Amsterdam, the capital and most populous city in the Netherlands, is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museum, and cycling culture. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.
    Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You’ll also want to check out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a popular place for celebrity spotting and nightlife today.
    Transportation
Travelers should be aware that Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the busiest airports in the world. This airport is located about 15 kilometers southwest of city center. You can catch a train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station, which has many connecting routes. It’s typically not a good idea to drive a car to the city center because traffic is heavy and parking is difficult to find. Cycling is incredibly popular here, and it’s easy to find cheap bike rentals around town. Amsterdam has a flat terrain (地形) and is a great city to explore on foot.
    Money Saving Tips
Unless you really want to see the tulips (郁金香) blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.
Look for accommodations in Amsterdam’s South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.
Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.
Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They’re inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.
Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book.

I love travelling, but it hasn’t always been my passion. In my first year of university, I started to travel during the holiday. During the Christmas holiday I went to Paris, and during the spring vacation, I visited Athens and various cities in Italy. I was very excited because this was the first time I had travelled abroad with just my friends. This desire to travel started off simply as a way to have something to look forward to after exams, but I soon discovered how important it is to travel.
On my travels I have had the opportunity where I not only experience new and exciting cultures through the art, history, language and food, but also communicate with people who have different views on life. Travelling is a learning experience for both yourself and the people you meet. Some people I met during my travels had never heard of Gambia and it was very delightful to share my African roots with them. When you travel you will meet people who have different cultural backgrounds and as a result, sometimes your own ideas and opinions might be challenged. It’s important to learn to see things from other people’s perspectives (视角) and challenge your own.
This is how I realized that travelling is the realization of home. When you travel you can see a different setting, a different language and a different way of living. All these factors, mixed with a new and exciting adventure, make you realize your own home. Not just the physical location of home, but also your way of life and your outlook.
Travelling is truly an enriching experience and I am always excited about the discoveries that wait for me in my next adventure!

Located at Europe’s biggest water park, the Galaxy Erding in South Germany, the world’s first VR water slide takes the exciting experience to a whole new level by offering thrill-seekers the choice of three attractive worlds — Space, Sky, or Snow. By simply wearing a headset, riders can slide through a magical alien world, follow beautiful butterflies around floating islands or put themselves in a white winter wonderland. To make the experience even more heart-stopping, the 160-meter-long ride that lasts about 35 seconds has two uphill tracks that provide a roller-coaster-like experience.
While the tire slide, which has been successfully tested by almost 10,000 park goers since it opened in February 2021, is impressive, the technology behind it, developed by California startup Ballast is even more so. The specially-created waterproof headsets can be worn in water up to a few meters deep, without harming the delicate Samsung Galaxy S8 mobile devices that run the custom software for the VR experiences. The headsets also charge wirelessly (无线地), allowing park operators to swap out sets throughout the day.
The biggest challenge the company faced, however, was providing a suitable VR experience for everyone. That’s because unlike roller coasters, where the speed is fixed for all riders, water slide speeds vary depending on the weight of the person. To overcome the issue, Ballast fixed smart sensors (传感器) in important areas along the slide to keep track of the rider’s progress at all times. The information, conveyed through the headset, allows the custom software to adjust his or her location within the virtual world accordingly, making for a smooth, seasickness-free ride for all.
Though Ballast is thrilled at Space Glider’s success, the company has bigger ambitions. They want to create an experience where guests will be able to swim underwater surrounded by virtual dolphins, whales, and even sharks, without wearing the heavy headsets!

    8. What can people do if they go to the Galaxy Erding?
    A. They can swim with dolphins.
    B. They can explore the outer space.
    C. They can experience VR water slide.
    D. They can swap out sets all day long.
    9. Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?
    A. The tire slide has been successfully tested so far.
    B. Water slide speed vary depending on the age of the person.
    C. Thrill-seekers take the exciting experience by wearing a headset.
    D. The specially-created waterproof headsets can be applied in water.
    10. What can help park goers experience a smooth, seasickness free ride?
    A. The painkillers.
    B. The fixed speed.
    C. A sensor fixed in important areas.
    D. Virtual dolphins, whales and sharks.
    11. What is the author’s attitude towards the VR water slide?
    A. Objective. B. Subjective. C. Opposed. D. Indifferent.

