    Unit 8  Natural disasters Comic strip & Welcome to the unit

    设计说明

    首先通过观看一组有关天气的图片导入新课,然后学习comic strip部分内容,继而了解过去进行时结构。呈现一些有关自然灾害的图片,进而区分自然灾害和事故,再完成课本A部分的内容,最后通过对Part B部分的学习,来谈论自然灾害和事故。

    教学目标

    通过本课节的教学,让学生达成以下目标:

    1.知识目标:

    掌握词汇:up, earthquake, coach, flood, village, storm, lose final, thousands of, wash away, catch fire

    2.能力目标:

    (1) 了解几种常见自然灾害的英文名称。

    (2) 学会简单谈论常见的自然灾害及其导致的后果。

    3.情感目标:

    学习常见自然灾害及其导致的后果,培养学生应对自然灾害的能力。

    重点难点

    重点:学会几种常见天气的英文表达,并能谈论喜欢的季节。

    难点:灵活使用生词、短语和重要知识点。

    教学准备

    PPT课件;相关图片。

    授课时数

    1课时

    教学过程

    Step 1  Lead-in

    1. Show some pictures about weather and talk about the weather. 

      sunny  cloudy  windy  snowy  foggy  rainy

    2. Comic strip

      (1) Say: Hobo has some trouble. What happened to him?

      (2) Listen and answer

      Didn’t Eddie hear the rain?   No, he didn’t.

    Why didn’t Hobo want to go home alone?

      Because Hobo wanted Eddie to mop up the water.

    What was Hobo doing when it started to rain?

    He was sleeping when it started to rain.

    Check the answers with students.

    (3) Analysis. 

    He was sleeping when it started to rain.

    过去进行时

      结构:was/were (not) +现在分词

      表示过去某一时刻正在进行的动作或过去某一阶段一直在进行的动作。

       I was doing my homework at 8:00 last night.

       What were you doing the whole morning?

    (4) Listen and repeat the dialogue between Eddie and Hobo.

    (5) Read the dialogue between Eddie and Hobo in roles. 

    (6) Act out the dialogue between Eddie and Hobo.

    Step 2  Presentation  

    1. Show a picture about all kinds of natural disasters like fire, flood, earthquake, tornado etc.

    2. Say: Bad weather sometimes causes (引起) natural disasters. Too much rain in a short time may cause a flood. The flood may wash away the village. Heavy rain and strong winds cause a big storm. Thunder and lightning may start a big fire. An earthquake will kill thousands of people. A coach crashed into a tree. It is not a natural disaster but an accident.

    3. Ask the students to think about: What causes natural disasters / accidents, nature or people? Then tell them that nature often causes disasters while people often cause accidents.

    Step 3  Part A

    1. Read some newspaper headlines and tick out ()the natural disasters.

     (Keys: 2, 5, 6, 8)

    2. Analysis.

      Flood washes away village.  (a headline)

      In fact we should sayThe flood washed away the village.

      In newspaper headlines, the simple present tense is used and words like a, an, the and the verb be are often left out(省略).

      lose final= lose the final         car accident= a car accident

      crash into tree= crash into a tree   wash away village= wash away the village

    start big fire= start a big fire      fall from tree =fall from a tree

    big storm= a big storm

    Step 4  Part B

    Sandy and Millie are chatting online about natural disasters and accidents.

    1. Listen and Answer.

      Listen to the tape and try to find the time, place, reason and result of the fire that happened in a UK school.

    2. Listen and repeat the dialogue after the tape.

    3. Read the dialogue in roles.

    4. Work in pairs.

      Give some information about a flood and a traffic accident. Give them some time to make up a dialogue. Show them a sample conversation.

    Sample conversation:

    A: Did you hear about...?

    B: No. What happened?

    A: ... (describe it)

    B: Oh, really?

    A: Yes, it was terrible... (describe it)

    B: Was anyone hurt?

    A: Yes/No, ...

    Then choose some pairs to present their dialogue.

    Step 5  Discussion

    1. Discuss in groups: What can we do to protect the environment?

      Give them three minutes to discuss. Then choose some students to share their ideas.

    2. Give a summary.

    We can...

    (1) not throw rubbish everywhere

    (2) turn off the lights and the TV in time

    (3) ride/walk instead of driving

    (4) send e-cards instead of postcards

    (5) use paper bags instead of plastic bags

    (6) use both sides of the paper

    (7) reuse the water

    (8) plant more trees

    We have only one earth. Protecting the earth is protecting ourselves.

    Step 6  Homework

    1. Remember the new words and phrases.

    2. Practice the dialogue with your partner.

    3. Learn more about natural disasters on the Internet.
