Radajere Oleita thinks she may have a partial solution for the world’s two persistent problems: garbage and poverty. It’s called the Chip Bag Project. The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers:Rather than toss your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless.
Chip eaters drop off their empty bags from Doritos, Lay’s, and other favorites at two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store, where Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them. After they clean the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use padding and liners(内衬)from old coats to line the insides.
It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag, and each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags, depending on whether they’re single-serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterproof lightweight, and easy to carry around,” Oleita told the Detroit News.
Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800, 000 chip bags and, as of last December, created 110 sleeping bags.
Sure, it would be simpler to raise the money to buy new sleeping bags. But that’s only half the goal for the volunteers and Oleita whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago with the hope of attaining a better life. “We are dedicated to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally.” she says.
And, of course, there’s the symbolism of saving bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them to help the homeless. It’s a powerful reminder that environmental injustice and poverty often go hand in hand, as Oleita told hourdetroit. com:“I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues. ”

Every March, the US celebrates the accomplishments of women in American history. Even though these accomplishments go back a long way, most schools didn’t start focusing on women pioneers and their achievements until recently. Today, most colleges offer classes in women’s history and most schools teach kids about the many contributions women have made to the country. How did this change come about?
On March 19, 1911, a German woman named Clara Zetkin organized the very first International Women’s Day. Inspired by American working women, the annual event took on the causes of peace to end World War I as well as gain women’s rights. Over the years, interest in International Women’s Day decreased. It gained development again in the 1960s? when the women’s movement caused women to wonder why they weren’t included in the history books. By the 1970s, more female historians began to look back at the contributions of women in history. In 1978, a California school district started Women’s History Week to promote the teaching of women’s history. School officials picked the week of March 8 to include International Women’s Day. It was so popular that, in 1981, Congress passed a resolution making the week a celebration for the entire country. The concept of studying women’s history continued to grow in popularity. In 1987, a group of women, supported by people working in museums, schools and libraries, asked Congress to expand the celebration. That same year, Congress declared the entire month of March National Women’s History Month.
Today, schools and communities across the country celebrate the month with special lessons and activities designed to teach the ways women have helped shape the US. The women who have worked hard to make Women’s History Month a reality would like to see women’s history studied all year, not just every March. In 1996, the National Women’s History Museum was founded. It is a non-profit organization devoted to preserving and celebrating the various historic contributions of women. What Elon Musk has built on the remote mudflats (泥滩)at the southern tip of Texas is astonishing: huge metal structures, fuel storage tanks? and a silver rocket-all fronted by neon letters that spell out “Starbase”.
But can SpaceX coexist with the original feathered inhabitants on the lower Gulf coast? Environmentalists from Brownsville to Washington, D.C.are protesting his ambitious vision to build, test and launch next-generation rockets in this fragile ecosystem.
“It’s 24/7. The lights are really bright out here at night. I wouldn’t want to be nesting near any of this if I were a bird, “says Stephanie Bilodeau, a conservation bird biologist with a nonprofit program. “It doesn’t look like much, these vast mudflats she says, scanning the wetland, “but it’s undeniably important for shorebirds. The best habitat is right here.”
Less than 100 yards behind her, a massive heavy-lift crane(吊车) is preparing the site for the next test launch. When Musk broke ground here in 2014, the fact that he was sandwiched between the Lower Rio Grande National Wildlife Refuge and a group of local residents didn’t cause alarm. Now it does.
His original plans were to test and launch the slimmer Falcon 9 rocket a dozen times a year to launch satellites into orbit. But his plans have expanded--not surprising for Musk, who also owns the electric car company, Tesla. Today, he’s using this limited area of land to build and test his Super Heavy-Starship model. “Anytime you have progress, there’s nothing that doesn’t come with some downside/5 Musk told the local official.
In April, NASA awarded SpaceX a $2.9 billion contract to build a Starship to take astronauts to the moon, though the contract has since been put on hold due to environmental concerns. SpaceX activities are partly supervised by Cameron County in Texas. Freshmen anywhere may be nervous about university life. Here, three pieces of advice are for them.
Listen but don’t be silent
The world is held in students’ hands via smart phones. Thus, they may consider lecture listening less important.____24____It forces students to face the difficulties of training a deep attentiveness (注意). Unsurprisingly, students find it hard to speak out, ask questions or for points of clarification. They don’t want to appear foolish or incapable. However, there is no such thing as a foolish question.
Teachers are there to help you understand. This also goes for seminars and workshops. ____25____
Read and buy books
____26____ There’re so many useful online sources today, but the habit of reading books, especially whole books, is something being lost. Buy your own books. There are many bargains to be found on used-book websites or through Amazon. Being a book lover and buyer will help any student get the most out of their education.
____27____
As a student, you don’t just have to learn to listen and become an active reader: you also have to become an academic (学术的) writer. Written work at college level cannot be done at the last minute or in a rush. It takes time. Turn to your teachers. If they will read draft essays then make sure you can get feedback (反馈) ahead of the final submission.____28____Students who get feedback on their work always do better than those who do not. It is one of the few educational laws that holds true in all cases.
A.Don’t try to do it all the night before.
B.However, a lecture is a listening workout.
C.Thinking clearly cannot be done in a rush.
D.So train your ear, listen carefully, but don’t be silent.
E.Reading is the most important thing that any student does.
F.Re-writing has proved to be the turning point in one’s degree.
G.If they won’t read drafts (草稿), then ask them to run through (匆匆浏览) your ideas.
Do you ever feel sick of your life? Then why not sell it? This is exactly what one man is attempting to do following the breakdown of his marriage.
Ian Usher, a 44-year-old British man living in Australia, is using the online auction site eBay to sell not only his belongings, but his entire life. Up for grabs (供选购的) are his house and everything that’s in it: his car, his jetski (水上摩托车 ), his parachuting gear, even his pots and pans. But what makes the auction unique is that the package also includes a two-week trial run(试验)at his job as an assistant in a drug store, and even an introduction to his friends in the local area.
The lovelorn Mr Usher said he no longer wanted to be reminded of the life he shared with his ex-wife, and hopes the sale will raise money for a life-changing adventure. He said that once the sale has gone through, he plans to “walk out of his front door with his wallet in one pocket and his passport in the other,” and see where the next plane takes him.
Bidding(竞标)opened on Sunday, and by Monday morning had already reached the staggering figure (高额数字) of 13 million yuan (2 million Australian dollars). Unfortunately for Mr Usher most of the high bids turned out to be fake, as he had not activated a registration system (登记系统) that would have only let genuine (真的) bids through. After removing the bogus bids the value of his “life” stood at 2 million yuan, though he hopes the final figure will be over 3 million yuan.
Whatever the final price he receives, he is by no means the first person to try to sell something unusual online. A fighter jet, a piece of Britney Spears’ chewing gum, and even some toenail clippings have all been sold on eBay.