    D
While visiting the North Pole in winter may not be at the top of your bucket list, the everchanging ICEHOTEL, which opened its doors to visitors on December 14 this year, may change your mind. 200 km north of the Arctic Circle in the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi, the hotel, which is carved entirely from ice, is rebuilt annually.
The 35 rooms, built to accommodate visitors on all kinds of budgets, vary from expensive suites to basic rooms that are furnished with just an icy bed and a reindeer skin. Among the highlights this year is the “Spruce Woods” suite. Sculpted (雕刻) by Christopher Pascoe and Jennie O’Keefe of Canada, it describes a camping scene complete with a classic microbus, a forest, and even an artificial campfire.
There is also the artfullycarved “Living Ocean” suite to remind visitors of the importance of saving our oceans. The room is full of carved sea life that includes coral and a shark “swimming” right over the ice bed. “The suite is inspired by global warming and the overfishing that affects our oceans,” says artist Jonathan Paul Green. “I also think the idea of using frozen water from a river in northern Sweden to create an ocean with shells, fish, and coral is exciting.”
The nearby “Haven” suite is a “magical gate of ice” guarded by two large animals. “We are inspired by the meeting between people and want to create an experience that stimulates curiosity and creativity,” says artist Jonas Johansson. “It feels like a dream to get to work with ice that allows our love for light, shine, and reflection to wander freely from thought to creation.”
Regardless of whether visitors select the carved suites or the basic ice rooms, the temperature is always set to a bonechilling -5℃! That is why guests are advised to snuggle (蜷伏) up inside sleeping bags and wear gloves and winter hats all night. Not surprisingly, most end up spending just a single night at this unique hotel before moving on to the conventional and warmer hotels nearby.

    A. A shopping list of buckets.
    B. A list of travelling destinations.

    C. It organizes camping activities.
    D. It lies in a coastal city.
    14. Where does the inspiration of “Living Ocean” suite come from?

How to Be a Good Tourist
We travel not only for work but also for fun and learning. New restaurants, galleries, temples and new architecture... These places are homes for people like us who live and work there. How would you want visitors to behave in your own home? Think about it. 1 There are many ways of doing this without sacrificing our own holiday.
Do your homework. 2 Guides will help you when you get to the site, but is that the best place to go? Is it popular only because the one-day tourist can see it easily or because it is really a worthwhile place to visit? You’d better check it out.
3 Don’t go to your hotels for meals. Walk around, even if in the streets closest to your hotel. Eat in local restaurants. Talk to the locals. Learn a few in the local language and use them. You will surely get a smile from the hotel staff and street sellers.
Help preserve the sites. Most of the sites you visit may be visited by millions of people a year, so care needs to be taken to allow others to enjoy them as well. Some of these monuments are so old and fragile that they are sensitive to the touch of hands or bags. 4 This way, you don’t encourage the use of those plastic bags that fly all over many sites.
And here’s the big one — good manners are nearly universal. 5 If that doesn’t sound like you, then give the world a break and stay home.
    A. Experience the place.
    B. Always have a cloth bag with you.
    C. Read up on the places you want to visit.
    D. Try to buy something from the local stores.
    E. A good tourist is polite, positive and eco-sensitive.
    F. We’ve cleaned up after ourselves and taken only good memories.
    G. If we are good tourists, wherever we go, we try to make it a little better because of our visit.

focus ... on ... 故填on。
    2. distance/distances 考查词性转换。 故填distance/distances。
故填is considered。
故填who。
It+be+adj.+for sb. to do sth. 故填to go。
故填a。

    八、
    Dear Jack,
How is everything going? I’m writing to tell you a piece of good news.
My parents and I are going to visit Guilin during the Spring Festival. I am so happy, because it has been such a long time since our family last went out together. I have to make some preparations. I will search some information about Guilin on the Internet, such as the famous tourist sites and the delicious food. And I will learn about other tourists’ experiences. I couldn’t wait to go there and experience the unique scenery and culture.
Would you like to come together? I’m sure we’ll have great fun.
    Looking forward to your reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
