One side effect of globalization and the related phenomenon of greatly increased mobility is that the traditional definition of “foreigner” has passed its sell-by date.
Is a European who has lived in China longer than in his home country, becoming fluent in the language and culture in the process, still a foreigner in China, or has he become more of a foreigner in his own home town? What about a Beijinger who did her schooling in Canada and then lived and worked in mainstream society there for another 20 years while raising a family, who has no intention of returning to China? Does she think and act like a foreigner? What do we mean by this label?
When I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, the faces you would see during a walk through a local shopping mall back in the 1960s and 1970s included almost none of Asian descent. Today the same malls are full of Asian faces, and a glance at the ranks of top scoring students in local schools reveals lots of Asian surnames.
To some extent, this is no great surprise in the American context, because America is a land of immigrants, and a cultural melting pot. Apart from the native American Indians, Americans are (or were), in some way, all foreigners anyway. Absorbing a large number of immigrants is an established pattern in American history.
In most places, the traditional foreigners were people who didn’t speak or read the local languages well, were unfamiliar with local customs and lifestyles, often engaged in relatively third-class work, and certainly not the type of people you would want your sons or daughters to marry. But, nowadays, a foreigner down the street may have better SAT scores than you did, or higher degree from a better university. He might also be your son’s or daughter’s next employer.
The traditional role models are getting mixed up, and it looks like this is just the beginning of a new chapter. Today, the whole thing has totally changed. It’s not about where people are from or what color their skins are. It’s about who they are, what values and skills they bring, and how they think.
1.By mentioning a European and a Beijinger, the author tends to tell us ______.
A.it’s no long proper to define foreigners according to their birthplaces
B.the label of foreigners can never be removed

B.Today, more and more Asian travelers like to shop in Chicago.
C.There are more Asian immigrants today than in 1960s and 1970s in Chicago.
D.Most Asian students do well academically in the schools in Chicago.

Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. I couldn’t believe that those trees can have a healing(治愈的)effect on people.
According to World Health Organization, 40 percent of American adults have at least two chronic(慢性病的)diseases, which include high blood pressure, mood disorders, heart problems and diabetes. According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. That’s why there are dozens of programs that prescribe nature as a potential form of healing. Nature is everywhere.
There are two major theories as to why nature is so good for our brains. The first one is called attention restoration theory. When we spend time in busy urban environments, all the hard edges, traffic, lights and people everywhere really make us have to constantly focus our attention on these things. Whereas when you spend time in nature, it helps restore your powers of attention and reduce that tiredness and bad-temper. The second major theory is called stress reduction theory. So basically, when we spend time in nature after stressful events, it helps us feel better and recover faster.
When I recommended nature for the first time to a patient of mine, he actually just nodded his head and said, “You’re absolutely right. When I spend more time in nature, I feel better.” And so, I think healthcare providers have to get over our own traditional mental views against this new sort of lifestyle, and prescribe something evidence-based, like nature time more often.
This is worth the effort to do. You need to get out of doors and just be surrounded by the greenery and by nature. You’ll feel calmer. You’ll feel less depressed and less anxious. It’s just a great way to deal with the stress of modern life.
6.Which word can replace the underlined word “prescribe”?
A.Practice. B.Provide. C.Suggest. D.Explore.
7.What is the function of paragraph 2?
A.To clarify a concept. B.To lead in the topic.
C.To make a conclusion. D.To provide evidence.
8.How does nature help people according to the two major theories?
A.Refresh oneself. B.Live a better life.
C.Improve urban environments. D.Deal with stressful issues.
9.What can be inferred according to paragraph 4?
A.It is not easy to get in nature.
B.Nature treatment is still unpopular.
C.Most patients prefer nature treatment.
D.Doctors usually recommend nature to patients.
We’ve all faced it at one time or another: after laundry, a messy pile of clean clothes are waiting hours to be put away. There are plenty of machines that can wash and dry clothes. So why isn’t there a way to similarly automate the terrible folding process?
Researchers have looked into it over the years and as it turns out, robots just don’t do well in folding clothes. As is reported, machines need clear rules in order to function, and it’s hard for them to figure out what exactly is going on in those messy piles-say, where the sweater stops and where the towel begins. In sum, most robots have not generally been equipped for the task. But an international group of researchers say their new method could change that, or at least speed up the process.