The world’s animal populations have reduced by more than two thirds since 1970, according to a recent research from the World Wildlife Fund.
The London group provided information on 32,000 wildlife populations which included more than 5,000 species. The researchers found that population sizes had reduced by 69 percent on average. They said the loss of forests, human exploitation (开采) of the environment, pollution, and climate change were great causes of the reduced populations. Land-use change is still the biggest threat to wildlife. However, the researchers also added that climate change was likely to become the major cause in the coming years.
Wildlife populations in Latin American and the Caribbean Sea area were greatly affected. The research showed a 94 percent drop in those areas in over 50 years. Wildlife populations in river and lake habitats decreased the most. Freshwater populations have reduced dramatically since 1970. For example, one population of pink river dolphins in the Amazon River area of Brazil fell by 65 percent between 1996 and 2021.
These findings are a red flag that warns of a larger system failure on the way. Even one species’ population drop can affect other species, finally affecting the ecosystem’s ability to function (运转). Humans depend on an unchangeable climate and productive farmland and fisheries to get ahead, but the present states are threatening many life-sustaining ecosystems.
Our future depends on changing the unbalance situation of nature just as it depends on addressing climate change. And you can’t solve one without solving the other. Everyone has a role in doing his bit, from individuals (个人) to companies to governments. If nothing changes, animal populations will undoubtedly continue to fall, threatening the ecosystems on which we all depend.
33.What is the greatest threat to the wildlife populations now?
A.Air pollution. B.Land-use change.
C.Global climate warming. D.Illegal hunting and killing.
34.How does the author describe the decrease of freshwater wildlife?
A.By listing numbers. B.By giving an example.
C.By explaining the causes. D.By making a comparison.
35.What can be the final result of one species’ population drop?
A.The farmland becomes poorer. B.The weather changes unexpectedly.
C.The whole ecosystem function poorly. D.The fishing ground is completely polluted.
36.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To warn humans of their extreme behaviour.
B.To raise funds for research on climate change.
C.To show the difficulty of protecting ecosystem.
D.To call on people to take action to protect wildlife.
Since early May 2022, cases of monkeypox (猴痘) have been reported from countries where the disease is not endemic(地方性流行的), and continue to be reported in several endemic countries. Most confirmed cases with travel history reported travel to countries in Europe and North America, rather than West or Central Africa where the monkeypox virus is endemic. This is the first time that many monkeypox cases and clusters have been reported concurrently in non-endemic and endemic countries in widely disparate geographical areas. Click here for more information.
WHO is collaborating with health authorities to prevent further spread of the disease. We are issuing guidance to help countries on surveillance, laboratory work, clinical care, infection prevention and control, as well as risk communication and community engagement to inform communities at risk and the broader general public about monkeypox and how to keep safe.
You can catch monkeypox through close contact with someone who has symptoms. Close contact includes skin-to-skin; face-to-face; mouth-to-skin and mouth-to-mouth. You can also catch monkeypox from contaminated bedding, towels, surfaces or objects.
Protect yourself
• If someone you know is diagnosed with or has suspected monkeypox, avoid close contact with them
• Know the symptoms and check yourself regularly
• If you have symptoms, seek health advice and self-isolate while you wait to get tested.
• Get vaccinated if it is available to you
• Clean and disinfect (将……消毒) environments that could have been contaminated with the virus from someone who is infectious
• Stay informed about monkeypox in your area
• Have open, non-judgmental conversations with people you come into close contact with about any symptoms you or they may have
Protect others if you are recovering from monkeypox at home
• Isolate in a separate room
• Use a separate bathroom, or clean and disinfect it (with household disinfectant) after each use
• Clean hands frequently using soap and water or an alcobol-based hand sanitizer
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects
• Don’t sweep and vacuum
• Use separate dishes, cups, bedding, towels and electronics.

