Fahim was only 11 years old when he first met Alberto Cairo in 1993 in a hospital in Kabul, the Afghan capital. At the time, Kabul was caught in a bloody civil war. After his left leg was blown off, Fahim went to the hospital to seek treatment. This is a hospital run by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). There, he met Alberto Cairo, who arrived in Kabul in 1990.
Over the next three decades, Fahim has made countless trips to the hospital. During those visits, the compassionate(慈悲的) treatment from Cairo deeply moved him. “He is a friend of the Afghan people,” Fahim said of Cairo. When Fahim decided to study medicine, it was Cairo who kept encouraging him. Today, Fahim works as a nurse and an anesthetist(麻醉师) in a hospital in Afghanistan.
Fahim is only one example of what Cairo leaves behind in Kabul, the city that has become his home for the past 30 years.
For Cairo, the job as a doctor came by chance. “I was a teenager in Italy when I saw a man doing something that seemed so simple and so helpful: helping people to walk. That moment left a strong impression on me. I eventually left my training as a lawyer behind to choose medicine.”
In his early years in Afghanistan, Cairo was shocked by the great number of patients seeking treatment for wounds caused by the war. Each year, the rehabilitation centres(康复中心) treat more than 13,000 new patients—most of whom, like Fahim, require lifetime treatment.
At first, the ICRC’s treatment centre only focused on war sufferers, but Cairo expanded its treatment to include all people with disabilities in the country. He made two decisions that have left a lasting impact. One was to employ former patients to work in the treatment centre. The second was to organize an athletic group for people with disabilities.
    24. When did Fahim first meet Cairo?
    A. When he became a nurse. B. Before civil war broke out.
    C. When he started to learn medicine. D. When Cairo treated his leg in a hospital.
    25. What inspired Cairo to become a doctor?
    A. The cruelty of war. B. Fahim’s experience.
    C. His training as a lawyer. D. A scene a man helped others.
    26. Which of the following can best describe Cairo?
    A. Caring. B. Determined. C. Outgoing. D. Demanding.
    27. What kind of patients were mainly treated in the ICRC’s treatment centre at first?
    A. People with disabilities. B. People wounded in the war.
    C. People with mental illnesses. D. People needing lifetime treatment.
    C
Smart Highway is a creative idea for smart roads of tomorrow: Smart Highway is the result of the teamwork between builder and developer Heijmans and designer Daan Roosegaarde.
Among them, Glowing Lines, the world’s first light-emitting(发光的) highway, is a safe and environment-friendly road. The site of the pilot project is a part of the N329 Highway in Oss, located in the province of Noord-Brabant, the Netherlands.
The road was built by Heijmans and was designed by Daan Roosegaarde, using light- emitting paints. The paints absorb ultraviolet light(紫外线) during the day and give it off for up to 10 hours at night. Solar energy panels(太阳能板) or other sources of power can provide energy to make sure that the road continues to provide light as required, despite weather or daylight hours.
The Van Gogh-Roosegaarde bicycle path is a creative path, inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night and designed by Daan Roosegaarde. There are thousands of light-emitting stones, giving visitors an experience of poetry and design. The path gets energy at daytime and emits light during the night. It is supported by LED light to make sure of safety, quality and light during the whole night. Art and technology merge in this new, public view. The bicycle path is 600 metres long and is part of the Van Gogh cycling path.
The Van Gogh-Roosegaarde bicycle path is set up as a cultural and enjoyable road, based on the light-emitting technologies developed for the Smart Highway. Riding a bicycle at this site is a wonderful experience. Furthermore, the path is lit up in such an environment-friendly way without destroying the ecology. As a tourist attraction, the bicycle path also offers economic added value to the Eindhoven region: Visitors can experience the pathway in the evening and will likely stay in the region longer.