Researchers are calling the new method SpeedFolding. It’s a “reliable and efficient bimanual system”—meaning it involves two hands—that’s able to smooth and fold clothes in record speed for robots. SpeedFolding can fold 30 to 40 pieces of clothing per hour, compared to previous models that averaged 3 to 6 pieces in that same time length, according to researchers.
SpeedFolding takes a different approach. Its novel network studied 4,300 human and machine-assisted actions in order to learn how to smooth and fold clothes from a random pattern. That process can involve a number of defined movements including dragging, moving and “pick-and-place”.
While researchers describe SpeedFolding as a significant improvement, it’s not likely to hit the market anytime soon. For one, researchers tracked down a robot similar to the one they used and found that it sold for $58,000. For another, researchers say there’s more they want to explore, including methods with which the robot can learn to work on a novel piece of clothing when given a few demonstrations. But there’s always hope that folding in the future will get even neater.
10.Why are robots poor at folding clothes?
A.It is difficult for them to obey clear human orders.
B.They are lacking in enough folding demonstrations.
C.They have trouble handling the random patterns of clothes.
D.It is difficult for them to remember the folding movements.
11.What do we know about SpeedFolding?
A.It can perform more delicate actions.
B.It can help with all sorts of housework.
C.It can record the working speed accurately.
D.It can fold 3 to 6 pieces per hour on average.
12.What does the author think of SpeedFolding?
A.It is highly profitable. B.It is no better than the old.
C.It has a promising future. D.It will go out of style quickly.
13.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Robots Become More Intelligent
B.The Fastest Ever Folding Robot is Here
C.Robots Release People from Housework
D.The Research on the Folding Robot is On
An injured hiker was rescued earlier this month after a train passenger spotted her from the window. She was crazily waving on the other side of a river, having just spent two days trapped in the wilderness with a broken leg.
The rider told the train crew, who then reported it to the train inspector, Henry Smith, who was in a motor car behind them. Henry was able to stop and communicate with the woman on the opposite bank of the river, which was freezing cold and moving quickly.
The hiker, a woman in her twenties, had been missing for two days. She said she’d intended to go on a day hike, but ended up falling 90 feet down a cliff face while trying to take pictures. She reportedly told rescuers that she lost consciousness for an unknown amount of time. Despite a badly broken leg, she struggled to pull herself to the bank of the river to try to flag down trains. She had no emergency supplies with her, or suitable clothing to spend the night outdoors. There had been a cold attack while the woman was trapped in the wilderness. The hiker described spending daylight hours trying to get the attention of passing trains and, at night, would roll herself into a nearby cliff face in an attempt to stay warm.
Henry called to request help for search and rescue. The operator who received the emergency call said the hiker’s family had been looking for her. While they were waiting for the rescue team, Nick and Kylah, an engineer and a fireman on the next train passing by the location, came to help. 327 passengers on the train waited on the track as they crossed the river to examine the woman’s injuries and bring emergency supplies, blankets and a radio for communication. Eventually, a helicopter was sent to locate and rescue the hiker and she was transported safely to the hospital.

The Chinese manned submersible (潜水器) Fendouzhe, over 96.5 percent of whose core components have been independently developed by China, reached one of the deepest spots on the planet, a dizzying and dark depth of 10,909 meters.
Extreme water pressure is the first challenge that requires dealing with during the exploration. At 10,000 meters down in the ocean, the submersible has to stand about 1,100 atmospheres of pressure, equal to 2,000 elephants stepping on a person’s back. As the solid “armour (盔甲)”, the manned cabin is a safety guarantee for humans to reach down to 10,000 meters deep in the ocean. To overcome the technical bottleneck, the Chinese researchers developed a new material-Ti62A, successfully solving problems of the strength and toughness of the manned cabin.
To avoid risks of crashes in the dark deep sea with complex terrain (地形), Fendouzhe requires its control system, a smart “brain” to give the exact instructions. Researchers designed a neural network algorithm (神经网络算法), which enables Fendouzhe to travel automatically according to the seabed terrain and locate fixed points. Its control system has reached the international frontier level.
The submersible is equipped with two flexible and strong “arms”. Each 7-joint arm with 6 degrees-of-freedom control and a weight-carrying ability of more than 60 kilograms can cover the sampling basket and its front areas. With the arms, Fendouzhe collected samples of ocean rocks, deep-sea living things and seabed sediments (沉淀物).
