Many educators fear students will use the artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT to write their reports or cheat on homework. But other teachers are including it in the classroom.
Donnie Piercey is a teacher in Lexington, Kentucky. He told his 23 5th-grade students to try and outsmart the tool that was creating writing assignments. Piercey says his job is to prepare students for a world where knowledge of AI will be required.
He describes ChatGPT as just the newest technology in his 17 years of teaching that caused concern about the possibility of cheating. They include tools to help with math and spelling as well as Google, Wikipedia and YouTube.
“As educators, we haven’t figured out the best way to use artificial intelligence yet,” he added. “But it’s coming, whether we want it to or not.”
Teaching a lower grade level, Piercey is less worried about cheating than high school teachers. His school system has blocked students from ChatGPT but permits teachers to use it.
Students in Piercey’s class said working with a chatbot makes learning fun.
Students Olivia Laksi and Katherine McCormick, both 10, said they can see the good and bad parts of working with chatbots. They can help students who have trouble putting their thoughts into writing. And there is no limit to the creativity it can add to classwork.
McCormick said students can use it for suggestions, but should not use it to do all the work.
“You shouldn’t take advantage of it,” McCormick said. “You’re not learning anything if you type in what you want, and then it gives you the answer.”

Egypt is home to more than 100 pyramids, including the landmark Giza pyramid which is the last-standing ancient wonder of the world. It is an example of the wisdom and skills of ancient development. The Great Pyramid of Giza has stood tall since the 26th Century BC, and took 27years to build, with around 2.3 million blocks of stone weighing 6 million tons.
Giza is actually made up of three pyramids, Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure—each one is named after a pharaoh (法老). Now, scientists are using High Energy Physics to scan (扫描) the Khufu structure at Giza. The new technology scans deeper into the pyramid than before, and then maps its inside structure.
What we see now is only the central structure of the Great Pyramid. Although the pyramid has been studied closely for centuries, there are two mysterious holes that have kept archaeologists puzzled.
One is around 98 feet long and 20 feet high and could be one large space or several rooms, according to scans of the pyramid, while the other is much smaller, just beyond the north face of the pyramid. Archaeologists are not sure what either space functioned as; the most exciting possibility is that the larger space is the hidden room to keep Khufu, who governed from around 2551BC to 2528BC.
Finding holes in pyramids isn’t unusual, though. Nowadays, though, we have the technology to find out, compared to days gone by when examinations would have to blow up the pyramids to explore.
“Since the instruments that are used are very large, they cannot be placed inside the pyramid, and therefore our approach is to put them outside and meticulously move them along the base. In this way, we can build up the required data set,” the team wrote in the paper. The technology is so precise that scientists may be able to even tell objects within the hole.
12.What can be learned about the Great Pyramid of Giza?
A.It is named after a pharaoh. B.It is the largest ancient wonder of the world.
C.It was built with around 6 million stones. D.It has a history of more than 4, 000 years.

C.The advanced research technology. D.The central structure of the Giza pyramid.
14.What does the author think of the examinations in the days gone by?
A.They caused damage. B.They took long to carry out.
C.They used no equipment. D.They explained almost all puzzles.
15.What does the underlined word “meticulously” in paragraph 6 mean?
    A.Carefully. B.Quickly. C.Formally. D.Secretly.

