If you frequently travel for business,Staybridge Suites offer you a range of home comforts.Four recent visitors to Staybridge Suites explain why they booked, what they enjoyed and what made them want to return.
ClaireMetcalf
“The concept is great, but the staff are the ones who really make it,”she says.“It takes a lot of discipline to always be friendly, but the staff at Staybridge Suites do that. They genuinely care about you.”
AndrewRoberts
“One of the best things is having my own kitchen.I often end up working late and I don’t fancy eating in a restaurant on my own,so cooking for myself is a big drawcard.”
“The main thing for me is being able to cook and have my own little flat. The staff are amazing. It is great to be recognized by them,”he says.
PaulineRobinson
“What I love about it is the way that you are treated by the staff,” she says.“Some of the staff have been there all that time and they do look after you well.As a woman staying on my own,it is reassuring that they look out for you,and recently when I was poorly depressed they even brought things I needed to my room.”
RyanRuckledge
“The fully-equipped kitchen is great.I always have a one-bed apartment so I have a separate kitchen and dining room and I’m able to relax and cook some meals.Eating out can feel a bit much when you do it day in and day out—it makes you hate what you do—and I don’t want that.”
21.What attracts visitors to Staybridge Suites?
A.A separate dining room. B.A one-bed apartment.
C.A home from home. D.A lot of discipline.

Contrary to advertisements seen on television, read in magazines,or heard on the radio, spending a lot of money on a gift for a friend or loved one is totally unnecessary. Many people collect photos or mementos(纪念品) from special events, trips,or celebrations throughout their lives, throwing them in a drawer or cardboard box somewhere, intending to sort them out later. It seems, though, that“later” never comes. So,the next time you’re ready to buy a silk scarf or a pair of leather gloves for that special someone, consider sorting through that junk drawer filled with mementos and special photos.
For example, you can decorate an inexpensive picture frame with colourful buttons for your mother who is interested in sewing,or use tiny machine parts for your workshop-crazed brother.Inserting a special photo of you and that certain someone will create a gift that will be treasured forever.Shadow boxes are a wonderful way to display several objects from a single special event, such as a wedding.Take the original wedding invitation,a dried flower from the table centrepiece,or anything else that you can gather from the wedding, and display them in the box.
When you have many photos and mementos, make a photo album or scrapbook(剪贴簿)for a friend or family member.Today, the options for decorating your book are nearly endless.Entering a scrapbooking store can make your head spin.If this happens to you on your first scrapbooking visit, consider taking an introductory class, which many stores offer.Of course, you will have a much better idea of which scrapbook supplies to buy when the class ends.
Pictures or books that can be enjoyed over and over again are one-of-a-kind,original gifts. There is nothing like receiving a gift that comes straight from the heart.Such gifts help people recall happy times and strengthen the bond between the giver and the receiver.
24.What is the author’s attitude to gift advertisements?
A.Tolerant. B.Doubtful. C.Uncaring. D.Disapproving.
25.According to paragraph 2,shadow boxes .
A.are more expensive than picture frames
B.are usually made of cheap materials
C.can be used to show mementos
D.can be a precious wedding gift
26.The introductory class mentioned in paragraph 3 will help you learn how to .
A.take beautiful pictures
B.decorate your scrapbook
C.start a scrapbooking store
D.write a book on scrapbooking
27.Which would be the best title for the text?
A.A Gift from the Heart
B.A Special Photo Album
C.The First Scrapbooking Visit
D.The Treasured Shadow Boxes
C
We live in a world where the great majority of our attention is focused on what we can see.Whether we’re watching TV or working on a computer, sight has become the leading sense in modern life. But have we lost touch with our other senses?
Dr.Charles Spence of Oxford University thinks so.In his latest report,he argues that the use of all senses is central to health. However, sensory deprivation is common in modern life, and it is harmful to our health.
Indeed,we take it for granted that most information we use to understand our world comes through our eyes. But our other senses may be suffering.Consider the sense of touch.According to Dr.Spence, children may grow up “touch-hungry” because they are not getting enough tactile(触觉的) sensations. He suggests that we put more tactile objects into our schools to help develop this sense.
Dr.Spence may be exploring something deeper than our five senses.Life in the industrialized world is often far removed from nature, and it is no accident. For example, whether it is day or night no longer matters as much.Video arcades(电动游乐场) are open around the clock. In modern-day casinos, there are no clocks,no windows, just the ringing of slot machines and cold hard coins. The owners there want you to lose track of time, and to be cut off from reality.
Ironically, most popular video games are those modelled on real-life experiences. You can surf, snowboard or even fish! But again, you don’t feel the rise of the waves, the softness of snow,or the slipperiness of a freshly caught fish.
It is upsetting that on weekends we rush to crowded video arcades for unreal experiences. There’s nothing wrong with a little stimulation, but there’s more to life.We mustn’t forget to feed our other senses.Right now, they’re starving, and that may not be good for our health.
28.What does the underlined phrase “sensory deprivation” probably refer to?
A.The inadequate use of a sense.
B.The excessive dependence on one sense.
C.The loss of a sense related to poor health.
D.The failure for a sense to function properly.
29.In addition to the senses, what else is Dr.Spence probably exploring?
A.The development of industrialization.
B.The availability of various means of entertainment.
C.The disconnection between modern life and nature.
D.The comfort and ease of life brought by businesses.
30.What is ironical about video games?
A.People could be crazy about them.
B.They stop us from contacting the real world.
C.They enable people to do things they can’t do in reality.
D.People turn to the unreal world for the enjoyment of the real one.
31.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To call for a return to the full use of all senses.
B.To warn of the danger of modern entertainment.
C.To show the consequences of losing other senses.
D.To criticize the hunger for profits in the industrialized world.
D
“Tortillas (玉米粉圆饼).”The small wooden sign nailed onto a dead tree grabs my attention.I’m very wet from a rainstorm and I’m also starving.
Our local friends have dropped us off at this village. They won’t be back for several hours. We’ve walked up and down the village many times, slow steps helping us while away the time. With one hour left before we meet up with our friends, the promise of tortillas lifts my spirits.
Following a dirt path,we wind deeper into this village. We are now a mile from the heart of the village and the homes are farther and farther apart.“Do you really think there are tortillas at the end of this road?Or are we walking into a trap in which our kidneys(肾)will be harvested?”I nervously joke to my husband. His laughter calms my fears.
Hearing the laughter,a cow looks out of one of the doorways and moos (哞哞地叫) a warning to its owner.A multigenerational family is sitting on the dirt floor of the home;their heads turn to watch us go by.
I wave to the family as I pass by.An old woman waves back.Deciding we are not a threat, the other family members lose interest and turn away.
I’m about to give up on the thought of a warm tortilla when I spot another small sign in front of a small wooden house.A short woman is in the yard feeding three tiny piglets. In Spanish,my husband asks her about the tortillas. The woman shakes her head, not understanding his Spanish. So he falls back on the international language of gestures, miming(模仿) the act of making tortillas. Her eyes light up in understanding.
“Sylviaaaaaaaaaa!”she screams.A small girl,no older than 8,comes running from behind the house. Her mother explains, and Sylvia gets to work.
Back on the dirt path,I take my first bite.My taste buds (味蕾) dance with pleasure. Before we regain the main road,I decide that it would be a shame not to return for more.Despite the heavy rain that has picked up again,my husband agrees. We make our way back to Sylvia’s house.
32.While walking deep into the village, the author is .
A.not very tired B.pretty excited
C.kind of scared D.not very hungry
33.At the beginning,the multigenerational family .
A.are cautious of the couple
B.think the couple are interesting
C.think the couple are unfortunate

