Making and retaining deep, meaningful friendships as an adult is hard, especially for men. Less than half of men report being satisfied with their friendships, and only about 1 in 5 said they had received emotional support from a friend in the last week, compared with 4 in 10 women, according to a 2021 survey from the Survey Center on American Life.
Why is it so hard? When Dr. Frank Sileo, a psychologist based in Ridgewood, New Jersey, first began conducting research on male friendships in 1995, many participants assumed his survey was about homosexuality. Such stereotypes are inaccurate, but revealed some of what maybe holding some men back from deep friendships, Sileo said.
Besides, boys receive messages that growing up and “manning up” mean hiding their soft side--a mindset that neuroscience, social science and developmental psychology all show is harmful to them. The drive to toughen up and never show vulnerability (脆弱) that restricts men from friendships can lead them to loneliness, violence and anger. “We consider relationships as feminine.” Sileo said. “If that’s a feminine (女性特有的) thing, it becomes a weakness or inability if men admit to needing friendships. ”
Thus, men seeking closeness might turn to those they see as better at building relationships and feel comfortable exploring their vulnerability with: the women in their lives and their romantic partners, according to Sileo’s research. It may seem like a good solution, but putting everything on a romantic partner can strain a relationship, whether it is going to a female partner exclusively for emotional support or depending on her to cultivate friendships and get-together for holidays and weekends. It is crucial to have multiple people to go to for support for different perspectives. “Men need to know it’s not just a woman thing.” she said. “They need to know that men can do it, too. ”
We live in a culture that clashes with our nature. If we raise children to go against their nature, we shouldn’t be surprised if some of those children grow up to struggle. Research has shown expression of negative emotions improved men’s emotional well-being, increased feelings of being understood and resulted in less reported loneliness. So just as many men make a great effort to eat right, exercise, succeed in their careers and raise children, men should prioritize developing friendships as well.

Like the move from horse-drawn carriages to vehicles powered by internal-combustion engines, the change from cars powered by fossil fuels to electric vehicles (EVs) will have a profound effect on personal transport. The Epidemic worldwide caused a 20% drop in global light vehicle sales in 2020, to about 70m, but they pick up in 2021. And the proportion of vehicles powered by batteries will grow quickly.
The increasing share price of Tesla, provides a big motivation for newcomers to catch up. Tesla may lead in battery technology and software, but to make those advantages stick, it must prove that “production hell” is behind it. Scaling up manufacturing has caused Tesla its biggest headaches.
Big name carmakers face an equally discouraging challenge: learning how to write software. Electric cars require integrated software, not just to ensure that batteries and motors work together to provide the best performance, but to connect the car to the outside world.
And what of the Tesla followers, from China’s Li, Nio and Xpeng to American firms such as Fisker, Lucid and Nikola? Cash from excitable investors has poured in and it is the same with big name carmakers — as are tech giants, keen to get involved as transport goes digital. Can the followers persuade investors that they have patent technology that will give them a long-term advantage?
Eye-catching Advertisements of vehicles are one thing, but as the industry’s trouble shows, working out how to make cars at scale, when softwares are as important as brakes and bodywork, is quite another. The coming year will make clearer which of Tesla’s competitors, new and old, can stay in race.
8.Which word best describes the trend of electric cars industry?
A.Disappointing. B.Promising.
C.Uncertain. D.Challenging.
9.Why is Tesla in trouble?
A.Its advertising is considered to be exaggerating.
B.It has to compete with many capable newcomers.
C.Its production capacity has become a bottleneck.
D.It may lose its advantage in software writing.
10.Which statement about Tesla’s competitors is TRUE?
A.They are mostly well-established companies.
B.Their share prices are catching up with those of Tesla.
C.Their problem lies in improving brakes and bodywork.
D.They are all receiving money from eager investors.
11.Which is the best title of the passage?
A.The Battle Within the EV Industry
B.New EV Companies Are Catching up
C.Electric Cars—Your Future Choice
D.Production Capacity—a Headache of EV Industry
Sancho Pancho owner Daria has turned her apartment into a small family business operation that makes unprocessed food waste from restaurants and markets into delicious and nutritional dog treats. When she started 2 years ago in 2020, it was the first of its kind in Portugal.
She was making dog biscuits out of leftovers and sold them in Santos Collective, a weekly farmer’s market in central Lisbon. At the same time, restaurant owner and friend Édson had opened a restaurant and was challenged with using up the fish he bought. This sparked (引发) the idea of using fish wastes for making dog treats and started a new business to deal with food waste.
On average 30% to 40% of the fish that Édson buys for his restaurant cannot be used. However, they are perfect for animals. Using cooking equipment, Daria can make fish parts into mouth-watering dog snacks. “From collected materials we are making dog biscuits, dried meat, skin fish chews and even fish oil,” states Daria. “All the products are 100% natural and made by hand. From being just a hobby ‘Sancho Pancho Shop’ has become a functioning business.”
Daria collects around 20kg of fish waste every week from Peixaria Veloso and around 50kg every month from Talho Naco and Intercoelho. These businesses are thrilled (激动) as Daria can take the waste off their hands.
Sancho Pancho’s influence doesn’t just stop at their food waste collection. Customers have also been inspired to do their bit by collecting leftovers from local markets to make food for their pets. Everyone can play a role in creating a future that tends to reuse and repurpose precious resources, rather than wasting them.
Sancho Pancho has caught the attention of French supermarket chain Auchan. They have asked Sancho Pancho if their food waste can be processed to be dog treats for their stores.

