6’ | Activity 2: Reading for information | 1. Teacher asks students to read the story quickly and get the key information to fill in the table. Students read it and finish the task.
The main idea of the story is… Three elements of a novel: setting, character and plot.
2. Teacher invites students to share the main features of a novel and asks them to do the following tasks. (1) What is the policeman doing when he happens to see the man? (2) Why did the man and his friend separate twenty years ago? (3) What agreement did they make at that time? (4) Did they keep in touch during the twenty years?

Step 3: Reading for opinions | Teacher asks students to read the story for the third time and answer the questions: (1) In the man’s eyes, how was his friend Jimmy Wells? (2) Did the man value their friendship? Why? (3) What has the man experienced in the West in the past twenty years? How about Jimmy? How do you know that? | |||||||||||||||||||
2’ | Step 4: Make a summary | Teacher leads students to analyze the characteristics of the two main characters. Students read the story again and analyze the characteristics of the main characters. Students need to find out the evidence to support their analysis. The man: Jimmy: The policeman: Ideas-evidence | |||||||||||||||||||
9’ | Step 5: Think and share | 1. Teacher asks students to think of a possible ending to “After Twenty Years” and find evidence to support their ideas. (1) Did Jimmy come to meet his friend? (2) What might happen between the policeman and the man? Pay attention to their characteristics when adding the ending.
Students work together to work out a possible ending and then share it in class. Possible versions. 2. Teacher gives students the original ending and asks students to find out what actually happened?
Teacher also offers some questions to students to help them have a better understanding of the story. (1) What does the note tell you about the ending of the story?
Make a summary of the features of O. Henry endings.
3. Teacher also offers two questions to students to discuss.
(1) How do you think Bob would react when he read the note? (2) Do you think that Jimmy did the right thing? Why or why not?