The ocean, especially the deep sea, is widely regarded as Earth’s final frontier. Deep down in the ocean are unusual creatures, strange environments and impressive geological wonders, yet humanity knows less about the ocean floor than about the far side of the moon. These samples and data collected from the deep ocean can be used for geological and biological research, as well as study the human impact on the planet.
21.Why is “2000 elephants” mentioned in paragraph 2?

A.The toughness of the cabin. B.The ability of weight-carrying.
C.The method of data-collection. D.The technology of control system.
23.What can “arms” do according to paragraph 4?
A.Collect ocean samples. B.Land the submersible.
C.Provide safety guarantee. D.Prevent crashes intelligently.
24.Why do people research the deep ocean according to the last paragraph?
A.It is more complex than the moon.
B.It is seriously affected by humans.
C.To make sure of the depth of the ocean
D.To explore the less-known field of the planet.
Playing sports you enjoy can help you meet recommended activity levels. In a 2012 article, Dr. David Geier claimed playing sports was linked to reduced rates of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and other poor health conditions. A 2012 Melbourne University summary fact sheet claimed playing sports leads to the healthy growth of bones, muscles and connective tissue in children. It also suggested children who play sports tend to remain more physically active as adults and are less likely to smoke or use drugs.
The social benefits of playing sports last well beyond youth. Team sports offer adults of all ages an opportunity for social interaction. A 2009 study by Asztalos Metal, published in the “Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport” found playing sports reduced stress levels among adults while other forms of physical activity did not.
While your chances of ever making it to the professionals are slim, sports can still lead to career opportunities. You can become a coach or official, and with the right education and experience become part of the sports media. Playing sports could be your ticket to a cheaper education, too. The data-compiling website scholarshipstats.com reported that 177,000 student athletes had some or all of their education paid for in the 2021-22 academic year.
Of course, with any physical activity comes the risk of injury. but some sports are definitely more dangerous than others. In a 2011 survey, the non-profit Safe Kids Worldwide reported that over 1.35 million children sustained sports-related injuries bad enough for a trip to an emergency room. Some sports even carry the risk of potentially dangerous physical problems off the field. Most notable are the eating disorders that have developed among gymnasts and other athletes that need to cut weight for competition.

26.How can students get a cheaper education by playing sports?
A.They are paid to play sports. B.They can achieve scholarship.
C.They’ll be stronger to study better. D.They can graduate earlier.
27.How is the last paragraph different from the above paragraphs?
A.Telling a new advantage. B.Moving to a summary.
C.Writing in a different tone. D.Giving further explanation.
28.Who is the article intended for?
A.Officials. B.Sportsmen. C.Doctors. D.Kids.
The human brain is a complex organ. It stores everything we go through, from our life experiences to our skills, our preferences, all the things that form our personality and our existence are stored in our brains alone as memories. With age, this complex structure often begins to deteriorate. The memories become harder to recall, we start forgetting things and our brain functions become weaker and slower with each passing day.
Dementia and Alzheimer’s are mental disorders that can lead to many painful experiences. More so when you see your own friends or family members suffer from it. But there are some who do not let even such problems bring them down. Paul Harvey, an 81-year-old orchestra conductor, is one such person. Last September, Harvey’s son Nick recorded a video of his father playing one of his compositions on the piano and posted it on Twitter. He suffers from Dementia too and wanted to show the world tat even this mental disorder could not take music away from his father. The old man gained appreciation and love from millions of people on the internet.
Paul went against the diagnosis and proved that music truly does reach places even words or actions cannot. He put his music out in the world in the form of a single recorded by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. The funds raised by selling the records of this single will be going to the Alzheimer’s Society and Music for Dementia. The campaign is to make music available for free to patients who suffer from conditions like Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
To mark the day since his video went viral. he was also invited to conduct the BBC Philharmonic orchestra and given a chance to play two of his compositions at their studio, located in Salford. It is truly a heart-warming story.

A.Because Harvey’s disease can be dealt with in time.
B.Because Harvey is recovering from a terrible illness.
C.Because others can help Harvey get rid of his disease.
D.Because others can offer good opportunities to Harvey.
Known as Project Delta, the machine learning program takes into account thousands of variables and different calculations, and the things it would actually take a good team of organizers to manage. It ensures the food is going where it is needed most, where it’s most likely to get eaten, and many other things.
Many people describe food waste as “a good problem to have”, as it naturally suggests that there is enough to go around. The problem is that it’s not always going to where there are hungry people.
