stronger.
28. What inspired Land to launch the donation of school uniforms?
A. The school’s request. B. The environmental needs.
C. The price of school uniforms. D. The students’ personal tastes.
29. What can we know about the used uniforms?
A. They are of high quality. B. People mainly swap them online.
C. They are sold at low cost. D. People have to drive to get them.
30. Which of the following can best describe Land?
A. Curious and diligent. B. Considerate and cautious.
C. Inspiring and courageous. D. Responsible and determined.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. Uniform exchange to protect nature.
B. Uniform swap to help the disadvantaged.
C. Recycling school uniforms becoming popular
D. Low-income families struggling for uniforms.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. B

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a fashion word in recent years, and its impact on society is growing rapidly. AI refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that would typically require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making. This technology is transforming every industry, from healthcare to finance, and is expected to revolutionize the future.
One area where AI is making significant strides is healthcare. AI-powered tools can analyze vast amounts of medical data and help doctors make more informed diagnoses and treatment decisions. This technology is particularly useful in fields such as radiology, where AI algorithms can analyze medical images to detect abnormalities that may be missed by human eyes.
In finance, AI is being used to analyze vast amounts of data to identify patterns and predict market trends. This technology can help traders make more informed decisions and reduce the risks of financial losses. Similarly, AI -powered chatbots are being used in customer service, helping to improve response times and provide personalized support.
As the use of AI grows, concerns about job displacement have also arisen. Some fear that AI-powered machines and robots will replace human workers, leading to mass unemployment. While this is a possibility, it is also important to note that AI will create new jobs in fields such as data analysis, software development, and robotics.
Another major concern about Al is the potential for bias and discrimination. AI algorithms are only as good as the data they are trained on, and if that data contains biases, the algorithms will also be biased. This issue is particularly concerning in fields such as criminal justice, where AI-powered systems are being used to make decisions about sentencing. If these algorithms are biased, they could make existing inequalities continue in the criminal justice system.
Despite these concerns, the benefits of AI are numerous and undeniable. However, to ensure that these benefits are accessible to all and to address concerns about bias and discrimination, it is crucial to continue researching and developing moral AI.
32. Al outweighs humans in healthcare in that it ___________.
A. stops financial risks. B. ensures precise judgement.
C. recognizes market tendency. D. offers personalized services.
33. What is one of the major concerns of AI?
A. New jobs will be unavailable. B. Algorithms will be out of date.
C. Unfairness may arise in criminal justice system. D. A large number of human workers will be laid off.
34. How does the writer mainly develop this text?
A. By stating facts and citing quotes.
B. By showing different ideas and giving reasons.
C. By presenting influences and listing examples.
D. By comparing research results and offering suggestions.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Artificial Intelligence: Becoming a Fashion Word
B. Artificial Intelligence: Revolutionizing the Future
C. Artificial Intelligence: Bettering Decision Making
D. Artificial Intelligence: Improving Human Abilities
【答案】32. B33. D34. C35. B
