Project
I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. research a foreign country through cooperation and exploration;
2. make a travel brochure highlighting some special aspect(s) of the chosen country;
3. present their travel brochure on a foreign country;
3. evaluate and comment on each other’s travel brochure.
II. Key competence focus
Make a travel brochure and give an oral presentation.
III. Predicted area of difficulty
Figure out the highlights of the chosen country and present them fully.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
- T introduces travel brochures to Ss
T: Good morning/ afternoon boys and girls, I have brought something special for each group of you today. Have a look and tell me what it is.
Ss: A small book/ magazine ...
T: What is it about?
Ss: Travel/ Tourism...
T: Actually, these small books are travel brochures from a travel agency. A travel brochure is a small, thin book or magazine usually containing pictures and information about travelling in a place.
- T sets the goal of this class
T: What’s more, this travel agency plans to hold a competition about travel brochures on foreign countries. So today we will learn to make one .
【设计意图:教师课前准备好一些旅游手册,分发给各小组,供学生翻看学习,利用实物直观快捷地导入课堂。接着,利用旅行社举办旅行手册比赛为本节课设定一个真实的任务。】
Step 2 Deciding on the country to research
- T asks Ss to have a discussion and choose a foreign country to research.
- T asks Ss to have a discussion and decide what topics they want to contain in their travel brochure.
● Basic information (location, population, natural environment, etc.)
● History
● Culture
● Tourist attractions
● Specialties (food, culture products, etc.)

【设计意图:各小组通过讨论确定要研究的国家以及可能要寻找哪些方面的信息。本环节旨在训练学生在较短时间内收集和统一全体成员的意见,达成一致。】
Step 3 The analysis of the example
- T asks Ss to go through the example quickly and answer the following questions.
(Q1)T: What impresses you most after the first glance? And why?
S: The title/ pictures/design…
(Q2) T: What do the title and pictures focus on?
S: The (natural) beauty of Iceland/…
- T asks Ss to read the example again and answer the following questions.
Q1: What’s the main idea of each paragraph?
Paragraph 1 Basic information
Paragraph 2 Tourist attractions
Paragraph 3 Specialties
Q2: What are the tourist attractions for nature lovers mentioned in the brochure?
Breathtaking mountains, awesome glaciers, crashing waterfalls, black sand beaches, active volcanoes, natural hot springs,colourful symphony of the Northern lights, and native wildlife.
Q3: How does the author describe the tourist attractions?
By using various adjectives.
Q4: What makes a successful travel brochure?
Special highlights, vivid language, eye-catching pictures, beautiful layout,ect..
【设计意图:在学生自己动手制作旅游手册之前,教师引导学生学习书上的范例,给学生提供示范指导。学生先快速浏览范例,说出令其印象深刻的地方,引导学生关注旅游手册的组成要素和整体设计,并根据图片和标题猜测手册的重点介绍方面。接着,让学生再读,找出每个段落的大意和旅游景点,让学生把握文章结构并感知生动的描述性语言。最后,教师引导学生总结出成功的旅游手册具备的特点,为学生自己动手制作手册提供指导。】
Step 4 Task division
T asks Ss to discuss in groups to think about all the work that needs to be done and how to divide the work properly among the group members. The tasks include:
● Collect materials (pictures and texts).
● Organize the information according to different topics
● Design a travel brochure
● Polish the travel brochure
● Make a presentation
【设计意图:这一步骤由各小组讨论完成,商议组员如何分工合作,将一项比较大的项目分解成更具操作性的小任务,提高组员的积极性和参与度。需要说明的是,Project 这堂课需要学生走出课堂,学以致用,迁移创新,所以本课要完成的步骤分成两个阶段,到Step 4 为止属于第一阶段。之后学生利用课后时间合作完成任务,制作出他们的旅游手册。】
Step 5 Presentation and assessment
- T asks each group to display their travel brochure on the blackboard and choose one member to present it orally. When doing the presentation, they should pay attention to the following points:
● Speak clearly and confidently.
● Make eye contact with the audience.
● Keep your facial expressions relaxed and friendly.
● Talk at a proper speed and pause when it is necessary to give your audience time to think about what you have said.
- T asks Ss to assess other groups’ work and give points according to every team’s performance (10 points in total). They can make comments and give some suggestions as well.

【设计意图:这是Project 的第二阶段——在课堂上展示旅游小册子(课下准备好, 课上展示)。通过小组展示和相互评价以及给出建议,让学生参与课堂评价,实现课堂评价多样化,提高学生的合作能力与批判性思维,从而更好地达成本堂课的教学目标。另外学生也能发现自己在某些方面的不足,以便获得提升,同时这也有助于学生英语语言输出能力和公众表现力。】
V. Homework
1. Make improvements to the travel brochure of your group according to your classmates’ comments and suggestions.
2. Put your group’s travel brochure on the classroom wall and appreciate the works of other groups.
