The year’s hottest jobs are hiring in large quantities, paying well, and providing room to grow.

Each year, U. S. draws up a list of the Best Careers based on the Labor Department’s employment estimation. And this year, we continue to base our picks for the Best Jobs of 2022 on professions that should hire abundantly over the next several years. To better help you make a smart career choice, we’ve also started ranking our selections.

    4. Medical Assistant Salary Range: $20,810-$40,190

While learning the science lessons, I used to get a doubt-why ears, nose, tongue and eyes should be called as special senses? The basic reason is that these are the channels through which we maintain contact with the surroundings. Though apparently it may feel like these are individual sensory organs, they do show some connectivity. Interestingly, our hearing is less sharp after we eat a heavy food. Isn't it good for a sound nap after a stomach-full meal? That does not mean we go deaf after a meal, but the hearing pitch does change after a heavy meal.

We usually give credit of the taste to our tongue, but do you know that unless saliva dissolves something, our tongue cannot recognize the taste of the food eatenTaste is nothing but the food chemicals dissolved in the saliva being sensed by the taste buds present on the tongue. Try to dry off your tongue and mouth with a tissue paper and then taste something.

Women are much better smellers than men. They are born with this characteristic ability and can correctly pinpoint the exact fragrance of the sample. We all can store almost 50, 000 different scents, which are strongly tied to the memories.

Pupils do not respond to light alone, but to the slightest bit of noise around too. Thus surgeons, watchmakers and those professionals who have to perform a much delicate job do prefer to have a sound-free environment. Even a small noise can dilate their pupils, change the focus and blur their vision. If you do not wear glasses or contact lens due to having a 6/6 vision, you are just among the one third of the human population. It is now statistically proved that only one third of the population has perfect vision, the rest all are either wearing glasses or are trying to read with a compromised vision.

Each and every one of us has a particular or individualistic or characteristic smell, which is unique to us, except for the identical twins. This smell is very subtle yet can be sensed even by a newborn. It may be due to this scent that the newborn recognizes the presence of his parents around. Many of us can pinpoint the smell of our significant friends and colleagues. A significant part of this phenomenon is guided by genetics but it is also changed by the environment, diet and personal hygiene. This all together creates the unique chemistry that is individualistic for each person.

    4. What does the example of “heavy meal and hearing” in the first paragraph prove?

    A. Every sensory organs has its specific function.

    B. We easily fall asleep after eating a heavy meal.

    C. We feel the world through our eyes, ears, nose and tongue.

    D. All the individual sensory organs are actually connected.

    5. What does the underlined sentence in the second paragraph mean?

    A. Our sense of taste becomes sharper when our tongue is dry.

    B. The chemical dissolved in the saliva helps digest food eaten.

    C. Saliva plays an important role in identifying the taste of food.

    D. The taste buds works better when there is less saliva in the mouth.

    6. Which of the following person prefers a quiet environment?

    A. A craftsman who is working on a diamond.

    B. An actor who is doing rehearsal.

    C. A pilot who is flying a plane.

    D. An engineer who is checking machines.

    7. According to the passage, how does a newborn sense his parents are with him?

A The identical genes guide him.

    B. He can recognize their unique smell.

C He can hear their individual voices.

    D. The sensor in his brain picks them out.

    C

With greater climate catastrophe (气候突变) on Earth, it is natural for us to make every effort to stop the potential floods, snowstorms, and alarming reports from scientists. For many of us (myself included), part of that means running out to buy reusable straws, organic cleaners, and packaging-free products.

However, before you are delighted at “green” purchases, take a second to consider the results of a new study from Arizona University. By comparing the shopping habits, mental health and environmental impact of young people, the researchers reconfirmed a principle: Buying less beats buying “green” stuff without effort. And that is true whether you are looking at the impact that your purchases have on the Earth or on your own happiness.

It should not come as a shock that simply consuming less is better for the planet. After all, every new item a factory yields requires some resources to produce. Take plastic bag bans for instance. If your city is getting rid of single-use shopping bags, it can be attractive to pay for a fashionable organic cotton bag hanging in the check-out line of your local supermarket. However, experts insist that growing cotton is actually no better for the Earth than producing the conventional plastic bags. Then what is your best bet for carrying your groceries if you care about sustainability? Any bag you already own.

It is not just the Earth that will be happier if you buy less. You will feel more contented too, according to the new study. “People believe that they might well be self-satisfied about becoming environmentally conscious through ‘green’ buying patterns, but it doesn’t seem to be that way”, said the lead researcher Sabrina Helm. “Reduced consumption has effects on increased well-being, but we don’t see that with ‘green’ consumption.”

“Owning every new ‘green’ product on the market might make you feel contented, but if you relieve yourself of that burden of ownership, most people report feeling a lot better,” said Helm.