Producers and sellers alike try to make as much as they think they can find buyers for, while the final stage owner of food—restaurants, supermarkets, or hotels, often have too many things to worry about and consider how best to send food further down the line.
The excellent distribution (分发) of food is a challenging job to take on all the way down the supply chain. Perhaps this is the main reason that 30-40% of the food in the U. S. is wasted.
Adele Peters reports the Google innovation and shares that there is no simple way for food suppliers to let food banks know what they have available, or for food banks to communicate what they need.
Emily Ma explains that they set out to create a smarter food system. One that knows in what state the food is, its location, and where best to direct it to. This way, it ensures that it ends up to the people who need it most and not in a landfill.
Finally, in a more impressive display of machine learning, special cameras are equipped next to waste bins in Google-facility kitchens. They were able to collect twice as much information about food waste as the manual by-hand logs that were made by chefs, which took about 30-60 minutes to complete.
33.Why do many people think of food waste as “a good problem to have”?
A.Because it shows there’s enough food.

ESP, Extra Sensory Perception, is a catch-all expression for the so-called ability of certain people to receive transmitted thoughts from others, to transmit their own thoughts, to see what will happen in the future or to be able to move objects from one place to another without physically touching them. These special people are called psychics. Some believe that we all have this ability to some degree but that most of us choose not to develop it.
Many people are skeptical about ESP. Alongside the existence of documented evidence, there are plenty of claims that have turned out to be cheating. For most people, it is difficult to accept such claims without having had first-hand experience. The lack of scientific evidence is another factor to take into account. On the other hand, most of us have, at some time, experienced a seemingly unexplainable occurrence; hearing the telephone ring and knowing who will be on the other end of the line or cases of coincidence that seem to be too extreme to be accidental.
Over the years there have been numerous ESP experiments conducted by serious scientists in serious institutions. Joseph Banks Rhine, a botanist at Duke University published a famous book in 1934 called “Extra-Sensory Perception” in which he claimed to have enormous evidence of ESP. However, other scientists have been unable to copy his results since, which has resulted in the book losing much of its original credibility and fame.
The Ganzfield Experiments are considered to have been the most carefully examined ESP experiments. So-called psychics had their eyes covered and ears blocked while a “sender” attempted to transmit messages. Later the psychics would compare the messages received to the original messages sent out. There was a great deal of excitement and interest at the time, but the research failed to produce convincing results.
One of the strongest criticisms against ESP is that in order for it to exist, the fundamental laws of physics would necessarily have to be broken.
Human beings are attracted to the whole range of supernatural phenomena. ESP will always continue to fascinate. This becomes clear when we see how much of the media is dedicated to the topic: magazines, journals, web sites, television and radio programs. Some of the most successful films in recent years have fuelled interest among the younger generations who are starting to ask the same questions and to look for explanations for the same phenomena as their parents and grandparents before them. Who knows? One day we might just find these answers because one thing is certain: “The truth is out there! ”

Someday, shadows and light could team up to provide power. A new device uses the contrast(差异) between bright spots and shade to create an electric current. That current can power small electronics, such as a watch or LED lights.
Swee Ching Tan and his team call their new device a shadow-effect energy generator. They made it by coating silicon(硅) with a thin layer of gold. Silicon is often used in solar cells that produce electricity from sunlight.
As in a solar cell, light shining on this generator energizes electrons(电子)in the silicon. Those electrons then jump into the gold. The difference in light levels creates an electric current. Sending electrons makes a flow of current that can power small electronics.
Tan’s team described the new device in Energy &Environmental Science. Each device measures 4 cm long and 2 cm wide. That makes its area slightly larger than a stamp. In low light, eight generators power an electronic watch. These devices can also serve as self-powered motion sensors(传感器). For instance, when a toy car passed by, its shadow fell on a generator. That created enough electricity to light an LED.
The team compared its generators to commercial solar cells that are typically used under full sunlight. With half of each device in shadow, the generators produced roughly twice as much power per surface area as the solar cells. “But it would be better to compare them to solar cells meant to work in low light, such as the silicon solar cells in classroom calculators. These are designed to use indoor light,” said Emily Warren, a chemical engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Warren also would like to see the team measure the power the devices make over a longer time, such as a whole day.

