When I was about 4 years old,I decided to go to Disney World. For most young kids,it was a normal request, but I had cerebral palsy(脑瘫).Walking into anywhere, let alone a crowded place like Disney World was,to put it lightly,a tall order.Luckily,I had people in my corner to help me.Over the next three years,I worked with physical doctors, acquired a walker, and practiced walking, standing, and balance—all the skills that I would need to turn my goal into a reality.
I remember the feeling when my legs would protest doing any more work.Despitethis, everyone else told me I could do it,so I kept it up.It was all because of people like my parents, brothers, teachers, and doctors that I was able to grow so much, both physically and mentally, with them constantly pushing me to “walk on”,yet encouraging me whenever I needed it.
On June 9,2008,as I stood in the tunnel leading into Main Street,my dad asked me if I wanted any help.I instantly replied,“No!”and situated myself facing the end of the tunnel, feet planted firmly, heart most likely beating out of my chest. Then I went, walking ever so slowly at first, then gradually speeding up.Step,step,step,step,bump.Holding fast on to the handlebars,I gathered up all my strength, picked up my walker and straightened out, picking up my pace once again. It wasn’t too long before the cheering increased because I had made it to the end, where my mom was waiting with tears in her eyes and arms open wide ready to hug her son and tell him how proud she was.
Looking back on that experience,I realize something pretty thoughtful.Every once in a while, life will throw a few bumps in the road.Though it may set you back for a bit, don’t let it stop you.Pick yourself back up and finish. It’s worth it.Besides, there just might be someone there cheering you on along the way.
24.Which of the following best explains “a tall order” underlined in paragraph 1?
A.An easy decision. B.An available action.
C.A reasonable order. D.A challenging task.
25.Why does the author say he is lucky?
A.He eventually has his brain disease cured.
B.He constantly gets courage and support from others.
C.He is likely to do any kind of work in his later life.
D.He is naturally gifted in keeping balance on his own.
26.The author gives a vivid picture of himself in paragraph 3 to .
A.explain he was terrified to take the first step
B.describe he took pride in his mother and friends
C.show how he managed to walk by himself
D.prove how he understood to respect others
27.What can be the best title of the text?
A.Where Dreams Come True B.When Bad Fortune Falls
C.How I Value Friendship D.Why I Look Back on My Life

One spring morning many years ago,I had been prospecting for gold along Coho Creek in southeastern Alaska.Suddenly,no more than 20 paces away was a huge Alaskan timber wolf—caught in a trap.
From her appearance,I guessed she had been trapped for several days. She needed my help,Ithought. But if I tried to release her,she would turn aggressive to me.The wolf was clearly suffering. The trap’s steel jaws had imprisoned two toes. They were swollen and lacerated(割裂),but she wouldn’t lose the paw(爪子) if freed.Yet each time I moved closer, she would make a frightening growl. If I could only win her confidence,Ithought,it was her only hope.
Over the next few days,I divided my time between prospecting and trying to win the wolf’s trust.I talked gently with her, throwing her some meat.Gradually,I kept edging closer though I was careful to remain beyond the length of her trap chain.
At dusk on the fifth day,I delivered her dinner.Suddenly,I saw a slight wagging of her tail.I moved within the length of her chain. She remained still. As a towering man,my heart was in my mouth, though.Within her reach,I wrapped my blanket around myself and slowly settled onto the cold ground. It was long before I fell asleep.
The next morning,I slowly placed my hand on the wolf’s injured leg.Unexpectedly, she made no threatening move. Then I applied pressure, the trap sprang open, and the wolf pulled free.
My experience told me the wolf would vanish into the woods quickly.Butcautiously, she crept toward me and sniffed my hands and arms. This went against everything I’d ever heard about timber wolves.Yet,strangely,it all seemed so natural.
28.What happened to the timber wolf?
A.She was stuck in a trap. B.Her food ran out.
C.Her legs were swollen. D.She was caught in the author’s trap.
29.What was the only hope for the wolf to be saved?
    A.Some food. B.The author’s care.
C.Her trust in the author. D.Winning the author’s confidence.
30.Why was falling asleep difficult for the author?
A.He was too close to the wolf.
    B.The ground was too cold.
    C.The wolf remained still.
    D.The wolf wagged her tail.
31.How did the author feel about the outcome of the event?
    A.It was frightening and surprising.
    B.It was unexpected but natural.
    C.It was humorous and natural.
    D.It was terrifying but encouraging.