Around 7,000 B.C.(during the Neolithic period), some hunters and gatherers began to rely chiefly on agriculture for their life. Indeed, agriculture itself evolved over the course of time and Neolithic peoples had long known how to grow crops. The real transformation of human life occurred when huge numbers of people began to rely primarily and permanently on the grain they grew and the animals they domesticated.
Agriculture made possible a more stable and secure life. With it Neolithic peoples developed, starting an energetic, creative time. They were responsible for many fundamental inventions and innovations that the modern world takes for granted. First is systematic agriculture – the reliance of Neolithic peoples on agriculture as their primary, not merely additional, source of food.
Thus they developed the primary economic activity of the entire ancient world and the basis of all modern life. With the settled routine of Neolithic farmers came the evolution of towns and eventually cities. Neolithic farmers usually raised more food than they could consume, and their surpluses permitted larger, healthier populations. Population growth in turn created an even greater reliance on settled farming, as only systematic agriculture could sustain the increased numbers of people. Since surpluses of food could also be traded for other goods, the Neolithic time witnessed the beginnings of large-scale exchange of goods. With the increasing complexity of Neolithic societies, writing emerged with the need to keep records and later by the urge to record experiences, learning, and beliefs.
The change to settled life also had a deep impact on the family. The shared needs and pressures that encourage extended-family ties are less urgent in settled than in nomadic (游牧的) societies. Ties to the extended family weakened. In towns and cities, the nuclear family was more dependent on its immediate neighbors than on distant relatives.
25.The passage talks mainly about ____________.
A.why many human societies depend on agriculture
B.what changes agriculture brought to human life
    C.how Neolithic peoples discovered agriculture
D.why the first agricultural societies failed
26.With agriculture, Neolithic people no longer needed to ____________.
A.move from one place to another
    B.exchange goods with others
    C.domesticate wild animals
    D.worry about their safety
27.“Their surpluses” (in paragraph 3) refer to ____________.
A.the amount of food they had to consume
B.the more food they produced than needed
C.the extent to which they relied on agriculture
D.the increase in population agriculture brought about
28.According to the passage, how did the shift to agricultural societies impact people’s family?
A.Family members began to work together to raise food
B.Immediate neighbors often became family members
C.The extended family became less important
    D.The nuclear family became self-sufficient

Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.
However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.
This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.
When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.
Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become rally good at whatever it is you put all that work into.
29.In Paragraph 2, the underlined word that refers to__________.
A.being good at something B.setting a practical goal
C.putting in more time D.succeeding in life
30.Successful people suggest doing what one loves because__________.
A.work makes one feel pain B.one tends to enjoy his work
C.one gives up his work easily D.it takes a lot of time to succeed
31.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.Successful people like to show their great skills.
B.People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.
C.People need to achieve success at the cost of life.
D.It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.

Archaeologists are not sure what either space functioned as; the most exciting possibility is that the larger space is the hidden room to keep Khufu, who governed from around 2551BC to 2528BC.(根据对金字塔的扫描,其中一个长约98英尺,高约20英尺,可能是一个大空间或几个房间,而另一个小得多,就在金字塔的北面之外。
根据倒数第二段的“Nowadays, though, we have the technology to find out, compared to days gone by when examinations would have to blow up the pyramids to explore.(然而,如今,与过去必须炸毁金字塔才能探索的日子相比,我们有技术可以找到答案)”推知,作者认为过去的研究方法会对金字塔造成破坏。故选A。
根据划线词所在句子“Since the instruments that are used are very large, they cannot be placed inside the pyramid, and therefore our approach is to put them outside and meticulously move them along the base. (该团队在论文中写道:“由于使用的仪器非常大,它们不能放在金字塔内,因此我们的方法是把它们放在外面,并沿着底座meticulously移动。这样,我们就可以建立所需的数据集)”可知,现在的设备非常大,为了不对金字塔造成破坏,因此只能放在外部,并且小心地移动,以获取所需的数据。由此猜测,划线词意为“小心地”,与carefully同义。故选A。

根据最后一段最后一句“The hot springs are said to be good for health because of their stable flow, constant temperature and mineral-rich water. (据说,温泉因其水流稳定、温度恒定和富含矿物质而有益于健康。)”可知,因为长白山的温泉对人身体有好处,所以长白山值得一游。故选A项。
根据第一段“For those who are keen to explore natural wonders and cultural heritage sites and to pursue (追求) the passion of local people for ice and snow in Jilin Province, now it is the time to go there. (对于那些热衷于探索自然奇观和文化遗产,并追求吉林省当地人对冰雪的热情的人来说,现在是时候去那里了。)”和文章描述可知,作者宣传了吉林的三个有特色的景点,希望人们去吉林旅游。由此可知,本文最有可能出现在报纸的旅游专栏。故选C项。