As introduction to backpacking go, this might be pushing it. At noon on a brilliant Tuesday in March, my 12-year-old son Kai and I are a mile and a half into a four-day, 27-mile walk through the Grand Canyon (峡谷) — his first backpacking trip — when he asks, “Are we almost to camp?” Um, no. Camp, at Hermit Creek, is seven miles and nearly 2,500 feet below. That will take us several more hours.
We are here largely because of a birthday note Kai wrote to me two years ago in which he declared, “You used to be a wild 10-year-old like me and now you’re a wild 53-year-old. We can do so many things together! I am excited for when I’m old enough for the Grand Canyon.”
There are, I suppose, dads who could resist that, just as there are fathers who would plan an experience-appropriate trip for their sons. I am neither, so here we are. Never mind that; aside from simply being 12, Kai has done almost nothing to physically prepare for this. Or that I haven’t backpacked for 13 years.
We go down a poorly maintained path off the canyon with twisty trees and twining bushes. Gradually the view broadens, the landscape in Vishnu fascinates Kai greatly. “This place is amazing.” he says. Nightfall in the canyon can be magical. Darkness surrounds us, pressed by cool air. Hearing the sound of a waterfall, we lie down to take in the stars. Twice I suggest we turn in. “Not yet,” Kai says. “This is too unbelievable.”
Wednesday, we travel three miles to Monument Creek, and hike a mile and 1,000 feet down to the Colorado River. The next morning at 7:30 when we march out, I’m optimistic, and Kai sets a quick pace. Friday, we rise before dawn and are the first ones out of camp; for an hour we have the Bright Angel Trail and its soaring (高耸的) scenery to ourselves.
In that birthday card Kai had also written, “Even when you’re 100, you will always be wild,” Nice, If I’m lucky enough to make it there, it looks like I’ll have company.

Huron, Ohio, was where I’d spent my twenties, working on a steamer out on the Great Lakes. My wife and I started our family there, and later we came back to Huron to retire. Then, during the final stage of construction on our new home, I had difficulty breathing. The doctor determined I needed open-heart surgery. I was admitted to a hospital in Sandusky.
The night before my surgery, I was so worried that I couldn’t sleep. I lay in my hospital bed praying and thinking about the events in my life that had led me to this point. I remembered how I had fallen in love with Huron and its people. I remembered a Christmas many years ago…
The shipping season had been good to me, so that winter I decided to buy some Christmas gifts and help out a family in town. “I know a family that would appreciate a visit from Santa Claus,” the owner of the store said. “A woman with six children just lost her husband.”
The store owner helped me wrap some presents and gave me the family’s address. That evening I delivered the packages. A little girl with brown eyes and the sweetest smile answered the door. “Santa asked me to bring these gifts to you and your family,” I said.
The girl’s eyes lit up even more. “Tell Santa ‘thank you’ from Dorothy,” she said. I never saw her or her family again, but all in town helped give Huron a permanent place in my heart. A heart now needed fixing badly.
A nurse came in to check on me. “Where are you from?” the nurse asked. “I’m from Huron,” I told her proudly.
She smiled. “I grew up there,” she said. “I loved it, even though life wasn’t easy. You see, I lost my father when I was just a child.”
I looked into her brown eyes and knew I’d seen them before. “Do you recall a sailor bringing presents to your door one Christmas?”

