    Teaching Aims

     

           Language goals

       Learn how to learn English.  

           Key words and phrases

       expression, discover, secret, grammar, fall in love with, look up, 

       because of, so that, sothat, as well

           Key sentences

       1. Why did Wei Fen find it difficult to learn English?

       2. I also realized I could get the meaning by listening for just the

         key words.

       3. My pronunciation improved as well by listening to the

         conversations in English movies.

     

    Teaching Difficulties

    1. Practice the target structure in reading comprehension.
    2. Understand and learn to use some English idioms.

    A tape recorder ,CAI or multimedia courseware

     

     

    Teaching Procedures

    Tips

    Step 1 Warm-up

     

           The T can play an English song and then ask Ss the question:

    Do you study English by listening to English songs?

           The T can play an English video, focus Ss attention to the

    conversation and pronunciation. Ask Ss the question:

    Do you study English by watching English movies?

           Then the T can make Ss talk about their English-learning methods . And make conversations as closed pairs:

    A: How do you study English?

    B: I study English by listening to tapes.

    by speaking with friends.

                   by reading a lot.

                  by writing English stories.

                  by asking the teacher for help.

                  by watching videos.

                  by keeping English diaries.

                  ...

           The T can elicit from Ss to find out what difficulties they have in learning English.

     

    Step 2 Presentation & Reading

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

           Before-reading 

    The T can ask Ss to talk about the title and the picture in 3a. The T can use these prompts:

    1.What do you think the text is about when you read the title?

    2.Whats the girl doing in the picture ?

    3.How do you think the girl is learning English, according to the picture?

    4.What can we learn from an English movie?

           While-reading

        Task 1 Skimming and Matching 

    The T make Ss skim the passage and choose the main idea of each paragraph so that Ss can grasp the main idea of the passage.Then the T can present the answers.

     

        Task 2 Scanning  

    The T can guide Ss to read each paragraph carefully and answer the questions about each paragraph. Focus Ss attention on the details and the key points. Then the T can present the answers.

    Task 3 Retelling

    The T can invite some Ss to retell one paragraph of the passage and then close the textbooks and fill in the blanks in PPT. Then the T can present the answers.

           3a  The T make Ss open the textbooks and read the questions in 3a in chorus and make sure Ss understand the meaning. Then ask Ss to read the passage again and find the answers to the three questions. The T can ask some Ss to share his/her answers in class and then present the correct answer.

       Answer:

    1. The teacher spoke so quickly that she could not understand her most of the time, and she was afraid to ask questions because of her poor pronunciation.
    2. She just hid behind her textbook and never said anything.
    3. For Wei Fen, listening to something interesting is the secret to language learning.

           3b  The T can guide Ss to recall the details of the passage . Then Ss do the exercises in 3b without looking at the passage. The T can present the correct answer .

       Answer: 1.body language, expressions

      2.key words  

    3.conversations   4.useful  5.dictionary

     

           After all the activities , the T can also introduce idioms to Ss.

    An idiom is a group of words with a special meaning. This meaning  may be quite different from the meanings of the individual words in the idiom. For example, its a piece of cake meansits very easy.Other idioms related to learning:

    Its easy as pie. (Meaning : Its very easy.)

    Its as easy as ABC. (Meaning : Its very easy.)

    The T can also point out that different languages have their own unique idioms, and ask for examples of some Chinese idioms. Emphasize that to learn a language well, we need to learn the idioms of that language.

     

    Step 3 Language points learning

     

           find+it(形式宾语)+adj. + to do sth. 发现做某事怎么样

           fall in love with后可接sb.sth.,表示动作,不可与时间段连用。

    be in love with表示“与......相爱”,强调状态,可与表示一段时间的状语连用。

           although conj. 虽然;尽管    引导让步状语从句,与though 同义,相当于even if even thoughalthough, though 不能与but 同用在一个句子中

           secret  n. 秘密;秘诀 adj. 秘密的;保密的

    (1) the secret to/ of……的秘诀

      (2) keep the secret =keep sth. to oneself 保守秘密

    (3) keep sth. secret 对某事保密(其中 secret 是形容词作宾语补足

    )

           look up(在词典或参考书中) 查阅;抬头看  动副短语, 宾语为代词时要放在look up之间。

           Some English idioms:

    Its a piece of cake. 小菜一碟。

    It serves you right. 你活该。

    Practice makes perfect. 熟能生巧

    Love me, love my dog. 爱屋及乌

    Actions speak louder than words. 行动胜于言辞

    No pain, no gain 不劳则无获

     

    The language points are for reference only.

    Step 5   Summary & Homework

     

     

    The homework can vary with the specific conditions.

           Summary  The T can encourage Ss to summarize the key points of this class to help Ss consolidate the knowledge.

           Homework:

        Read and recite the passage in 3a.

    Do the exercises in students book.    

    Teaching Reflection

    In this period, we should practice the target language more in reading and speaking activities. Besides, we can set some suitable tasks to help students do the reading comprehension in order to improve their reading skills. For high-level students, we can provide some extended reading tasks or materials for them.
