When we think of Christmas, we probably think of 36 , Christmas trees and Santa Claus. But behind all these things lies the true meaning of Christmas: the importance of sharing and giving love and joy to people around us. The story in A Christmas Carol is perhaps the best example of this.
A Christmas Carol is a famous short novel written by British writer Charles Dickens (1812-1870). It is about an old man 37 Scrooge who never laughs or smiles. He only thinks about himself and is 38 to share things with others. He doesn’t treat others nicely. He just cares about whether he can 39 and he hates Christmas. One Christmas Eve, Scrooge sees the ghost of Jacob Marley, his dead business partner. Marley used to be just like Scrooge, so he was 40 after he died. He warns Scrooge to change his ways if he doesn’t want to end up like him. He also tells Scrooge to expect 41 ghosts to visit him.
That 42 , the ghosts visit Scrooge. First, the Ghost of Christmas Past takes him back to his childhood and reminds him 43 his happy days as a child. Then the second ghost, the Ghost of Christmas Present, takes him to see 44 others are spending Christmas this year. Everyone is happy, even poor people. The last one, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, takes him to the 45 . Scrooge sees that he is dead, but nobody cares. He is so 46 that he wakes up in his bed and finds out it is only the next morning — Christmas Day!
Scrooge decides to change his life and 47 to be a kind person. He 48 celebrates Christmas with his relatives. He also gives gifts to people in need. He now treats 49 with kindness and warmth, spreading love and joy everywhere he goes. And that is the true 50 of Christmas!

Greg’s story began with failure. In 1993, he set out to climb K2, the world’s second highest mountain. But Greg never made it to the top. After five days, he stumbled(踉跄)into the village of Korphe in northern Pakistan, injured(受伤)and hungry. The kind villagers there looked after him for several days.
Greg saw that the villagers were very poor and hungry, and some of them were ill. Also, the village school didn’t have a roof(屋顶)and the children wrote on the ground with sticks. Greg knew he wanted to do something to help. “ I’ll build you a school,” he told the villagers. “ I promise.”
Greg went back home to the USA to raise money for the school. He even lived in the car to save money! Finally he went back to Korphe and built the school. But this was just the beginning of something bigger! Since then, Greg’s organization has built around 80 schools and runs many others in Pakistan and other countries, too.
Greg hasn’t finished yet. He does many other things to help people in poor countries. He has got many prizes, but it’s the smiles of the children he has helped that makes him happy!

Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries. They found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(责备)themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don’t forget---if you are shy, you are not the only one.
    58. What does the underlined word “genetic”in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A. Passed down from parents. B. Learned from friends.
    C. Taught by teachers. D. Made up by brothers.
    59. What can be learned from the passage?
    A. Most little babies are born shy and quiet.
    B. If you are shy now, you will be shy forever.
    C. Many shy children have older brothers and sisters.
    D. Most Israeli people are shy of expressing opinions.
    60. We can learn from the passage that _______ may cause shyness.
    A. genetics, grown--ups and birthplace B. genetics, family size and birthplace
    C. family size, grown--ups and failure D. genetics, family size and freedom
    61. Scientists suggest that shy people can get over their shyness by______.
    A. blaming their failure on outside reasons

    D. trying to understand reasons for their shyness

In Western society, especially in the English-speaking world, the chance for young people to see the other countries and experience life is considered important. Many young people, when they finish school at the age of 18, take a gap year before they go to university.
Parents often want their children to grow up a little and see what the real world is like when they finish school. Although they are worried about their safety, many think that the advantages of independence and experience are worth the worries. Children are encouraged to be brave, independent and to explore the world on their own or with friends.
Young people also want to experience freedom and see what life is like on the other side. This other side could be the other side of the world or just the other side of life. For example, if they have a rich life, they may want to see how people in poor areas live.
A gap year after school is also an important chance for young people to spend time thinking about what they want to do with their lives. A little bit of growing up and experience will help them make their important career decisions, especially when they are unsure about what they want to study.
Another reason for going straight after school is to get a break from studying before they start the next few years of university. So anywhere you travel in the world, you will meet young European people exploring the world.
So much of the world has been travelled and explored. The young people are now looking for more worthy experiences. Some of them work as volunteers to do something for the country they are visiting. Many gap year volunteers are now spending a few months teaching English in Thailand, helping feed giant pandas in China or building a well(井) in a village in Africa.
These young people’s wish to explore the world is an expression of the values of the societies that they are part of. Both discovering the world and making a positive difference in it are important parts of the Western mind.
62.Which is NOT a reason for young people to take a gap year?
    A. Young people want to take a break from studying.
    B. Young people want to be sure about what to study.
    C. Parents encourage them to be brave and independent.
    D. Parents encourage them to live a free and wealthy life.
63.Now a gap year volunteer might do something more valuable like .
    A. experiencing different cultures B. helping protect rainforests in Brazil
    C. making friends with more people D. enjoying traditional local food
64.By taking a gap year, young people may .
    A. stay with their parents all the time B. make money for their further study
    C. help change the world for the better D. change the Western mind completely
65.The purpose of writing this article is to .
    A. show different opinions about gap year B. offer readers information about gap year
    C. discover new ways to take a gap year D. tell young people when to take a gap year

    八、阅读与回答问题 (10分)
Is it difficult for you to remember things? I`d like to tell you some ways to improve your memory, so you shouldn`t feel upset.
My first advice is that if you want to remember something well, you have to review it regularly(有规律地). You might review the material two days after you learn it, then a week later, then two weeks later, and then a month later. After a month you will find that you can easily remember the material.
My second advice is to use a colored pen to highlight (标注)the important parts on your book. This will help you in two days. First, it will help you pay attention to the most important parts when you learn the language. It is always easier to remember only the key points. Second, this will make reviewing easier. When you open your book, the colored parts will show you the most important things quickly. In this way, you don`t have to review all the material again.
Another piece of advice is to use the proper time well. First, review all the information in your mind right before you go to sleep. Your brain is working while you are sleeping. If you think about the information before you go to sleep, you might be able to remember it better. Another good time for memorizing information is in the morning because you have just rested and your brain is fresh and clear. So you might also try to review the important information in the morning.
    96. How long may it take you to remember the material easily if you review it regularly?
    97. What can make it easier to help remember the key points?
    98. What is the good time to review information?
    99. How many pieces of advice does the writer give?
    100. What is the passage mainly about?

Tom was a third-year student in a primary school. He was not interested in his lessons. He spent most of his time reading stories, playing computer games or watching TV. At night, he stayed up late watching cartoons or sports games. In the morning, he usually hurried to school. Sometimes he was so tired that he couldn’t stop sleeping in class.
His mother was worried about his poor schoolwork. She tried to make him work harder. She told him that if he could get a hundred in the exam, he would get a basketball as a prize. Jack was very happy to hear that.

How to Deal with the Exam Stress
Everyone may have the exam stress. A little bit of stress can be a good thing to us. If we have proper stress, we can think actively and work harder. Besides, it can remind us to go over our lessons on time to remember them. So we can pass the exam easily.
However, if we have too heavy stress, we can’t sleep well at night and we may feel too tired or sleepy in class. We may be afraid of exams too much and fail in the end.
In my opinion, to deal with stress, we’d better plan and prepare everything well. We should also form some good habits, such as enough exercise and healthy diets. Then we’ll feel relaxed and do well in exams.
