For the past three decades, Richard Sears, 71, has been focusing on one thing: Chinese culture.

His interest in Chinese language goes back to 1972, when he was a university student. “I had checked across Canada and the US. And I was on my way to Africa,” he says. “I wanted to see the world. But then I realized only 7 percent of the world speaks English as a mother tongue. So I wanted to know what it was like to speak another language.” Richard bought a one-way ticket to China to learn Chinese. At that time Richard supported himself by teaching English.

Two years later, he returned to the US to finish his study. He became a researcher after graduation and later worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley. In 1981 he lost his job. He even had to work on a night job as a guard for several years so that he could study Chinese at night and get some rest during the day. “I didn’t earn much, but at least I had time to read Chinese books.” he says. At 40, he was already pretty fluent in Chinese. In 1994 Richard suffered a heart attack. “I did not know if I would live another hour.” he says. “When I finally recovered, I had to think about my life, I had to plan as if I was going to die maybe in a year. So I decided to better know about Chinese with more efforts.”

Last September, Richard set up his studio in Nanjing as part of the local authority ’s plan to promote cultural services. The studio focuses on telling stories of Chinese culture and character origins. They have made more than 60 such videos in both English and Chinese.

“We also want to make videos with a high educational value both for Chinese and foreign learners of Chinese characters. There will be a large number of videos, showing the origins of modern and traditional Chinese characters.” Richard says.

    24. When did Richard Sears start to learn Chinese?

    A. In 1971. B. In 1972. C. In 1981. D. In 1994.

    25. How did Richard Sears earn a living while learning Chinese in China?

    A. By teaching English.  B. By developing software.

    C. By his friends’ support.  D. By working as a guard.

    26. What can we say about Richard Sears’ studio?

    A. It has posted less than 60 videos in English. B. It aims to promote Chinese culture.

    C. It’s mainly loved by Chinese speakers. D. It was established by the local government.

    27. Which of the following best describes Richard Sears?

    A. Humorous. B. Generous. C. Helpful. D. Determined.

    C

People have used pigeons to carry messages to one another for hundreds of years. In fact, pigeons were a common way to send messages right up through World War II.

In 1815, English troops were fighting Napoleon’s forces in France, and the English were believed to be losing. A financial panic swept over London. Government bonds(债券)were offered at low prices. Few people noticed that Nathan Rothschild, an English banker, was snapping up these bonds when everyone else was trying to sell them. A few days later, London learned the truth: the Duke of Wellington had defeated Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo. The value of the bonds soared (暴涨), and Rothschild became wealthy…all because his pigeons had brought him news of the victory before anyone else knew of it.

Carrier pigeons were used by countries in both World War I and World War II. Not only were the birds often the fastest, most reliable way to send messages, they could also be used to reach soldiers far behind enemy lines, where radios and field telephone lines were useless. Since they could easily be released from airplanes or ships, every branch of the armed services used the birds.

Carrying messages could be a dangerous job. Some pigeons performed with such bravery that they became famous and were even awarded medals. The most famous pigeon of all may have been Cher Ami. Stationed in France during World War I, he carried twelve important messages for American forces. On his last mission, though wounded, he carried a message that saved the lives of 194 American soldiers. For his amazing service, he was awarded the French “Croix de Guerre.”

Today, modern communication methods can carry information from one place to another hundreds of times faster than a pigeon could do it. However, few people would argue with the fact that carrier pigeons—especially those that served in the military—have earned their place in history.

    28. Nathan Rothschild made his fortune by ________.

    A. relying on messages sent to him by carrier pigeons B. predicting successfully the result of the battle

    C. his experience and a good knowledge of bonds D. his ability to tell right from wrong

    29. What does “snapping up” mean in the second paragraph?

    A. Giving away. B. Destroying. C. Throwing out. D. Buying.

    30. The author provides dates and numbers throughout this text in order to ________.

    A. avoid mixing up the readers’ minds when reading for information

    B. prove that carrier pigeons are more important in modern times than in the past

    C. show the influence of carrier pigeons at important points in history

    D. explain the causes and effects of world events

    31. What is the author’s attitude towards carrier pigeons?

    A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Positive. D. Unconcerned.

    D

A scientist locked himself in a small air-tight plastic tent with 200 plants to see if they could change CO2 into oxygen (氧气) fast enough to keep him alive.