Monkeys seem to have a way with numbers.
A team of researchers trained three Rhesus monkeys to associate 26 clearly different symbols consisting of numbers and selective letters with 0-25 drops of water or juice as a reward. The researchers then tested how the monkeys combined—or added—the symbols to get the reward.
Here’s how Harvard Medical School scientist Margaret Livingstone, who led the team, described the experiment:In their cages the monkeys were provided with touch screens. On one part of the screen,a symbol would appear, and on the other side two symbols inside a circle were shown.Forexample, the number 7 would flash on one side of the screen and the other end would have 9 and 8.If the monkeys touched the left side of the screen they would be rewarded with seven drops of water or juice;if they went for the circle, they would be rewarded with the sum of the numbers—17 in this example.
After running hundreds of tests, the researchers noted that the monkeys would go for the higher values more than half the time, indicating that they were performing a calculation, not just memorizing the value of each combination.
When the team examined the results of the experiment more closely, they noticed that the monkeys tended to underestimate(低估)a sum compared with a single symbol when the two were close in value—sometimes choosing, forexample,a 13 over the sum of 8 and 6.The underestimation was systematic:When adding two numbers, the monkeys always paid attention to the larger of the two,and then added only a fraction(小部分)of the smaller number to it.
“This indicates that there is a certain way quantity is represented in their brains,”Dr.Livingstonesays.“But in this experiment what they’re doing is paying more attention to the big number than the little one.”
32.What did the researchers do to the monkeys before testing them?
A.They fed them. B.They named them.
C.They trained them. D.They measured them.
33.How did the monkeys get their reward in the experiment?
    A.By drawing a circle. B.By touching a screen.
C.By watching videos. D.By mixing two drinks.
34.What did Livingstone’s team find about the monkeys?
    A.They could perform basic addition.
    B.They could understand simple words.
    C.They could memorize numbers easily.
D.They could hold their attention for long.
35.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
    A.Entertainment. B.Health.
    C.Education. D.Science.

    Thewriter’sblock
Whatever it is you have to write, the idea of a blank page—or screen—can be very discouraging. Here are a few easy tips to help you overcome your writer’s block.
    1.Thinkbeforeyouwrite.
Before you actually start, think about what you want to say,why you want to say it and who you are going to say it to.The most important question to ask is:what response do I want to get? 36 It may be a memo(备忘录)at work.In that case, your main aim is that your reader will be able to get the most important information quickly.
    2.Keepitshortandtothepoint.
Use short, simplesentences, written for maximum effect.Make sure that everything you say is relevant to your main aim or message. If you can’t,it’s probably because you’re not really sure of exactly what you want to say. 37
    3.Avoidrepetition.
You may feel that a point needs stressing, and that you therefore want to repeat it just to make sure it sinks in.Don’t.It’s much better to make sure you express yourself clearly and simply the first time around. 38
    4.Chooseyourstylecarefully.
This takes us back to the first point. 39 If you know them personally, then you’ll also know how best to write to them.Make sure your style reflects both your relationship with your readers and your attitude to what you’re writing. If you’re writing to an anonymous(不知姓名的)audience, keep your style neutral(中立的).Remember that first impressions are vital. 40 And of course, the wrong choice can do quite the opposite!
    A.Remember your readers!
B.Try reading your text aloud to yourself.
C.It’ll make your text much easier to process.
    D.And if you don’t know,your readers definitely won’t!
E.The answer to that obviously depends on what you’re writing.
F.The right choice of words and tone can help you get off to a great start.
G.If something really needs to be said again,at least find a different way to do so.

W:Yes.Well, the first one is to St.Ives.That’s on February 13th and we will have only 16 places available because we’re going by minibus. That’s a whole day in town with the optional extra of visiting the Hepworth Museum.
    M:That sounds good.
W:And then there’s a London trip on the 16th of February. We will be taking a medium-sized coach so there will be 45 places on that, and the optional extra is the Tower of London.
    M:Oh,I’ve already been there.
W:After that is Bristol on the 3rd of March. That’s in a different minibus with 18 places available.Oh,and the optional extra is to visit the S.S. Great Britain.
    M:Okay.
W:We’re going to Salisbury on the 18th of March. That’s always a popular one because the optional extra is Stonehenge,so we’re taking the large coach with 50 seats.
    M:Oh,good.
W:And then the last one is to Bath on the 23rd of March.
    M:Ohyes.Is Bath the Roman city?
    W:Yes,that’sright,and that’s in the 16-seat minibus.
    M:And where’s the optional visit?
W:It’s to the American Museum, well worth a visit.
M:Okay, that’s great—and thanks for all that.
    W:My pleasure.
    (Text10)
We’re grateful that the Committee has invited students to give some suggestions about the design for the new Union building. So,the result was as follows.Firstly, regarding the matter of the site,we presented the three options that you have proposed. One:in the city center, near the Faculty of Education;two:in the suburbs of the city, near the park, andthree:out of town, near the campus. We asked students to cite reasons for and against these three sites.Site One was unpopular because of traffic and parking problems.Site Two had a number of supporters because it was close to most lecture rooms. And Site Three was the most popular because of access from living accommodations.
Our second area of interest was the facilities:there was no interest in having a library, but one option seemed to be a reading room instead. We would like the current table-games room to be replaced with a small gym and, ifpossible,a small swimming pool—of course Olympic-sized!There were a large number of students in favour of a travel agency. However, there was much disagreement about whether to build a drama theatre.Over sixty percent of the participants were strongly against it,claiming it’s a waste of money.
故选A项。
Yet,strangely,itallseemedsonatural.”
    37.D D项与上文的“Ifyoucan’t,it’sprobablybecauseyou’renotreallysureofexactlywhatyouwanttosay.”
    51.A 根据上段中的“I’veneverseenhimbefore.”

故填what。
故填in。

    MyWeekend
Last weekend,my classmates and I went to a farm to pick grapes. The grape farm is located at the foot of a hill, where lies a small river. We were stuck by the beauty of the scenery.
Grapes grown on this farm were big and sweet. We couldn’t help eating grapes while picking them,as we were told the grapes hadn’t been treated with pesticides.Meanwhile, several girls sang some sweet songs, which made us feel less exhausted.
On the way back home,we were worn out. However,we hoped we could have chances to come back again, because physical labor not only exercises our body, but also makes us cherish the fruits of labor.