The Zambia-born mother of two holds a corporate job, hosts a podcast, has climbed some of the tallest mountains around the world, and still has the time to run a non- profit organization that focuses on education in Africa.
“My grandfather always used to say, ‘if you don’t live a life of service, that’s a life wasted, ” she said. In 2013, she founded Summits With A Purpose in South Africa. With every climb, she raises funds to help build schools and libraries. Khumalo is not going to just climb and take a selfie. She is going to climb and then make a difference.
Not long after her first-ever summit, she turned her eyes toward the world’s tallest peak: Mt. Qomolangma, located in the Himalayas. The first three attempts were tough and heart-breaking for Khumalo: She experienced everything from natural disasters to losing consciousness in the “death zone”, Qomolangma’s top stretch over 8, 000 meters above sea level, where oxygen is dangerously low.
On May 16, 2019 —her fourth bid —she succeeded, becoming the first Black African woman to reach the summit. In total, only eight of the 4,000 people who’ve ever summited Qomolangma are Black.
Khumalo is humbled by what she’s achieved so far, but she notes, “I don’t think that I’ve broken those stereotypes yet; there’s still a lot more work to be done,” adding that representation should extend beyond the mountain tops, too.
“It’s not just about Qomolangma; it is a gift that we need to leave for the next generation wherever we are,” she says, calling on her peers to step outside their comfort zone to show that Black people belong in all spaces.

Andrea Martínez, a 21-year-old law student at the National Autonomous University of México, has been admitted as the country’s first female college football (橄榄球) player. When Martínez tried out for the team, she assumed the school had a women’s team where she might be placed, but was told she would be playing alongside the men.
Martínez got her start as a soccer player before trying out for the university’s football team after they posted an open call for kickers. Martínez wasn’t out to play football specifically, but saw that she could apply her talents as a soccer player to a new game. “The decision I made was to try a new sport. Nothing else,” she said. “I was very happy when I heard the news that I had been the girl selected.”
Martínez is not the only soccer player turning to football, especially as it becomes more popular throughout the country. It is estimated that there are about 48 million football fans in Mexico and the numbers are growing. Martínez is also not the first female college football kicker, although she is the first one in Mexico. In 1997, Liz Heaston became the first woman in the US to play that position on a college team. However, Ashley Martin was the first woman to score a point as a kicker in 2001.
It was never Martínez’s intention to become famous, but that’s exactly what has happened. So far, Martínez has done more than 80 interviews and has seen herself on the cover of every major newspaper in the country and even on national television, a rarity (罕见的事) for any college football player.
“There are little girls and boys who come and ask me for a photo or come up and say very nice words to me,” she said. “It’s the most satisfying thing I’ve ever felt, realizing that perhaps I’m inspiring them a little.”

It’s no secret now that the more time we spend on social media, the more we feel dissatisfied with ourselves. We tend to compare ourselves to influences and celebrities- so it’s easy to understand how that can affect our confidence.
But, how often have you found yourself comparing your life to your friends? Engaging with social media shared by our friends can be more damaging than looking at content shared by celebrities, new research has found.
The study looking at how social media affects body image found that any social media engagement was significantly associated with lower “appearance satisfaction”. Additionally, it found that engaging with content posted by people the participants knew was more than twice as damaging as looking at content posted by strangers, including celebrities.
Viren Swami, Professor of Social Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University, believes this is partly because we know it’s hard to attain the lives of celebrities or influences, but when we’re comparing ourselves to our friends, it feels like we should- or could-live the way they do.
“One possible explanation is that people may perceive a post showing appearance as being much more attainable if it comes from someone they know, adding expectation or pressure on the person engaging in the post, ” he said. “At the same time, people may be more critically engaged with posts by the likes of models and celebrities, and therefore perceive the images they share to be more unrealistic."
This is not just confined to body image though. We all have one area in our lives that triggers(触 发)us. Maybe you’ve been searching for a new job for months and you find yourself on social media, envying your school friend who just landed their dream role. Maybe. . .
All this is to say the obvious: we only see part of people’s lives -and if it’s getting you down, you’re probably comparing your insides to other people’s outsides. Everyone has their struggles and life is indeed not perfect for anyone. So, put down your phone, get offline, be thankful and try to live your own life.
63.What did the new study find?
A.Social media invites unfavorable comments.
B.Friends’ posts affect us more than celebrities’.
C.Celebrities have a negative influence on our life.
D.Body image causes more concern than social life.
64.Why are we more likely to compare with our friends according to Swami?
A.They serve as role models.
B.We know the way they live. ,
C.Their lifestyles are accessible.
D.We are curious about their life.
65.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Restricted.
B.Related.
C.Devoted.
D.Exposed.
66.What does the author suggest people do?
A.Find your dream and fight for it.
B.Stop comparing and be yourself.
C.Be grateful and lead a perfect life.
D.Stop complaining and get down to work.