19.细节理解题。根据第二段“The two became distant (遥远的) when Ryan’s parents divorced (离婚), but then ran into each other 10 years later. Realizing how much he liked his grandmother and missed that lost time, he made a plan to spend time with her. (瑞安的父母离婚后,两人变得疏远,但10年后又相遇了。意识到自己是多么喜欢祖母,多么怀念那些逝去的时光,他制定了一个计划,要和祖母共度时光。)”和第五段中的“Two years later I set up a GoFundMe called Grandma Joy’s Road Trip in the spirit of making up for the lost time and proving that you’re never too old to pack in a lifetime of adventure and travel. (两年后,我在众筹网站GoFundMe上建立了一个名为‘奶奶乔伊自驾游’的网站,目的是弥补失去的时间,并证明你永远都不会因为太老而不能去冒险和旅行。)”可知,Ryan在GoFundMe网站上建立了一个名为“乔伊奶奶的公路旅行”,是为了弥补失去的十年的时间,陪伴奶奶去旅行。故选A项。
根据最后一段最后一句“There have been difficult moments that we had to work through, but finally we get to where we need to be. (我们有过艰难的时刻,但最终我们达到了我们需要达到的目标)”可知,在瑞恩和他奶奶的旅行中,克服了许多困难。故选C项。
21.主旨大意题。文章第四段“So he invited his grandma to travel with him. (所以他邀请奶奶和他一起去旅行)”,及最后第二段“In the past four years, they’re travelled more than 25,000 miles across 38 states. (在过去的四年里,他们在38个州旅行了超过25000英里。到目前为止,他们已经参观了美国61个国家公园中的29个,大部分冒险经历都被记录在了Instagram上。)”可知,文章讲述了Ryan带着他的奶奶一起去旅游的故事,“A Boy Travels with His Grandma (一个男孩和奶奶一起旅行)”适合作文章的标题。故选B项。

    【导语】本文是说明文。文章主要讲述农业给人类生活带来的改变。
25.主旨大意题。根据第一段的“The real transformation of human life occurred when huge numbers of people began to rely primarily and permanently on the grain they grew and the animals they domesticated.(人类生活的真正转变发生在大量的人开始主要和永久地依赖他们种植的粮食和他们驯养的动物时。)”,第二段的“Agriculture made possible a more stable and secure life. (农业使更稳定、更安全的生活成为可能。)”,第三段的“ Population growth in turn created an even greater reliance on settled farming, as only systematic agriculture could sustain the increased numbers of people.(人口增长反过来又使人们更加依赖定居农业,因为只有系统化的农业才能养活不断增长的人口。)”
根据第二段首句“Agriculture made possible a more stable and secure life.(农业使更稳定、更安全的生活成为可能。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“The change to settled life also had a deep impact on the family. The shared needs and pressures that encourage extended-family ties are less urgent in settled than in nomadic (游牧的) societies. Ties to the extended family weakened. In towns and cities, the nuclear family was more dependent on its immediate neighbors than on distant relatives.(定居生活的改变也对家庭产生了深远的影响。在定居社会中,鼓励大家庭联系的共同需求和压力没有游牧社会那么紧迫。与大家庭的联系减弱了。在城镇,核心家庭更依赖近邻而不是远亲。)”可知,向农业社会的转变使得大家庭不太重要。故选C。

    【导语】本文是一篇议论文,有人认为成功是属于那些有天赋的人,或者是出生于良好家庭的人,也有人认为成功大部分是来自于好运。作者认为成功要有目标,经历时间和实践。
29.词句猜测题。根据上文“However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. (然而,要在生活中取得成功,首先需要设定一个目标,然后逐渐使它变得更加实际。) ”和划线句 “And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. (除此之外,为了真正擅长某件事,一个人需要花费至少1万个小时的学习和练习。)”可知that指代上文提到的“设定一个实际的目标”,故选B。
30.细节理解题。根据第二段“To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in. (要在某一方面变得出色,需要更多的时间,而大多数人不会这样投入)”和第三段“This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it. (这就是为什么许多成功人士会建议你做自己喜欢的事情。如果你不喜欢你所做的事情,它会让你感觉难以忍受的痛苦,很可能会让你在擅长它之前就放弃。)”可知,成功人士建议做自己喜欢的事情,因为成功需要很多时间,否则难以忍受,故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据第四段“When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway. (当你看到人们展示出一些卓越的技能或取得了巨大的成功时,你就知道他们付出了生命中很大的一部分,付出了巨大的代价。有时很容易认为他们是幸运的,或者他们天生就有一些罕见的天赋,但这样想对你没有好处,而且你很有可能错了。)”可推测,有时很多人的成功并不是因为运气和天赋。故选B。