TikTok has appeared as a major starter of food trends—from mushroom coffee and pancake cereal to cloud bread. But there’s another trend dominating TikTok that’s become bigger than any of these viral recipes. That’s the #whatieatinaday trend, which is nearing 9 billion views. These video food diaries are also popular on Instagram—typically featuring a wellness influencer or celebrity showing their foods they ate that day—often with a full-length yoga clothes mirror selfie.
The basic message these posts send is that if you eat like them, then you can eventually look like them. The posts are promoting the idea of a perfect or ideal day of eating, along with a perfect body size.
“Younger audience, especially girls and young women, accept the message that they must eat like these creators in order to achieve and maintain not only health, but also social attraction,” says Cara Harbstreet. “The biggest harm I see with this trend is that it normalizes disordered or restrictive eating behaviors. This could prevent someone struggling with an eating disorder from seeking and receiving support or treatment.”
Even if the #whatieatinaday posts are displaying a balanced day of eating, the message of “eat like me, and you will look like me” is harmful because people would not necessarily achieve the same body size as the Instagrammer even if they copied their day of eating bite for bite.
Rather than a day’s worth of food, many experts suggest posting a single meal instead. Rachael Hartley said an individual meal or recipe could serve as an idea or inspiration versus a full day of eating to copy.
“I occasionally share #whylate Wednesday posts, with the aim of showing a wide range of foods, including fast food, desserts, convenience foods and other foods that diet culture might dislike, as well as showing how to include nutrition in a gentle way,” she said.
Rachael says diet culture has changed our sense of how much is “normal” to eat at meals or snacks, so it can be helpful to see a full meal that shows a variety of foods.

Soot (煤) pollution is speeding up climate-driven melting in Antarctica, a new study suggests, raising questions about how to protect the delicate continent from the increasing number of humans who want to visit.
“It really makes us question, is our presence really needed?” says Alia Khan, one of the authors of the new study. “We have quite a large black carbon footprint in Antarctica, which is enhancing snow and ice melt.”
Black carbon is the leftover thing from burning plants or fossil fuels. Soot in Antarctica comes primarily from waste gases of cruise ships (游轮), vehicles and airplanes, although some pollution travels on the wind from other parts of the globe. The dark particles (微粒) coat white snow and absorb heat from the sun the way a black T-shirt does on a warm day. The blanket of dark bits speeds up melting that was already happening more quickly because of global warming.
When snow and ice are uncovered, they reflect an enormous amount of sunlight before it can turn into heat. “These are the mirrors on our planet,” says Sonia Nagorski, a scientist at the University of Alaska Southeast. “When those mirrors are covered in a film of dark bits, they don’t send back that much light and heat. That means more heat is trapped on Earth, speeding up melting and contributing to global warming.”
As a scientist who personally visits Antarctica every year, Khan says she is troubled by her own research results. On the one hand, she goes to Antarctica to collect crucial data about how quickly the snow and ice there are disappearing. “But then when we come to conclusions like this it really does make us think twice about how frequently we need to visit the continent,” she says, “and what kind of regulations should be placed on tourism as well.” That could mean requiring that cruise ships and vehicles be electric, for example, or limiting the number of visitors each year.
58.What is Khan’s attitude towards human actions in Antarctica according to paragraph 2?
A.Angry and abusive. B.Cold and uninterested.
C.Doubtful and anxious. D.Admiring and delighted.
59.What is the main cause of soot pollution in Antarctica?
A.The quick melting of ice and snow. B.The emission from virous transport.
C.The remaining parts of burning plants. D.The floating gases from other continents.
60.What do we know from Nagorski?
A.The covered ice is less reflective.
B.The melting speed of ice is slower than before.
C.The dark blanket serves as a big mirror.
D.The sunlight gets increasingly stronger recently.
61.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.What made our planet so polluted? B.Who is to blame for air pollution?
C.Can electric vehicles save tourism? D.Are we welcome to the South Pole?
My hands were shaking uncontrollably. I tried incredibly hard to focus on the words that I spent hours putting down on paper. I tried to conquer my fear of speaking in public on numerous occasions throughout my life. During college and at my first few jobs, I would get ridiculously nervous when I had to give a presentation or lead a meeting. Public speaking had been my nemesis for as long as I could remember.
Then in my mid-thirties, I decided to join the public speaking group Toastmasters. At every meeting, we were rated and forced to compete with other speakers for an award. You would think that I would walk away from these experiences as a polished speaker, but nothing seemed to work.