    28. What can we know about the Glowing Lines?
    A. It brings light pollution to the environment.
    B. It cannot provide light continuously in bad weather.
    C. It’s the only highway in the world which can emit light.
    D. It’s the result of the teamwork among builders, developers and designers.
    29. What does the underlined word “merge” in paragraph4mean?
    A. Change. B. Appear. C. Mix together. D. Take over.
    30. What can we infer about the Van Gogh-Roosegaarde bicycle path from the last paragraph?
    A. It should be built in other cities. B. It only attracts cyclists to Eindhoven.
    C. Its light has bad effects on ecology. D. It can promote the local economy.
    31. What is the purpose of this text?
    A. To introduce two smart roads.
    B. To tell us what future roads are like.
    C. To show the history of the road development.
    D. To stress the high technology of the Netherlands.
    D
A scientist has set out to prove that flowers can hear everything around them, and she was right, She looked at the flowers of the evening primrose(夜来香) and used sound tests to prove they replied to the sound of bees’ wings by increasing the amount of the sugar in their nectar(花蜜).
Thinking that the world is completely filled with sounds. Lilach Hadany, who teaches at the University of Tel Aviv, felt it wouldn’t make any sense for flowers to pay no attention to them. In her opinion, any living creature must make use of all its senses to survive until it can reproduce. To prove her guess, Hadany and her team gave the flowers of the evening primrose five sound tests, including three different computer-produced frequencies, silence and the recording of a bee’s wing beats.
The study shows that silence had no effect on the flower. However, with the extremely low frequency and the bee’s wing beats, the flower spent the following three minutes increasing the sugar content in its nectar by 17%-20%, an obviously clear suggestion that Hadany’s guess was right.
Hadany’s team found that pollinators(传粉者) were nine times more likely to choose to visit a flower that had been visited by another pollinator within the last six minutes, showing how valuable that small increase in sugar could be for the flower’s chances of reproduction.
“We were quite surprised when we found out that it actually worked,” Hadany said. “But after repeating it in other situations, in different seasons, and with flowers grown both indoors and outdoors, we feel very confident in the result.” This has helped open up a relatively new field of study-the study of flowers’ relations with sound.
    32. Which of the following is TRUE about sound tests?
    A. The silence had a big effect on the flower.
    B. The flower responded positively to the bee’s wing beats.
    C. The extremely high frequency was good for the flower.
    D. They included five different computer-produced frequencies.
    33. What did the researchers find about flowers with more nectar?
    A. They can increase the period of flowering time.
    B. They can increase the flower size.
    C. They are more likely to be visited by pollinators.
    D. They are able to survive in difficult situations.
    34. What’s Hadany’s attitude to their findings?
    A. Doubtful. B. Dissatisfied. C. Certain. D. Regretful.
    35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
    A. Flowers’ Relations with Sound
    B. Flowers Can Hear Bees
    C. Living Creatures Use All Their Senses to Survive
    D. Living Creatures Like Different Sounds

Anger is best expressed physically, especially if you have a lot of repressed anger to process. __39__ Some good ways to express anger include punching pillows, hitting the ground with a baseball bat, popping balloons or going for a walk.
    ●Cry out your pain.

    One possible version:
    Dear Mike.
I am writing to express my sincere thanks for the book Sentences for Instant Use you gave me on my birthday.
It has helped improve my English greatly. Firstly, the sentences in the book are practical and easy to remember. Besides, it is quite handy to carry and use because of its small size. More importantly, I can use it to communicate with foreigners, which improves my spoken English and builds up my confidence.
Thanks again for your gift. By the way, how is your Chinese learning going? I am looking forward to talking with you in Chinese soon.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    (Text 1)
    M: Iced coffee?
W: No, I have a stomachache when taking a cold drink. A cup of hot black coffee would be fine.
    (Text 2)
W: I don’t really like the painting. It’s not my cup of tea. Too modern and unusual.
M: But look at the colours and forms. It’s very imaginative.
W: Maybe. I prefer a painting showing a view of the countryside.