B.By speaking Spanish.
C.By using body language.
D.By asking Sylvia for help.
35.What does the author think of the tortillas?
A.They are excellent.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Gettingolder
No one really knows how and why people change as they get older. 36 Aging is a complex and varied process that varies in how it affects different people and organs. In fact, even in one person, different organ systems “age” at different rates.
At a certain point in our lives our body systems will begin to weaken. 37 It may become more difficult for us to see and hear. The slow change of aging causes our bodies to lose some of their ability to bounce back from disease and injury. In order to live longer,we have always tried to slow or stop this change that leads us toward the end of our lives.
38 A good diet plays an important role. The amount and the type of exercise we get are another two factors. 39 But scientists studying the aging problem want to know:why do people grow old? They hope that by studying the aging medical science they may be able to make the length of life longer.
40 Many consider the later part of life to be the best time for living.Physical activity may become less, but often we get better understanding of the world and ourselves.
What we consider the old age now may only be middle-aged some day soon. With so many advances in medical science happening so quickly, life length may one day be measured in centuries, rather than in years!
A.Our living condition is yet another.
B.Many factors decide our health.
C.Our strength may become weaker.
D.As for diet, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar.
E.There is nothing to be afraid of as the old age comes.
F.Symptoms include a lack of energy, slow reactions, insomnia and poor memory.
G.Also,no theory sufficiently explains all the changes of the aging process.

Since our twins began learning to walk,my wife and I have kept telling them that our sliding glass door is just a window. The 41 is obvious. If we 42 it is a door, they’ll want to go outside 43 .It will drive us crazy. The kids apparently know the 44 .But our insisting it’s 45 a window has kept them from 46 millions of requests to open the door.
I hate lying to the kids. One day they’ll 47 and discover that everything they’ve always known about windows is a 48 .
I wonder if 49 should always tell the truth no matter the 50 .I have a very strong 51 that the lie we’re telling is doing 52 damage to our children.Windows and doors have 53 metaphorical(比喻) meanings.I’m telling them they can’t open what they absolutely know is a door. What if later in 54 they come to a metaphorical door, like an opportunity(机会) of some sort, and 55 opening the door and taking the opportunity, they just 56 it and wonder,“What if it isn’t a door?”That is,“What if it isn’t a 57 opportunity?”
Maybe it’s an unreasonable fear. But the 58 is that I shouldn’t lie to my kids.I should just 59 repeatedly having to say,“No.We can’t go outside now.”Then when they come to other doors in life,be they real or metaphorical, they won’t 60 to open them and walk through.
