Powerful storms had rocked Columbia, Missouri, leaving behind deep floodwaters that continued to rise. Monica Viet’s 16-year-old son Dominic Viet and his 17-year-old friend, Joseph Diener, had gone out to ride bikes and check out the storm damage. With more storms on the way, Monica thought it was best for children to stay home in this situation. Then, she texted him. However, she needn’t have worried. Dominic sent her a reply saying, “Mom, we just saved a girl’s life.”

Here’s what happened. The teens were riding past a basketball court that was deeply flooded when they spotted a girl holding on to a pole and calling out for help. They realized she was seriously in trouble. Fortunately, in school, they had both earned lifesaving medals that included water rescues, and as they glanced around at the other concerned bystanders, they knew they needed to take action. Together, they jumped into the water and fought the fast-flowing water to push the drowning 18-year-old girl to shore. Ten minutes later, they made it.

Once on dry land, the girl began to throw up water. First responders quickly arrived and took her to the hospital, where she is recovering.

The boys’ headmaster said being prepared for emergency situations is attached great importance to in the daily training of our school. He hopes the teens will get special medals for their extraordinary actions that day!

The two boys are now regarded as heroes for risking their own lives to help a stranger. “I feel like if you’re able to save somebody like that,” Joseph said. “You certainly will because that’s what every one of us will do.” “We didn’t think much about it, and we just had to get her out. That’s it! Besides, we’re trained for this!” Dominic added.

    21. Why did Dominic’s mum text him?

    A. To warn him of the coming storms. B. To urge him to come back quickly.

    C. To have him go to the basketball court. D. To tell him to record the storm damage.

    22. What did the boys depend on to rescue the girl?

    A. Their training and skills. B. Their parents’ encouragement.

    C. First responders’ instant help. D. The support from the passers-by.

    23. Which word best describes the boys as rescuers?

    A. Ambitious. B. Demanding. C. Modest. D. Honest.

    B

The first time Richard Epstein went to his local ice-skating rink(溜冰场), he was handed a free pair of skates. Do things out of my comfort zone, and good things happen,he observes.

This wisdom was borne out last December, when Epstein, a 78-year-old scientist, skated in his exhibition. His wife filmed his routine, which he performed with his coach, then his eldest daughter posted it on Twitter. Nearly 3 million people viewed it. Epstein somewhat can’t understand the response, describing himself as “just an old guy going around in circles”.

Often, when he drives to the rink, he reminds himself that good things follow discomfort. He always feels a little anxious. “There is a risk of failure that I have to get over.” he says.

As a child, Epstein was “really terrible” at sports. He still feels embarrassed that he couldn’t threw a ball straight. “I’m an active person but one of the world’s worst athletes. I don’t have this ‘used to be good’ mentality,” he says. What the does have is a long personal and professional history of embracing(欣然接受) mistakes, and uncertainty.

He used to look back at his childhood self, and think that one day he would feel relaxed and cool and comfortable in his own shin. Maybe ice-skating makes up for clumsiness(笨拙) in childhood? Epstein has also tried snowboarding, rock climbing and inline skating, all of which challenge balance.

At high school, Epstein was streamed in “the medium track”. However, as a scientist, he has always committed to projects with uncertain futures, and worked fruitfully in that unmapped space. The word he comes up with to describe his scientific style and perhaps he would say it applies to the rink too is “clumsy”.

Epstein never lets his old age or fear of failures prevent him from pursuing his passion for exploration. He enjoys how the ice takes him out of his ordinary ways. “There’s the wind blowing through my hair. It is a joy to slide and turn, to get on the inside edge of the skate.”