    (Text 3)
M: I can’t understand why my friend isn't here yet. We agreed to meet at 10: 30. Do you think we should try to call her or pick her up?
W: She is probably getting in a traffic jam. Let’s give her a few more minutes.
    (Text 4)
M: I got full marks in my maths exam last week. You know I’ve spent much time studying.
W: Congratulations! You must be excited.
M: Yes, so I couldn’t sleep last night. Then I told my friends about the good news.
    (Text 5)
W: Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me how to get to Town Cinema?
M: I wish I could. I’ve heard about that place, but I just moved here and I'm lost myself.
    (Text 6)
M: I’m wondering if it’s going to be fine this afternoon.
    W: So what?
M: The sports meet! It’s fixed at 2: 00, but the fog. . You can only see a short distance.
W: But don’t you see the wind is beginning to lift it up? I think it will be fine.
M: I hope so. If not, we should put off the sports meet till next Monday.
W: Next Monday? I have an appointment with a doctor that day.
M: Why not change the time to tomorrow?
W: I’ll call the doctor right now.
    (Text 7)
W: Hey, Chen Lei! Who is the tall man over there?
M: The one with short curly hair?
W: Yeah. Look! He is talking to a girl with glasses.
M: Oh, that’s Peter. He is the new exchange student in our school.
W: Really? What about his family?
M: His mother is a Chinese and his father is from France. But they live in Canada now.
W: That’s cool. Have you ever talked to him?
M: Yeah, a few times. He speaks English very well. He likes music, and he once played the guitar in the school band. He is going to spend some time on Chinese paintings. He is pretty outgoing and funny.
    (Text 8)
W: Hey, you don’t look so well.
M: I only got two hours of sleep last night. I went to bed at four in the morning and got up at six.
W: What? You need to sleep more than that.
M: I know, but I have to finish the paper for my American history class. I must hand it in the day after tomorrow. And I have to take an English literature exam in three days.
W: But if you’re too tired, you won't be able to think properly.
M: You’re right. I’ve hardly written anything since nine.
W: Why don’t you take a nap? It’s only eleven in the morning. You’ll have enough time to complete your paper.
M: But there’s an art history class at two.
W: Maybe you can ask the teacher for leave. I’ll be attending it. You can borrow my notes tomorrow.
    M: Oh, that’s great.
    (Text 9)
M: Anna, have you ever thought about what you want to do in the future?
W: Certainly. I’ve always wanted to do something in nursing to help others.
M: Besides college education, I think you need to get some hands-on experience. Why don’t you join the CAN programme? It’s mainly for high school students in our city. You can study nursing and receive training in a real medical environment.
W: That’s really great. When does the course take place?
M: It takes place after school every day on school days. Students spend 88 hours in the classroom and train in the field for 60 hours. They learn at least 20 skills that nurses need daily.
W: I really want to go. Where does the training programme take place?
M: Inside Ingleside at King Farm, a community for retired people. You can ask my aunt Linda for more information if you want to go.
W: Does she work there? I remember your aunt teaches at a college.
M: That’s true. But she also leads the CNA programme. She can tell you everything about the programme. She’ll come and visit my family tonight. Why not come too?W: That’s a good idea.
    (Text 10)
M: About 10 years ago, I started to learn to play the piano on pieces of paper, because my mum was out of work and we had no extra money to buy a piano or pay for the lessons I needed. I made a keyboard out of paper. I played on the paper keyboard guided by sounds. I was hearing on the computer. But after a while, I just began to hear those notes in my head. I used the paper piano between Grade I and Grade 5. My mum saw I was so determined, so she borrowed money from family and friends to pay for a real keyboard for me. But I still had to practise on real pianos. So I would often go to local houses who had pianos and I was allowed to practise for an hour once a week. Now I’m an award-winning pianist and musician. I don’t think there’s been ever greater challenge than playing on pieces of paper. I’m determined to face any challenges that come my way now.