Fraser Doherty was only 14 when he started making jam(果酱).There had always been a special way of making jam in the Doherty family. One day his grandmother told Fraser the secret and, with her help, he began to invent his own unusual jam, all called SuperJam.
The jam was good because soon Fraser was making it and selling it to his friends and neighbors after school. Within four years he produced 1,000 tins of jam a week from his parents’ home in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2007, when he was just 17, he won an order to produce 120,000 tins of jam a week for a big British supermarket(超市).That meant that he needed to start producing jam in a factory, not at home.
When Fraser was 18 he studied business at Strathclyde University in Glasgow. He hoped that his business would grow and if it did, he could sell jam to other supermarkets. Things went really well. At the age of 24 he was already a millionaire(百万富翁). Today he sells jam to over 2,000 supermarkets around the world, from Australia to Russia!
Traditional jam contains often 80 percent sugar, but Mr. Doherty, whose company is called SuperJam, has created a healthy choice. He uses only fruit and fruit juice, not sugar. He wanted to make jam as healthy as possible, and take the place of the traditionally unhealthy jam with a “super jam”. “It was quite surprising to change a product that people have made the same way for hundreds of years, but I wanted to add a new way.” A food researcher said, “Fraser has taken an old product and he has made it young, exciting and modern.”

When my son finally started school around the age of four, I felt as though I’d been promoted to the new position of School Parent. It was an unexpectedly challenging role, one without additional benefits, or a raise for that matter.
As a direct result of starting school, there was the surprisingly unpleasant changes to our schedule. As parents, we were ill-prepared for the troubled time we had trying to get used to the practice of school.
Gone were the carefree days without plans and plenty of time to kill. This included playing imaginary games indoors or hanging around outside whenever the weather turned nice. Getting to school on time meant becoming the ‘hot mess’ mum often seen in movies. I was rushing kids out the door, forgetting lunch boxes and losing car keys.
As a huge morning person, I tried my best to ensure that school mornings remained calm and slow-paced. I prepared as much as possible the night before. But it still felt like we were in a rush, which I really hated.
The trick, I later discovered, was to cover up my feeling of anxiety. I chanted to myself “Do not rush him, no one likes to be rushed” while helping him get through his morning routine and tasks in a timely manner. Whatever frustration (沮丧) I felt about how slow he was moving, I wouldn’t let him know it. I even didn’t allow anyone in our house to say phrases like, “Hurry up, we’re going to be late!” Our common goal, was not just to get our son out the door in time for school, but more importantly prove that mornings can be relaxed and enjoyable, rather than a horrible start to the day.
Of course by the time summer holiday came, our family had grown wise enough. In what felt like the ‘longest shortest time’, we went from anxious and confused, to calm and confident once again. We were far more prepared to have a smoother start to the new school year.
35.What do we know about the author from the first paragraph?
A.She liked her new position. B.She got a promotion at work.

