You either have it, or you don’t –a sense of direction, that is. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose themselves in the next street?

Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it .

“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around.” says Jim Martland. Research Director of the project. “However if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills”

Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions.

●If you are using a map, turn it so it relates to the way you are facing.

●If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route

●Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are.

Now you need never get lost again!

    21. What is true of seven-year-old children according to the passage?

    A. They never have a sense of direction without maps.

    B. They have a sense of direction and can find their way around.

    C. They should never be allowed out alone if they lack a sense of direction.

    D. They can develop a good sense of direction if they are driven around in a car.

    22. If you leave your bike in a strange place, you should ________.

    A. remember something easily recognizable on the route

    B. draw a map of the route to help remember where it is

    C. avoid taking the same route when you come back in it

    D. tie it to a tree so as to prevent it from being stolen

    23. According to the passage the best way to find your way around is to ________.

    A. ask policemen for directions

    B. count the number of landmarks that you see.

    C. use walls, streams, and streets to guide yourself .

    D. remember your route by looking out for steps and stairs.

    21~23题答案】

    【答案】21. B    22. A    23. C

    B

Water runs downhill from mountaintops to streams to rivers to oceans. But downhill isn’t the only way that water moves. A new study measures how water travels from country to country for human consumption. This flow isn’t the type we usually think about. These scientists looked at the water used to grow and make the products which get shipped from nation to nation as imports or exports. They call this a flow of “virtual water”.

We typically think about water as the liquid that flows from a tap. However, 92of the water used by people goes into growing crops, according to water researcher Arjen Hoekstra. He recently studied the hidden travels of virtual water used in products made from things like crops and meats. These products are shipped around the world.

For example, consider a sugary soft drink, Hoekstra estimated that to produce one half-liter of the drink requires between 170 and 310 liters of the water—about 95—is used to grow and process the ingredients(原料). Another 4goes into the packaging and labeling. In Hoekstra’s calculation, when one country produces a half-liter of soda and sells it abroadit exports as much virtual water as would fill a large refrigerator.

According to Hoekstra’s new report, dry countries like Israel and Kuwait, both in the Middle East, get the majority of their virtual water from other countries, through imported products. More surprisingly, some wetter countries, like the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, also get the majority of their virtual water from other places. That means that most of the water used to grow or produce the products and food consumed in those countries came from other countries.

In the United States most of the virtual water used comes from American sources. In China even less of the water associated with its products.

Hoekstra and his team turned up other surprising relationships. For example, dry areas in northern China send virtual water to the southern part of that country, which is wetter, “There are exporting regions that do have a lot of water stress,” he said in an interview.

    24. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

    A. Crops and Virtual Water

    B. Import and Export of Water

    C. Benefits of Virtual Water

    D. Water’s worldwide travels

    25. The example of a sugary soft drink in Paragraph 3 is given to show________.

    A. how drinks are made

    B. how drinks are shipped

    C. how virtual water is used

    D. how virtual water is exported

    26. The passage is most probably a________.

    A. science news report

    B. science book review

    C. science fiction story

    D. newspaper advertisement

    27. In which countries does most part of virtual water come from outside?

    A. Israel and America

    D. China and the United Kingdom

Not very long ago, the question would have seemed absurd. Now it is on the lips of respected scientists; MPs (议员) are beginning to talk of “a war on sugar,” and even England’s chief medical officer has said sugar may have to be, like the old enemy tobacco, taxed in order to protect the nation’s health.

There came a time in the evolution of public attitudes to smoking, when the doctors had been shouting for long enough that the public was broadly aware of the risks and the only question left for Government was: what should we do about it?

Some believe we are now at the same point in our attitudes to sugar. Others—largely but not only representatives of the food and drink industry—say the entire debate has been skewed (歪曲) by those who spread stories deliberately to make people nervous.

More or less everyone agrees that eating too much sugar is bad for you. There is also no doubt obesity is a growing problem which is putting a significant, avoidable burden on the NHS by increasing the rates of diabetes, heart disease and other long-term conditions.