    24. How did Epstein feel about people’s response to his exhibition video?

    A. Anxious. B. Proud. C. Confused. D. Delighted.

    25. What do we know about Epstein’s childhood?

    A. He was an average student. B. He was mentally challenged.

    C. He had a good sense of balance. D. He showed little talent in sports.

    26. What can be learned from the last paragraph?

    A. Epstein is too old to manage his own life.

    B. Epstein is brave enough to try new things.

    C. Fear of failure stops Epstein taking chances.

    D. Epstein’s life returns to normal because of ice.

    C

A 27-year-old inventor, Joco Paulo Lammoglia, has come up with a new device named the AIRE mask, which is capable of converting the wind energy provided by the wearer’s breath into electrical energy. This means breathing has become a source of renewable energy. The inspiration for the invention came from his watching children blowing on pinwheels(玩具风车).

The device is worn like a mask equipped with tiny wind turbines(涡轮机) and it can work its magic even while people are sleeping, jogging or hanging around, since energy is created from one’s breath. The principle of this AIRE mask is simple. The invention uses the wind flow created by breathing and changes it into energy that can charge mobile phones and iPods. Simply put this mask connected to your mobile phone on your face. The rest takes place naturally through your breath that provides power to run turbines which produce electricity.

Lammoglia explained how useful he hopes the AIRE will become. He said, “I hope to bring the concept into production and reduce the carbon footprint. It can be used indoors or outdoors, while you’re sleeping, walking, running or even reading books. “Apart from saving energy and contributing to the environmental protection, it also encourages the practice of physical exercise. This is an entirely all-time renewable energy source. Its energy is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Lammoglia explained why he thought the AIRE was so useful, saying, “Though many of our modern devices offer benefits, they tend to consume a high amount of electrical energy. This may cause environmental problems, especially if the energy used by these devices is obtained from non-renewable energy sources.

The AIRE mask will be the future cheaper energy source of charging mobile phones. It would save energy and allow people to never have to worry about their phone dying unless they stop breathing.

    27. What does the underlined word “converting” in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A. charging B. convincing C. exchanging D. transforming

    28. Lammoglia would most probably agree that the AIRE mask _________.

    A. consumes a high amount of energy B. will account for environmental damage

    C. is a good solution to energy issues D. is available in the shop now

    29. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

    A. An electronic mask  B. A breath-powered device

    C. A new renewable energy source D. An air-purifying device

    30. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A. Education B. Health C. Science D. Entertainment

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Feeling tired by your to-do list can certainly make you unhappy.   31   In a new study, researchers found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective well-being―but only up to a point.

People who had up to two hours of free time a day generally reported they felt better than those who’d had less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse.   32

Of course, most people know naturally that being too busy can cause stress. But the new study is not the first to question whether more free time will actually make people as happy as they believe it will.   33   It can be due to a lack of stimulation and structure, among other things.

Researchers also found that people’s well-being has something to do with the way they spend their extra time.   34   In other words, how people use their free time matters.

35   If watching two hours of Real Housewives in your free time increases your happiness, you should do that. The point of all of this is self-care, not shame.

    1. Of course, what feels “productive” is up to you.
    2. So ultimately the free-time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day.
    3. However, more free time might not have the magic people dream it could be.
    4. These individuals will benefit from spending their newfound time with purpose.
    5. Free-time activities like knitting, reading, cooking or gaming also make people happy.
    6. Experts note, for example, that some adults struggle with the Post-retirement Depression.

    G. In the experiment, the participants believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time and used it unproductively.

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

At first, Michael didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors’ home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house when they got a call from one of his daughters: “The house next door is on fire!” He went to check. That’s when he saw two women and a girl helpless and heartbroken on their doorway.

“The baby’s in there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Michael, then 64, immediately ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara, the woman’s granddaughter and a playmate of Michael’s three youngest kids.

Entering the burning house was like “running into a bucket of black paint”. The thick smoke caused Michael to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous for anyone, but for Michael, who has severe lung disease, they were life-threatening.

After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara?” he asked desperately.

“The second floor,” her aunt shouted back.

Michael knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long. However, taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar design to his, he made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.

    “Baby girl, where are you?”

His throat and lungs burned as if he’d inhaled fire instead of the smoke in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan emerged. Still unable to see, Michael fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. An unlucky thought crossed his mind: I’m probably gonna die up here.