Kurtis Baute locked himself in a 3m by 3m tent in his brother’s backyard in British Columbia, Canada. He hoped to find out if by surrounding himself with plants, the CO2 he breathed out could be changed into oxygen to allow him to survive in the locked tent for at least three days.

Unfortunately, he had to give up the experiment after only 15 hours, as CO2 levels reached a dangerous point where he risked suffering brain damage. “I could probably survive in the tent for three days,” Baute wrote on his website. “But my goal is not to just ‘not die’. My goal is to end this project without developing brain damage or just generally causing lasting harm to my body. But as it turns out, that’s exactly what he risked as the 200 plants he took with him into the tent couldn’t meet his needs. Clearly, a cloudy sky prevented them from receiving all the sunlight they needed to perform photosynthesis (光合作用), so they couldn’t recycle CO2 fast enough.

“Plants are great at taking in CO2 and they love it. Since it wasn’t a bright and sunny day, they weren’t getting the light they needed, which meant CO2 just kept rising. I had to give up the experiment as that continued.” the young experimenter said. 15 hours into the experiment, Baute reached the set danger point and then ended this experiment. Still, he called the experiment a “huge success” as his main goal was actually the terrible effects of climate change and CO2 emissions.

“The conclusion about my experiment is that if CO2 is too high, I’ll escape, which is just everyday experiences for many people on this planet. Everyone deserves clean air, but not everyone has it,” he wrote.

    32. Why did Kurtis Baute stay in the tent for only 15 hours?

    A. The tent is too small for him to stay too long. B. The environment in the tent is dangerous for him.

    C. CO2 in the tent couldn’t be changed into oxygen. D. He couldn’t survive in the locked tent any longer.

    33. What made it hard for the 200 plants to satisfy Kurtis Baute’s needs?

    A. His health condition. B. His wrong decision.  C. Too much CO2.  D. The cloudy weather.

    34. What does Kurtis think of the result of the experiment?

    A. Disappointing. B. Surprising. C. Satisfying. D. Interesting.

    35. What may be the best title for the text?

    A. A test to show the importance of clean air B. Surviving in the tent

    C. The set danger point  D. Making people know the use of plants

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

4 Study Habits You Should Be Practising

With exams, essays, projects, and many deadlines for different things, effective (有效的) study habits are necessary.  36   If you are in need of a bit of an improvement, keep reading for the top four study habits that you should be practicing.

    1. Make and use flashcards.

37   By using flashcards with a question on one side and the answer on the other, you will force your brain to recall the necessary information. Even if you struggle a bit with a card, you will still be actively revising the necessary material.

    2. Revise, revise, revise!

Many students put off studying until just before the exam, with the more hardworking students giving themselves a week or two before a test.   38   It’s best to revise the information a little bit every day, so that you are not upset when a test comes around.

    3.   39

One of the most effective—and the most fun—methods of studying is to watch related lectures and videos in order to get more material. Watch documentaries or videos on YouTube and educational websites. You may be surprised at how much you can learn from videos, and just how much information is available online.

    4. Re-write your notes.

Studies have shown that writing information out by hand increases your ability to remember the material. This makes the recall go hand- in-hand with muscle memory.   40

These are the four most effective study habits, and something all successful students do. Make sure you are on top of your game by following these study methods!

    A. Watch related lectures and videos.

    B. One method of revising is to make a mind-map.

    C. Use these graded tests to create a new practice test.

    D. Having these great study habits can make things easier.

    E. However, it’s actually an ineffective method of preparing and studying.

    F. Flashcards are designed to improve active memory recall of information.

    G. You will be able to picture your written notes when you are taking the exam.

    Dear boys and girls,

I’m very honored to express my opinion on environment protection. The first thing I want to stress is that the environment is becoming worse and worse with the development of modern industry. Therefore, it’s high time that some immediate measures should be taken to protect our home—the Earth, or we would have nowhere to live. Moreover, we as high school students can protect our environment by living a different life.

First of all, do turn off lights and other switches when not using them to save electricity. Additionally, if we go out, we should walk, ride or take public transport instead of driving private cars. Last but not the least, reusing paper and bottles in our daily life is also highly recommended.

Let’s start with small things now to make our environment better and better! Only in this way can we live in a more beautiful world!

    Thanks for listening!