It wasn’t until recently, when science and scientific institutions were being attacked for unfair reasons during the pandemic, that I decided I must speak out. Science has made this country a place where dreams come true — this is why we all need to protect science. In addition, as a science writer, I try to get readers to understand how science is related to their daily lives.
So I ended up on that frightening stage on that sunny Saturday in April — Earth Day. Despite the body shakes and fear, I persevered. That day, I looked out into the crowd of like-minded science supporters and I felt comfort.
Reaching that milestone goal of getting through a speech truly changed me. At almost forty, I learned that passion can set off a flame in my heart to do things I never dreamed possible. The darkness that led to my speech is sure to lead to new opportunities and adventures.

A.Frustration can be a stepping stone to success.
B.Love motivates us to achieve the unachievable.
C.Science can lead us to make wonderful changes.
D.Any difficulty can be overcome with great effort.
During the pandemic, when going to the gym wasn’t a safe option, people began exploring virtual workouts (虚拟训练) from home. Many of them now say they won’t go back. It has helped many people.
Linda Munson, 56, has worked a desk jol from home since the shutdown. She’s never been much of a gym person. In 2021, she was hospitalized with COVID and diagnosed with diabetes (糖尿病). When her doctor told her she needed to focus more on her health, she said she couldn’t do it. The doctor said, “Well, we’ll wait for you to have a heart attack.” That was her wake-up call. She started walking.
One day, her son brought home a VR headset called an Oculus Quest. Munson discovered the popular fitness app Supernatural and was hooked. Supernatural lets you swing your arms at targets or stretch with a coach in front of you and in your ear while you’re listening to music.
Linda Munson exercises in her living room. She takes a deep breath after using Supernatural, saying many Supernatural users post selfies in a Facebook group after a workout and cheer for each other.
Currently, Supernatural membership offers hundreds of workouts and costs $179 per year. The Ocults Quest headset needed to access it is $299. A handful of other workout apps made for VR headsets are a bit cheaper. “It’s worth it,” Munson says. B.Her doctor forced her to use it.
C.She became interested in it by accident.
D.Her grandchildren wanted her to play with them.
69.What is Linda Munson’s attitude towards the app?
A.Negative. B.Approving.
C.Doubtful. D.Disappointed.
Are you planning to eat out tonight or are you going to stay in to save the pennies(省钱)? A meal out at a good restaurant or even a pizzeria can cost you a small fortune, so cooking for yourself makes financial sense. But with the rise in food prices, it’s important to be a wise shopper to keep your food bill in check.
These days our supermarket shelves are packed with tempting food items, from the daily staples, like bread and milk, to the exotic, like mangoes and kiwifruits(猕猴桃). There’s also the option of buying ready meals -convenient food that comes at a price. However, if you’re feeling hard up(拮据), there are things you can do to make the money you spend on food go further.
According to the BBC Food website, it’s all about changing your habits. It claims that cooking fulfilling and tasty meals on a budget is easy. It suggests a number of “tricks” such as using cheaper cuts of meat, “choose small amounts of meat with less expensive proteins” and “transform small quantities of leftovers into a heavy meal”.
A favorite entertainment of mine to help when money is tight is to stock up on items that are on special offer-such as BOGOF deals(Buy one, get one free). However, this is more of a problem when it comes to perishable(易腐烂的)items like fresh fruit and vegetables. In the UK, about 39% of household food waste is fruit and veg. So it’s a good idea not to stock up on too much of these things. Store them carefully and make the most of them in all your recipes.
Food waste is a big problem generally, so shopping carefully can also reduce the amount we throw away. And in Edinburgh in Scotland, it’s possible to reduce waste and not break the bank by visiting a recycled food shop, which has been set up to prevent extra food from shops ending up in the bins(垃圾桶).
Of course, the biggest thing you can do to help your cash flow is to cut back on take-away coffees and lunches.
Cooking your own meals is usually healthier for you and your finances.
70.According to the author, which of the following ways cost the least money?
A.To have meals at a good restaurant. B.To cook meals for yourself at home.
C.To buy exotic fruit and vegetables. D.To buy ready meals or convenient food.
71.What does the author usually do to save the expenses on food?
A.He chooses small amounts of meat with expensive proteins.
B.He transforms large quantities of leftovers into a heavy meal.
C.He stocks up on items of special offer -such as BOGOF deals.