A.She sang a song. B.She pushed him hard.
C.She hid her feelings. D.She complained a lot.
38.What is the text mainly about?
A.Growth of kids. B.Experience as a school parent.
C.New life in school. D.Advice on lifestyle change.
My name is Michelle Rogers. For most of my life I had been fighting with my body weight. I was either gaining weight or trying to lose it. I wasn’t happy with myself, and I certainly wasn’t able to fully enjoy life. Not only did I feel bad physically, but I felt terrible emotionally. I also knew I wasn’t able to be the best I could be, and with failure after failure in losing weight, I just felt so hopeless to make it.
One day in 2008, I was looking through ads online and saw a treadmill (跑步机) for $100. This time I decided to start small and keep it doable. The first week I started walking 15 minutes on the treadmill at a fixed time every day. The next week I did 16 minutes. Each week I added a minute. Gradually, I increased speed as well as time. Once I got to 30 minutes, the weight started dropping off.
I didn’t lose weight at first, but I didn’t give up like I did in the past. I realized I started feeling better. My legs were getting stronger. I didn’t feel painful like I used to when I got up from my desk. All the efforts I’d been putting into fitness made me want to start eating healthier, too. I began with small changes as well. After these years I started listening to my body. It was refusing food and habits that were bad for me.
Today, the extra weight is gone. I still exercise every morning. I look and feel the best I have never done. Every area of my life has improved and benefited from this change in me. Not only do I have my youthful energy, looks and health back, but also I have more confidence than I have ever had.
39.How did Michelle feel about losing weight before 2008?
A.Confident. B.Hopeless. C.Addicted. D.Annoyed.
40.How many weeks had passed before Michelle’s weight began dropping?
A.15 weeks. B.20 weeks. C.25 weeks. D.30 weeks.
41.What is NOT my practice now?
A.Doing exercise regularly. B.Eating healthier.
C.Refusing bad food and habits. D.Gaining extra weight.
42.What can we learn from Michelle’s story?
A.Time is everything.
B.Interest is the best teacher.
C.Start with small things.
D.Nothing is more important than confidence.
What you do after studying could have a big effect (影响) on how well you learn and remember. Today on Education Tips, we will explore two no-cost ways that can help you improve your learning: wakeful rest and sleep.
When many students finish studying, they often go straight to another activity. Perhaps they look at their phone or computer. They might even play a video game or watch television. But research suggests that resting after your study may help you remember what you have studied.
The basic idea is this: by stopping your activity after the study, your brain gets a chance to rest. Resting is difficult when you are playing computer games.
While this might sound unusual to you, many studies have explored the benefits (好处) of resting after learning — what is called “wakeful rest”.
A 2019 study found that both young and older adults were able to better remember information they learned after doing wakeful rest.
If you want to give “wakeful rest” a try, here are a few simple things to do. Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not look at your phone, read stories or play games. It is really that easy!
Besides wakeful rest, sleep is also important for learning. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) notes that sleep helps people to learn in two ways. A report on the school’s website explains that “a sleep-deprived (剥夺) person cannot focus attention well and therefore cannot learn well” . It also says, “Sleep itself helps us to memorize and that memorizing is very important for learning new information.”
The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) suggests that adults between the ages of 20 and 64 get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per day. Teenagers may need a little bit more, and people over the age of 65 may need a little less.
Try to get some “wakeful rest” after a study. Then try to get a good night’s sleep. That’s it — a simple, no-cost way to help you remember what you learn.
43.According to the research, shortly after studying students are recommended ________
A.To read a newspaper. B.To play a video game.
C.To have a nice sleep at night. D.To take a wakeful rest.
44.How long should teenagers sleep each day according to NSF?

C.No more than 8 hours. D.Just 7 hours.
45.What’s the organization of this passage?

