Cats are the most popular pets among Americans. So it is not surprising there are many expressions (表达) about cats. Do you know any of them? Now let me introduce some to you.
Some cats like to catch small birds, like canaries. If someone looks very proud or satisfied with himself, we say he looks like the cat that ate the canary.
Sometimes, a cat likes to play with a small animal it catches. So if you play cat and mouse with someone, you change between different kinds of behavior when dealing with another person. For example, a child might offer something sweet to her little brother, and then take it away when he reaches for it.
A cat will often catch a small animal and present it to its owner. The saying that looks like something the cat dragged (拖) in describes something in bad condition.

In the world of gestures, the best suggestion is to remember the two A’s-Ask and Aware(意识到). If you see a gesture that is new or puzzling, ask a local person what it means. Then be aware of the body signs around you. Let’s check out three common hand gestures, the OK-Sign, the Thumb-Up and the V-Sign.
1. The OK-Sign
This gesture was popular in the USA during the early 19th century by the newspapers that were starting using first letters to shorten common phrases. Use the gesture to tell a French person their cooking is wonderful and maybe they’ll throw you out. In Japan, it can mean money. If you travel internationally, the safest rule is to always ask the locals to show you their insult (侮辱) signs to avoid any possible uncomfortable situations.
2. The Thumb-Up
When Europeans count from one to five, they use the Thumb-Up to mean one and the index finger (食指) becomes two; but most English-speaking people count one on the index finger and two on the middle finger, in this case, the Thumb-Up will mean the number five; it’s commonly used by hitch-hikers(搭便车的人) who are thumbing a lift; it is an OK-Sign; and when the thumb is sharply upwards, it becomes an insult.
3. The V-Sign
Winston Churchill popularized the V-for-victory sign during the World War II, but his two-fingered gesture was done with the palm (手掌) facing out. What about the palm faces towards the speaker? It would be an insult.
26.The best suggestion in the world of gestures is ________.
A.to ask a local person what they mean B.to know the body signs around you
C.to check out three common hand gestures D.to remember the two A’s-Ask and Aware
27.When was the OK-Sign gesture popular in the USA?
A.During the early 17th century. B.During the late 18thcentury.
C.During the early 19th century. D.During the late 19th century.
28.How many meanings about the Thumb-Up gesture are mentioned in the passage?
A.2. B.3. C.4. D.5.
29.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.When Europeans count from one to five, they use the Thumb-Up to mean one.
B.You can use the OK-Sign gesture to tell a Frenchman their cooking is wonderful.
C.Most English-speaking people use the Thumb-Up to mean the number one.
D.If you do business with Japanese, you can’t use the OK-Sign gesture to mean money.

Kato Lomb was born at an exciting time. It was 1909 in Budapest, and the world that she grew up in was about to see great changes.
After getting her degree(学位)in chemistry, she saw little hope of getting a job in the scientific fields. So she decided to teach English. She just had to learn it first. In her language learning, Kato started reading cheap but exciting novels(小说), carrying a dictionary with her all the time.
Her way of language learning made sense—if the story is exciting enough, it can keep you going past what you don’t understand. In the end, you can pick up what you need from the context(上下文). The reading took her further than she could have imagined.
After the end of the Second World War, she began a long and successful career(事业)of Interpretation(口译)and translation. In fact, she was one of the first professional simultaneous interpreters(专业同声传译人员)in the world. Simultaneous interpretation is a job much more difficult than translation as all the work happens in real time. Not stopping at English, she learned French, Russian, Polish, Chinese, Japanese and quite a few other languages that she used to work as a translator.
Kato believed that interest was the most important part of language learning. Grammar could always come later if you were excited about learning and understanding new words in the language. No matter what language she was learning, she was always interested in it and believed she could complete(完成)the task.
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。

Sayings are used every day. You may ask an unhappy friend why she’s “feeling blue”. If you’ve done only a small part of a big job, you might call it “a drop(滴)in the bucket(桶).” These sayings don’t mean exactly what the words say. But it’s easy to tell why we use them. Blue is a cool, quiet color. So it’s a good word for “sad”. A bucket holds too many drops of water to count. So just one drop is very little.
Other sayings are more difficult to understand. When you are about to go to bed, you are going to “hit the hay(干草)”. This saying does not make much sense unless you know where it came from. It was first used in the 1930s. At that time, many Americans were out of work. Some went from place to place, looking for jobs. At night they were very tired. They often made a bed of hay in a field or barn(谷仓). As soon as their heads “hit the hay”, they fell asleep.
Here is another saying. When you are sick, you might say you are “under the weather”. But why? This saying is more than 200 years old. It began in the days when many people went from place to place by boat. When storm winds rocked the boat, people often felt sick. The boat was sailing(航行)“under the weather”.
Young kids may find old sayings like these hard to understand, and old people may also have difficulty understanding new sayings. That’s why a granny might not know what you mean by saying “give me five”. She might think you’re “off your rocker” which means “out of your mind”.
36.Blue means _________.
A.happy B.sad C.worried D.nervous
37.When you are about to go to bed, you can say “__________ ”.
A.a drop in the bucket B.give me five
C.hit the hay D.off your rocker
38.When did the saying “under the weather” begin to be used?
A.More than 200 years ago. B.More than 300 years ago.
C.More than 100 years ago. D.More than 400 years ago.
39.From the last paragraph, we can know __________.
A.“give me five” is an old saying
B.young people like to use old sayings
C.different sayings should be used correctly
D.new saying is difficult for old people to understand
40.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The History of Sayings B.Why to Use Sayings
C.How to Use Sayings D.Old Sayings and New Sayings