D.He makes all the perishable fruit and vegetables in all his recipes. .
72.How do some people reduce food waste in the UK?
A.They often visits recycled food shops.
B.They store most of their food carefully.
C.They buy take﹣away coffees and lunches.
D.They only throw away the perishable food.
73.Which one can be the best title of this passage?
A.Ways to Cook Tasty Meals at Home B.Ways to Cut Daily Expenses on Meals
C.Ways to Buy Food in the Supermarket D.Ways to Store Fresh Fruit and Vegetables.
Robbie Gay is a young boy with a kind heart. He had a horrible start to life, hospitalized twice with brain injuries before entering the foster(寄养) care system. When he was finally adopted by his parents, he was so hurt by his experiences that he was unable to cry.
However, he found therapy(治疗)in a most unlikely place—his local animal shelter. There he took comfort in caring for the older dogs who’d been left behind. “People don’t want older dogs. They only want puppies, “Robbie explained. His ability to empathize(移情)with the older dogs obviously comes from his own shocking experience, as his mom shared, “He knows what it’s like not to be loved and cared for.”
Now in a safe and loving home, he’s able to open his heart completely to these unfortunate dogs and practice compassion. It was this kindness that led him to find his tears again when one of his foster dogs died.
One of the difficulties in caring for the older dogs is that many don’t stay alive for long. But Robbie insists on staying with them right up until they pass away, as he quite rightly says, “I don’t think of when they’re going, I think of how they feel right now.”
Robbie is unusual in that he not only wants to care for aging dogs, he also hopes to foster children when he grows up. He truly shows compassion and understanding, even if it leaves him heartbroken when his four-legged friends depart too soon. Hopefully, Robbie will continue to care for others, through his beautiful heart, continue to heal and feel loved with his wonderful furry family and the human one!
74.What made Robbie care for older dogs in his local animal shelter?

根据第二段“Does she think and act like a foreigner? What do we mean by this label?(她的思维和行为像外国人吗?这个标签是什么意思)”可知,本段举例欧洲人和北京人分别在国外定居,生活,工作之后他们的特征更像本地人,然后通过问句的形式表明再根据一个人的出生地来判断他是一个外国人是不合适的了,选项A符合句意,故选A。
2.推理判断题。根据第三段“When I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, the faces you would see during a walk through a local shopping mall back in the 1960s and 1970s included almost none of Asian descent. Today the same malls are full of Asian faces, and a glance at the ranks of top scoring students in local schools reveals lots of Asian surnames.(当我在芝加哥郊区长大时,在上世纪六七十年代,你在当地的购物中心散步时看到的面孔几乎没有亚裔。今天,同样的商场里到处都是亚洲面孔,看一眼当地学校的高分学生排名,就会发现很多亚洲姓氏)”可知,通过六七十年代和现在的状况相比较可知,今天在芝加哥的亚洲移民比以前时要多很多,选项C符合语意。故选C。
3.细节理解题。根据第五段“In most places, the traditional foreigners were people who didn’t speak or read the local languages well, were unfamiliar with local customs and lifestyles, often engaged in relatively third-class work, and certainly not the type of people you would want your sons or daughters to marry(在大多数地方,传统的外国人是那些不会说或读当地语言的人,不熟悉当地的习俗和生活方式,通常从事相对三流的工作,当然不是你想让你的儿子或女儿嫁给的那种人)”可知,传统外国人的特点是:不精通当地语言;不熟悉当地的习俗和生活方式;做低等工作,因此生活水准不会很高;在婚恋上不受欢迎,因此很难娶到或嫁给当地人。选项D. Most of them didn’t live at the bottom of the local society.(他们大部分人不生活在社会底层)与文章内容不符,不是传统外国人的特点。故选D。