A China-led research team has completed a genetic study on penguin species to understand how they evolved from their flying ancestors 60 million years ago into the excellent swimmers today.
The study analyzed the genes of all living penguins and those that had died out, alongside their fossil data. The research provides new findings about the genetic basis for penguin evolution and its adaptation to the environments in oceans.
The study confirmed that ancient penguins originated in Zealandia, which used to be a continent in the South Pacific Ocean, about 65 million years ago. The ancestor of penguins appeared about 14 million years ago, after which global climate changes drove the penguin volution and contributed to the formation of new species, said lead researcher Zhang Guojie from Kunming Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
It also identified a series of genes that allow the bird to live both on land and in water. Over 60 million years, penguins have gradually become smaller in size, and they have evolved to be more suitable for the new environments, according to Zhang.
Researchers in the study also discovered that penguins at high latitudes (纬度), such as emperor penguins, had evolved much faster than those at low latitudes. It suggests that the extreme Antarctic environment put greater environmental stress on penguins and sped up the adaptation of the high-latitude species to extreme environments.
These findings help to understand which genes contributed to the penguin adaptations to oceans and extreme cold environments on Earth, Zhang said.
“They also demonstrated that penguins have adapted to an ever-changing world during the past 60 million years, so there is no need to worry about how the species respond to future climate changes.”
54.What do we know about the ancestors of penguins?
A.They evolved because of climate changes.
B.They disappeared about 14 million years ago.
C.They were smaller in size than penguins today.
D.They were excellent swimmers 65 million years ago.
55.What is the main reason for penguins at high latitudes to evolve faster?
A.The small size of penguins.
B.The extreme cold environments.
C.The stress from other species.
D.The ever-changing environment.
56.What is the researchers’ attitude towards the penguins in the future?
A.Negative. B.Doubtful. C.Uncaring. D.Optimistic.
57.What did the research focus on?
A.How climate changes made penguins learn to fly.
B.How penguins evolved to adapt to new environment.
C.How human activities influenced penguins’ evolution.
D.How penguins began to live in water 14 million years ago.
Abbey Ahern, 34, who lives in Oklahoma, was shocked and heartbroken when she was told at her 19-week scan that her daughter had the incurable illness anencephaly (无脑畸形) which meant she would not live beyond a few hours. It ripped her heart out.
According to the National Institutes of Health, the illness means the baby has an underdeveloped brain and incomplete skull (颅骨). Approximately one in 10,000 babies in the US are born with anencephaly, most of which result in early death.
As a result, Abbey and her pilot husband Robert, also 34, decided to have a live birth so that they could spend time with their daughter and donate her organs — making Annie the first newborn baby donor in the state.
Afterwards they asked the doctor for the gender of their unborn child and decided to name her on the spot. They named her easily: Annie, which means, “grace”. Abbey said: “Carrying a seriously-ill baby to term was by far the most difficult thing I have ever done…For us, even in the middle of our terrible heartbreak we were able to see so much beauty.” The family spent just 14 hours and 58 minutes with Annie before she passed away.
Her organs were not available for transplant (移植) because her oxygen levels were too low — which Abbey said was “disappointing”— but they were able to donate her heart valves (瓣膜) and some of her organs could be used for research. She said: “Annie’s story is one of hope. I think it shows people that in the middle of tragedy, there can be beauty.”
58.How did Abbey feel at the news about her daughter firstly?
A.Surprised and upset. B.Worried and determined.
C.Relieved and regretful. D.Curious and angry.
59.What was Abbey and her husband’s decision?
A.Keeping Annie in hospital. B.Stopping giving birth to Annie.
C.Giving away Annie’s organs. D.Naming her daughter after beauty.
60.Why were Annie’s organs not used for transplant?
A.Because of diseases. B.Because of low temperature.
C.Because of heart valves. D.Because of lack of oxygen.
61.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To call on people to donate organs. B.To share a touching story with readers.
C.To inform people of what anencephaly is. D.To show what a tragedy the story is.