8 Why does the writer mention “green” shopping habits?

    A. To call on a green lifestyle. B. To praise people’s green efforts.

    C. To introduce a social trend. D. To present a half true “green” truth.

    9. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?

    A. The plastic bag bans are of no effect. B. Using any bag you have is the best bet.

    C. Reduced consumption is better for the Earth. D. Growing cotton is far worse for the Earth.

    10. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to?

A The sense of achievement. B. The sense of happiness.

    C. The sense of relief. D. The sense of security.

    11. What might be the best title for the text?

    A. Less is More B. The Greener, The Happier

    C. Happiness Guarantee D. What Are Green Products?

    D

We often hear that 60 is the new 50. Just check out the images of your grandparents or great-grandparents and notice their stooped(曲背的) bodies, their wrinkled faces when they were barely pushing 60. What a contrast with energetic, gym-going sexagenarians(六十几岁的人) of today!

The research overseen by gerontologist (老年学家) Taina Rantanen, compared adults born in 1910 and 1914 with those born roughly 30 years later. Both birth groups were examined in person at age 60 and again at 70 with the same set of six physical tests and five measures of cognition.

According to the research, the later-born group could walk faster, had a stronger hand grasp and could use more force with their lower legs. On cognitive tests, the later-born group had better verbal fluency, and scored higher on a test matching numbers to symbols. But not everything changed across the generations: measures of lung function were surprisingly not changing, and there was no improvement in the short-term-memory task of recalling a series of digits(数字).

There are many reasons why people are aging better, including improved medical care and a drop in smoking, but the key factor shown in the study of physical function was that the later-born adults were more physically active and had bigger bodies, which suggested better nutrition. For brain function, the key seemed to be more years of education.

“Education is a powerful influence on aging and health,” says Luigi Ferrucci, scientific director of the U. S. National Institute on Aging. “With more education, you are probably going to have a larger income, which means you are more likely to go to the doctor, and have good nutrition.” He also points out that the average lifespan is seven years shorter in a poor state such as Mississippi than in a wealthier one such as California. “Here we still have lots of people who cannot take the drugs they need because they cannot pay for them,” he says. In short, 60 may be the new 50 for many of us but not for all.

    12. How does the writer begin the passage?

    A. By imagining a scene. B. By making a comparison.

    C. By raising a question. D. By presenting an image.

    13. Which of the following is true about the research?

    A. Not everything changed across the generations.

    B. The later-born group could hardly grasp things tightly.

    C. The later-born group did worse in matching numbers to symbols.

    D. There was a little improvement in short-term memory in both groups.

    14. According to the research, what contributes most to better physical aging?

    A. Improved medical care. B. Education.

    C. Better nutrition. D. Energetic images.

    15. What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. Many reasons contribute to people’s better physical function.

    B. Today’s energetic sexagenarians have much better images.

    C. Education is the key to people’s better aging.

    D. People today are aging better than people born earlier.

    第二节(10分)从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

How to Set New Year's Resolutions That Stick

Some people love the tradition of setting a goal each January 1. ___16___If you want to improve your chances of sticking to your 2022 New Year's resolution, scientists suggest you choose a goal that's concrete and achievable. Here are more science-based tips for you.

    1. Consider a penalty clause (惩罚条款).

This may sound upsetting, but can work wonders. ___17___ Then you'll feel ashamed if they check back later and find out you haven't followed through. You can also make a bet with a friend that you'll stick to your resolution or pay. The truth behind is that penalties are even more motivating than rewards.

    2. Make it fun.

If you want to be a straight-A student, you probably assume long, distraction-free study sessions (时段) are key. ___18___ Research has shown that if you get pleasure, you'll persist longer. One way to make pursuing a goal more fun is to combine it with a guilty pleasure. Consider, for example, only letting yourself drink your favorite coffee during a study session. Then there is a hook to get you to the library.

    3. Allow for emergencies.

You planned to get to bed early every night but couldn't resist staying up late one Friday. After that, your early-to-bed plans went out the window because “what the hell,” you'd already failed. Researchers call this the “what the hell effect.” ___19___ By setting tough goals but giving yourself one or two get-out-of-jail-free cards each week, you can get better results.

    4. ___20___

Spending time around high achievers can improve your own performance. You'll pick up a bit because you tend to follow their patterns of behavior. Strangely enough, there is evidence that coaching (辅导) friends with shared goals can improve your success rate, too.

    A. Get a little help from your friends.

    B. Tell a few friends about your goal.

    C. Happily, there is a way out of this trap.

    D. The logic for why this works is simple.

    E. There are various games that make learning fun.

    F. But if it's not fun to study, you're unlikely to keep at it.

    G. Others argue it's a waste of time since most resolutions fail.