根据第一段“One side effect of globalization and the related phenomenon of greatly increased mobility is that the traditional definition of “foreigner” has passed its sell-by date(全球化和相关的流动性大大增加的现象的一个副作用是……)” 结合最后一段“The traditional role models are getting mixed up, and it looks like this is just the beginning of a new chapter. Today, the whole thing has totally changed. It’s not about where people are from or what color their skins are.(传统的角色模式正在被混淆,看起来这只是一个新篇章的开始。今天,一切都完全改变了。这与人们来自哪里或他们的皮肤是什么颜色无关)”可知,在全球化的今天,外国人不再与来自哪里或与肤色有关,即对外国人的定义完全改变了。与第一段主旨首尾呼应。因此可以推断出,换线句子的含义是指“对外国人传统的定义已经过时了”,即已经完全改变。选项A. the term “foreigner” should be redefined(外国人这一概念应该重新被定义)符合语意。故选A。
根据第一段“One side effect of globalization and the related phenomenon of greatly increased mobility is that the traditional definition of “foreigner” has passed its sell-by date(全球化和相关的流动性大大增加的现象的一个副作用是对外国人的传统定义已经过时)”可知,文章开篇提出,全球化之后,对外国人的定义的影响,下文会对这这一现象解释说明。结合最后一段“The traditional role models are getting mixed up, and it looks like this is just the beginning of a new chapter. Today, the whole thing has totally changed. It’s not about where people are from or what color their skins are.(传统的角色模式正在被混淆,看起来这只是一个新篇章的开始。今天,一切都完全改变了。这与人们来自哪里或他们的皮肤是什么颜色无关)”可知,在全球化的今天,外国人不再与来自哪里或与肤色有关,即对外国人的定义完全改变了。首尾段的主旨相呼应。因此文章的大意是“定义外国人这一标准已经完全改变”,选项B符合语意。故选B。

6.词义猜测题。根据文章第二段“According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. (根据国际应用心理学协会的说法,更低的压力,更好的情绪,更好的大脑活动,甚至快乐都可以与花时间在户外有关。)”以及划线单词所在句子的主谓部分“That’s why(这是……的原因)”可知,前一句中所说的减轻压力与在户外有关系,与后一句有因果关系,因为自然疗法对身体有好处,因此很多项目才会建议把自然作为潜在的治疗方法。A.practice练习;B.provide提供;C.suggest建议;D.explore探讨。故选C项。
根据文章第一段“Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. I couldn’t believe that those trees can have a healing(治愈的)effect on people. (科学家估计地球上有数百万棵树。我不敢相信这些树能对人有治疗作用。)”引出话题。第二段“According to World Health Organization, 40 percent of American adults have at least two chronic(慢性病的)diseases, which include high blood pressure, mood disorders, heart problems and diabetes. According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. That’s why there are dozens of programs that prescribe nature as a potential form of healing. Nature is everywhere.
根据文章第三段“The first one is called attention restoration theory. (第一个是注意力恢复理论。)”以及“The second major theory is called stress reduction theory. (第二个主要理论叫做压力减少理论。)”可知,大自然疗法主要采取的方式是减少压力,是人体基本认知恢复。A项“Refresh oneself.(清醒头脑)”符合题意,故选A项。
根据文章第四段“When I recommended nature for the first time to a patient of mine, he actually just nodded his head and said, “You’re absolutely right. When I spend more time in nature, I feel better.” And so, I think healthcare providers have to get over our own traditional mental views against this new sort of lifestyle, and prescribe something evidence-based, like nature time more often.

In sum, most robots have not generally been equipped for the task. 故选A。
根据第四自然段“That process can involve a number of defined movements including dragging, moving and “pick-and-place”. (该过程可能涉及许多定义的移动,包括拖动、移动和“拾取和放置”。)”可知,SpeedFolding可以执行更精细的动作。故选A。
根据最后一段“For another, researchers say there’s more they want to explore, including methods with which the robot can learn to work on a novel piece of clothing when given a few demonstrations. But there’s always hope that folding in the future will get even neater. (另一方面,研究人员表示,他们还想探索更多的方法,包括机器人在进行几次演示后可以学习如何处理一件新衣服的方法。但人们总是希望未来的折叠会变得更整洁。)”可知,作者认为SpeedFolding有一个充满希望的未来。故选C。
13.主旨大意题。根据第二自然段“But an international group of researchers say their new method could change that, or at least speed up the process. (但一个国际研究小组表示,他们的新方法可以改变这一情况,或者至少可以加快这一进程。)”以及最后一段“For another, researchers say there’s more they want to explore, including methods with which the robot can learn to work on a novel piece of clothing when given a few demonstrations. (另一方面,研究人员表示,他们还想探索更多的方法,包括机器人在进行几次演示后可以学习如何处理一件新衣服的方法。)”可知,本文主要介绍了一种自动化快速折叠衣服的方法以及折叠机器人的前景。故D项“The Research on the Folding Robot is On (折叠机器人的研究进展)”最能概括文章主旨。故选D。
