Guided reading
Hiram Bingham (1875–1956) was an American histrian wh wrked at Yale University. Bingham led three expeditins t Peru, and he has been credited with the discvery f Machu Picchu, the “lst city f the Incas”. This excerpt is adapted frm a bk that he wrte abut his experiences, and as such, it is a travel accunt written in a traditinal style. At this pint in the narrative, the members f the Yale Peruvian Expeditin are just abut t stumble upn the ruins f the legendary Incan city.
Bingham uses suggestive descriptins t set the scene and give the reader a feel f what it was like t arrive at Machu Picchu fr the first time.
As is cmmn in literary writing, Bingham emplys certain narrative techniques t keep the reader engaged. In this adapted excerpt, the phrase “Withut the slightest expectatin f finding anything ...” indicates that smething unusual will indeed be fund. Bingham als emphasizes sudden shifts in the stry with expressins such as “Hardly had we ... when ...” and “suddenly fund myself in ...” When telling a stry, the narratr will typically use expressins like these t give hints abut what is abut t happen, and build up a sense f anticipatin. Bingham als uses inversin t make place descriptins mre interesting: “Immediately in frnt ... was a great cliff rising 2,000 feet straight up.”; “..., that here were mst extrardinary and interesting ruins.”
Again, this is a technique that heightens anticipatin, as the imprtant piece f infrmatin cmes at the end f the statement. Bingham culd have written “There was a great cliff in frnt f us”, but that wuld make the descriptin rdinary and less dramatic.