But to what extent is sugar—rather than saturated fats, or salt, carbohydrates or proteins, or any of the other devils of modern diets—the cause of obesity and how much should we worry about it?

Yesterday, hopes of achieving anything resembling clarity (清楚) from the World Health Organisation (WHO) were confused once again, which, widely expected to reduce the recommended sugar intake by a half in new draft guidance, instead said it would continue to recommend that sugar make up no more than 10 percent of the energy we consume, while adding that cutting this to five percent would have “additional benefits”. The decision will now go out to public consultation.

Simon Capewell, professor of the University of Liverpool, said that he suspected “dirty work” on the part of food and drinks companies might lie behind the WHO’s less than resounding message.

“The food industry say Government has no business interfering (介入) in families, we must protect personal choice,” Professor Capewell said. “We say there is no personal choice. At the moment, mother can walk into a supermarket with a choice of four tomato soups—with three, or four, or five teaspoons of sugar in them. She has a choice of thousands of ready meals—with five, or six, or even nine teaspoons of sugar in.”

    28. By referring to smoking the author indicates that       .

    A. sugar has just turned out to be as harmful as smoking

    B. it is not easy for authorities to restrict or ban something

    C. it is easy for people to see bad effects of something

    D. people must see the disadvantages of sugar immediately

    29. WHO has changed its idea mainly because       .

    A. it thinks the danger of sugar to health is overemphasized

B it finds it safe to take in as much sugar as people do now

    C. it believes certain amount of intake of sugar does us good

    D. it has been put under pressure by food and drinks companies

    30. When reporting the argument about sugar, the author seems to       .

    A. remain objective B. stand by those against it

    C. believe it harmless D. hold the view of “wait-and-see”

    31. Which of the following can be the proper title for the passage?

    A. Is sugar the new evil? B. How much sugar do you take daily?

    C. Is sugar to be taxed? D. How much do you know about sugar?

In the past 15 years, Chad Pregracke has helped pull more than 67, 000 tires from the Mississippi River and other waterways across the United States.

But that’s just scratching the surface. He’s also helped retrieve 218 washing machines, 19 tractors, 12 hot tubs, 4 pianos and almost 1, 000 refrigerators.

For Pregracke, removing this debris pieces of wood, metal, brick, etc. has become his life's work. Sometimes called “The Rivers’ Garbageman”, he lives on a barge (驳船) about nine months out of the year with members of his 12-person crew. Together, they organize community cleanups along rivers across the country.

It’s a dirty job, but Pregracke took it on because he realized that no one was doing it. It began as a solo (独自的) effort, and over the years his energy and enthusiasm have helped it grow. To date, about 70, 000 volunteers have joined him, helping collect more than 7 million pounds of debris through his nonprofit.

Pregracke grew up in East Moline, Illinois, where the Mississippi River was in his backyard. As a teenager, he worked as a commercial shell diver and began to notice the heaps of debris in the waterway—one that supplies drinking water to 18 million people in more than 50 U.S. cities

“I saw thousands of barrels, thousands of tires, cars, trucks and tops of school buses... I got sick of seeing it and just wanted to do something about it,” he said.

Pregracke got a small fund from a company in 1997 and spent that summer cleaning a 35-mile stretch of the river by himself. He would transport the trash by boat and sort it on his parents’ lawn to be recycled. By year’s end, he had single-handedly pulled around 45, 000 pounds of trash out of the river.

His nonprofit now has a fleet of boats. And while he has resources and know-how, he depends on each community he visits to supply the manpower needed to get the job done. At the cleanup sites, Pregracke’s humor creates cheerful atmosphere-something he knows is necessary for the work that they do. His team uses motivational speeches and music to get the volunteers amped up(陶醉).

“We do everything in our power to get people excited about it,” Pregracke said. “ We wanted people to leave feeling good about what they did so they will contribute more here.”