The Printing Press
What do you think is the most important invention in the last 1, 000 years? It is the lightbulb or the Internet? Many people say that it is the printing press, a machine that allows us to print copies or books and documents. But why is the printing press so important?
Before the printing press, books were copied by hand. Ancient Roman book publisher sometimes sold as many as 5, 000 copies of a book that had been copied by slaves. But copying a book took so much time and was so expensive that often only a few copies of each book were made. As a result, usually only a small percentage of the population learned to read and owned books.
In 1450, a goldsmith named Johannes Gutenberg in Germany invented the modem printing press. The impact of his machine is sometimes compared to the invention of the Internet. Although ancient Chinese people invented paper in 105 AD and used woodblock printing before 200 AD, Gutenberg’s printing press was easy to use with languages that had alphabetic scripts. After 1450, thousands of copies of a popular book or newspaper could be made quickly and cheaply. Books and newspapers with ideas and images from all over the world went into the market for the wide public.
Knowledge is power. Reading has brought about amazing changes in science, technology and politics. We have learned how to create wealth and even travel to far-away worlds. The computer, cellphone, and Internet have grown, because billions of powerful readers were created by the printing press.
From 1450 on, more and more people have become readers. These billions of readers are powerful, and they help the world to make progress at a fast speed.

根据第一段“It was an unexpectedly challenging role, one without additional benefits, or a raise for that matter.”(这是一个出乎意料的具有挑战性的角色,没有额外的福利,也没有加薪。)
根据第三段“I was rushing kids out the door, forgetting lunch boxes and losing car keys.”(我赶着孩子们出门,忘带饭盒,丢了车钥匙。)可知,作者为了让孩子按时到校,经常手忙脚乱,丢三落四,比较混乱,所以划线词所在句“Getting to school on time meant becoming the ‘hot mess’ mum often seen in movies”(准时上学意味着成为电影中经常出现的“hot mess”妈妈)中划线词意为:一团糟、杂乱无章的。故选A。
根据第五段“Whatever frustration (沮丧) I felt about how slow he was moving, I wouldn’t let him know it. ”(不管我对他的慢动作有多沮丧,我都不会让他知道。)可知,当儿子在上学的早上动作缓慢时,作者会隐藏自己的情绪,不让他知道。故选C。
38.主旨大意题。根据第一段“When my son finally started school around the age of four, I felt as though I’d been promoted to the new position of School Parent.”(当我的儿子终于在四岁左右开始上学时,我觉得自己好像被提升到了“学校家长”的新职位。)

根据第二段中“The first week I started walking 15 minutes on the treadmill at a fixed time every day. The next week I did 16 minutes. Each week I added a minute. Gradually, I increased speed as well as time. Once I got to 30 minutes, the weight started dropping off.(第一周,我开始每天在固定的时间在跑步机上步行15分钟。第二周我跑了16分钟。每周我都会增加一分钟。渐渐地,我增加了速度和时间。当我坚持了30分钟,体重开始下降)”可知,作者第一周跑15分钟,以后每周增加一分钟,在跑30分钟时,体重开始下降,由此可计算出,30-15=15,即作者花了15周体重才开始下降,故选A。
41.推理判断题。根据第三段中“All the efforts I’d been putting into fitness made me want to start eating healthier, too...It was refusing food and habits that were bad for me.(我在健身上付出的所有努力让我也想开始吃得更健康……拒绝对我不好的食物和习惯)”和最后一段中“Today, the extra weight is gone. I still exercise every morning. I look and feel the best I have never done. (今天,多余的体重消失了。我仍然每天早上锻炼。我看起来和感觉起来都最好,这是我以前从来没有过的)”可知,作者如今减肥成功,没有了多余的体重,看起来和感觉起来都最好。由此推知,他会继续保持,坚持锻炼,健康饮食,拒绝不好的习惯和饮食。D项“增加额外的体重”不是他现在的做法。故选D。
42.推理判断题。根据第三段“I didn’t lose weight at first, but I didn’t give up like I did in the past. I realized I started feeling better. My legs were getting stronger. I didn’t feel painful like I used to when I got up from my desk. All the efforts I’d been putting into fitness made me want to start eating healthier, too. I began with small changes as well. After these years I started listening to my body. It was refusing food and habits that were bad for me.(一开始我没有减肥成功,但是我没有像过去那样放弃。

根据第七段“Besides wakeful rest, sleep is also important for learning. 根据第八段“The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) suggests that adults between the ages of 20 and 64 get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per day. Teenagers may need a little bit more, and people over the age of 65 may need a little less. 根据最后一段“Try to get some “wakeful rest” after a study. Then try to get a good night’s sleep. That’s it —a simple, no-cost way to help you remember what you learn.
