    Lizzie-s diary from Antarctica (南极洲)

    Day 3: Tuesday   December 2

We planned to go to Rothera that morning. We’d be staying there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all.

We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather

It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 10:30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn’t be able to fly the whole day.

    Day 4: Wednesday   December 3

After waking up in the Antarctic for the first time today I can understand why everybody who comes here falls in love with the place. It is really beautiful. We’re staying at Rothera Survey base with mountains of ice all around. It s about minus 20C today, which for me is very cold, but the regulars(常客) here are often seen walking around in T-shirts!

    Day 5: Thursday December 4

I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here in the Antarctic. I’m told it’s a bit colder today, about minus 50C , but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the bas have to do a special training course before we're allowed to go off base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill.

    Day 7: Saturday December 6

Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket). The most amazing thing about this place is how the scenery ( ) changes every day. At first, I thought I was going mad. I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there yesterday.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving—slowly thankfully!

    30. Lizzie sat outside wearing a jacket on_______.

       A. Tuesday         B. Wednesday        C. Thursday    D. Saturday

    31. What could stop Lizzie from leaving Stanley for Rothera?

         A. Strong winds.     B. Thick clouds.

     C. Mountains of ice.   D. Low temperatures.

    32. How did Lizzie feel during her stay in the Antarctic?

       A. Afraid.      B. Nervous.      C. Amazed.    D. Bored.

    33. What impressed Lizzie most about Rothera was that _______.

    A. people walked around in T-shirts     B. there was a special training course

    C. the weather was sometimes warm    D. the scenery changed every day

                                        C.

We often reach a point in our life when we should be ready for change that will help us unlock our self-improvement power However there's always something staring at us right under our nose but we don't see it The only time we think of unlocking our self-improvement power is when everything gets worst

When do we realize that we need to change diets When none of our shirts and jeans would fit us. When do we stop eating candies and chocolates When all of our teeth have fallen off. When do we realize that we need to stop smoking When our lungs have gone bad. We see the warning signs and signals when things get rough and difficult

The only time most of us ever learn about unlocking our self-improvement power is when the whole world is falling apart. We think and feel this way because it is not easy to change, but change becomes more painful when we ignore itChange will happen, like it or hate it At one point or another. We are all going to finally unlock our self-improvement power not because the world says so , but because we realize it's for our own good

Happy people don't just accept change they embrace itUnlocking our self-improvement power means unlocking ourselves out of the box of thought that is just the way we are It is such a poor excuse for people who fear change

Jane always tells everyone that she doesn't have the courage to be around groups of people. She heard her family tell the same things about her to other people Over the years that is what Jane has believed Every time a great crowd comeshe steps back and locks herself up in a room Jane not only believes in her story, but lives it!

Self-improvement may not be everybody's favorite word but if we look at things in a different way we might have greater chances of enjoying the whole process instead of counting the days until we are fully improved Three sessions in a week at the gym would result in a healthier life Reading books every day would build up knowledge And only when we are enjoying the whole process of unlocking our self-improvement power will we realize that we're beginning to take things light and become happy

34.The writer mentions the three questions in Paragraph 2 to show that ____ .

A, we learn our lessons when we experience pain

B we are responsible for the problems we meet

C life fails us when we get into the wrong way

D life is a long journey full of ups and downs

35.What is the key to solving Jane's problem?

A She needs to remember why she started

B She has to know how to get on with people

C She has to realize she is not what she is in her story

D, She needs to understand the importance of confidence

36.The writer probably agrees that _____

A the world tells us how to improve ourselves

B people change when they find it easy to do that

C welcoming change in life is a drive to become better

D enjoying the process of self-improvement makes life simpler

37.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? ___

A Is it important to take things light

B Is it necessary to embrace challenges

C To hold on to the last moment or to give up

D To free ourselves out of the box or to stay in it

Why Short Stories Are Best for English Learning

You get more time to focus on words. When a text is short, you can have more time to learn how every single word is used and what importance it has in the text. This is more useful for those who are    43 (begin) of English. You can read a whole story at a time. Attention length is very important for learning. And the ability to finish a story gives you more time    44 (understand) it. Short stories are written to give you    45 (much)information with less effort ( ).

It is best for consistency ( ). It is much easier to read one story every day than trying to read a big novel that never    46 (seem) to end.

You can share them easily in a group. Since short stories can  47 (read) in any place, they are perfect for book clubs and learning circles. Most of the time these groups do not work because members have no time to read. Short stories are the perfect way for them.

You can focus more on ideas. Language is less about words and more about the meanings behind them. If you spend all your time    48 (learn) vocabulary and grammar, you will never be able to speak a language    49    (smooth) because you will have little to talk about. Short stones give you the chance to understand big ideas in a short text.

In a word, short stories will not only improve your English reading comprehension ( ) but also open your mind to different worlds.

    43. beginners 44. to understand 45. more 46. seems