Pregracke views his work as a different kind of service to the country

“A lot of people call me a conservationist or an environmentalist, but the thing is I’m no different than anybody else,” he said.

Ultimately, Pregracke believes his story is proof that anyone can make a difference: “If I had one thing to say, it wouldn’t even be about rivers necessarily. It would be about finding a cause that’d dear to you and taking action.”

There are plentiful ways to help increase your efficiency. ____36____ But according to time management trainers, employing even one of the strategies can save most people hours each week.

Clarify actual expectations. When you take on a significant task, talk with key participants about what they expect. Perhaps they need a PowerPoint deck; perhaps they don’t. ____37____ By clarifying what’s actually needed and to what level, you can save hours of time on getting tasks done.

____38____ Depending on what you need to accomplish, you can potentially save time by sharing what you’ve done by word of mouth. When you are asked to research a particular topic, instead of writing up a formal presentation, you may accomplish your purposes in less time during a one-on-one discussion. This strategy also works well if you need to communicate about more abstract concepts.

Develop templates (模板) and checklists. To speed up your process on routine items, come up with a template or checklist. You might want templates for activities like putting together reports or presentations. Checklists are valuable for weekly planning or other repeated activities. ____39____You can keep them more systematically, but simply having them recorded in a Word document is sufficient.

Time box your work. Finally, a strategy for doing a good job faster is deciding how much time you will spend on a task, and them sticking to it. If you tend to overinvest in the research stage, you may want to tell yourself you have to stop after one to two hours. Time boxing doesn’t guarantee you’ll finish the work in the assigned time. ____40____

    A. Make it a conversation.

    B. Communicate with others in time.

    C. However, it can definitely help with focus.

    D. It means you spend less time and still do a good job.

    E. Which strategies work best vary from person to person.

    F. Both will save you time on remembering or deciding what to do.

    G. Maybe a comprehensive plan is required or just an outline will work.

    66题答案】

    【答案】One possible version:

    Dear Sir/Madam,

I’m Li Hua. I’m writing to apply to be a volunteer of the International Tourism Fair.

First of all, I am willing to provide advice for the public. I’d feel honored if I had a chance to do voluntary work for the visitors from all over the world. Secondly, I can speak English fluently, which enables me to communicate well with foreigners. Last but not least, I was a volunteer in an international sports event last year and gained much voluntary experience. So I think I am one of the best qualified candidates.

Please take my application into consideration and I’m looking forward to your early reply.

    Yours,

    Li Hua

    第二节(满分25分)

    67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was a child, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of different flowers, and roses were the most beautiful of them. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother, reading stories to me. When I was in primary school and old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.

I will never forget one day when I had been picked to be the princess in the school play. For weeks my mother had practised my lines so hard with me. But however easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (叙述者) part to the play, and asked me to change my role. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.

I didn’t tell my mother what had happened that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden.

It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass, as if a painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion.

“I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”

“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.”

My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over.

“And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.”

Realizing that she had guessed my pain, I started crying as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.

    67题答案】

【答案】“But you can make a good narrator,” she said with encouragement in her eyes. It reminded me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her. Mother enlightened me that the narrator’s part was equally crucial, whose wise words inspired me with courage and confidence. But on the point of the performance, I suddenly felt nervous backstage again, my palms sweaty and kneels soft. Just then, my teacher came over to me, handing me a dandelion from my mother. Looking at it, I knew my mother was out there for me, which calmed me down.

After successful performance in the play, I took home the dandelion carefully. Upon arriving home, I made the dandelion it into a dried flower. Witnessing what I was busy doing, my mother watched me fondly and delightedly. With the well preserved dandelion, I participated in various school plays, rehearsed different roles and made spontaneous speeches ever since. Gradually, I’ve become really good at performing and public speaking, seldom feeling nervous onstage now. Every time I see it, I am reminded of this unforgettable experience and the profound wisdom.
