    Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students will

    be able to know the basic information and writing style of the author O. Henry.

    be able to understand the main features of a short story and analyze the basic elements of After Twenty Years, including setting, characters, plot and theme.

    be able to develop their logical thinking through inferring the original ending based on the given information.

    be able to cultivate their critical thinking through discussing the relation between friendship and duty.

    be able to understand the real meaning of friendship, internalize the moral awareness learned in the lesson and apply it into reality.

     

    Key points and / or difficult points

    Key points: (1) Analyze the literature elements of After Twenty Years (setting, characters, plot and theme). (2) Have a deeper understanding of friendship through discussing the relation between friendship and duty critically.

    Difficult points: (1) Identify and analyze the personalities of the characters based on supporting evidence in the text. (2) Think about their ideas on the dilemma between loyalty to friendship and devotion to duty.

The excerpts demonstrate the scene that while a policeman was walking on the beat, he met a man named Bob who was waiting for his old friend. They had a talk, in which Bob told the cop about the appointment made twenty years ago.

    While- reading

    1. Ss predict the story based on the picture and title, and then T plays the listening tape of the text and Ss check their prediction.

    To practice students ability in predicting, locating the specific information, analyzing and summarizing.

    (1)  Why couldnt Jimmy arrest Bob himself?

    (2)  Do you think that Jimmy did the right thing?

    Why or why not?

    (3)  Have you ever experienced similar situations in your daily life? How did you deal with them?

    Conclusion & Homework

    1. T makes a conclusion of the lesson.
    2. T assigns homework:

    (1)  Read the complete short story After Twenty Years.

    (2) Write down a summary of the whole story (around 200 words).

    To consolidate what the Ss have learned in this lesson.
