Having worked for more than a decade in finance in the oil industry in Canada, Tori Fahey found herself wanting more from life. But it wasn’t through desperation that her circumstances changed: “I didn’t get fed up and storm off, nothing like that; it was curiosity about other interests and wanting to experience something new.”
Fahey left her job and completed an MBA before setting up her departure to New York to begin a degree. However, the opportunity for an open year between the MBA and the degree came up, and as a keen touring cyclist, Fahey realized that a dreamed-about adventure was now becoming a possibility: “The ride in Africa had been on my fantasy list. It was a moment when I realized that I could do anything, so I should.”
Fahey rode across Africa, and it was a 7,500-mile trip that took four months. The whole experience had a life-changing impact. Fahey said,“Bicycles provide a literal freedom. You don’t allow yourself to feel like that in everyday life because there are so many distractions. But when you’re out on the bike and there’s nothing else, you’re really free to experience what life is.”
After gaining the degree, Fahey worked on projects with the UNDP(United Nations Development Programme) in Montenegro with the aim of bringing investment to rural communities.
It was while she was working on these projects that the seeds of the next new investment were sown. “It was through my trip across Africa that I discovered pannier and rack systems inconvenient and I was never going to use them again.” Little did she know this would lead her to start up her own company.
In 2013, Apidura was born, producing storage solutions for people looking to travel the world by bike, race across continents and carry all they need to do so. It’s now a successful global brand, but Fahey remains reflective, curious about what else the company can do for people.

We know that there is nothing worse than finding yourself caught in a strange place, disconnected from your loved ones. Here are a variety of travel tips that will help make your journey a safe and enjoyable one.
Plan ahead. There is no way to fully plan for the unexpected, but you can be prepared for it. 1 If traveling by public transportation, make sure you know the route and the stops. Have a well-charged cellphone with you, or take a mobile power pack. You can often save time and money by planning ahead.
Inform family/friends of your travel plans. Make sure you have someone you can contact in case of emergency. If someone is meeting you at your destination, make sure they know exactly when your flight/bus/train arrives.
2 Do you routinely take medicine? Are you traveling with a baby who needs milk powder? These are examples of things to carry with you at all times. If travel is delayed, it doesn’t help you if these items are part of your checked baggage.
Take identification. It is important to have photo identification with you when you travel. Identification is required when you are purchasing bus and train tickets. 3
Check on prohibited items in advance. Visit the Transportation Security Administration’s website to check on what items are prohibited. 4 Better to leave it at home, since you will have to surrender (交出) the item in order to get through the airport security check.
Protect your money. Instead of carrying a lot of cash with you, use your card to pay. 5 Take some cash just in case, but don’t put all your cash in one place. Put some money in different pockets and bags. In case your wallet gets lost or stolen, you can have cash in other places.
A.Don’t forget to take medicine.
B.Be aware of your own special needs.
C.This makes payment easier and safer to manage.
D.In case you want to tour around and look for places, a map app is a must.
E.If traveling by car, have a map with you and know your route in advance.

About ten years ago, my wife and I took a trip to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. I didn’t like to carry all my keys in my pocket during a hike, so I took away the key to the car and left the rest in the car. When we came back, I put the key somewhere in the car without reattaching (把……重新连上)it to the key ring. Then we made a fire, cooked some food, and went to sleep in the back of the SUV.
The next morning, we were cleaning up our campsite when I saw a bird inside my car. I walked over, and it flew away. When we got in the car to go home, I couldn’t find the key. We searched and searched, even emptying out the car completely, but it was gone.
Then it hit me that the bird must have taken it. After all, those birds are known for stealing shiny things and decorating their nests with them. Keys are shiny. The bird was the thief! It made perfect sense to me. So I decided to find its nest.
But there was a problem: As everyone knows, the Grand Canyon is a little large in area, so I didn’t have confidence in actually finding a certain nest belonging to a certain bird in a certain tree in all that space. But what other choices did I have?
My wife was not encouraging me. She said, “Are you crazy? You’ll never find it! The Grand Canyon is one of the biggest holes on Earth!” I didn’t answer and walked steadily forward until her laughter died away.
I struggled to keep hope as I searched dozens of trees and tracked every singing bird. It was like searching a needle in the sea. But, oh, how great my victory would be when I held the missing key from the bird’s nest!
Paragraph 1:
After two hours of search, I finally gave up and returned to the car.
Paragraph 2:
The next day, we stopped at a service centre for lunch.

I didn’t get fed up可知,A项“她厌倦了工作”和B项“她对生活感到失望”错误;D项“她发现很难适应环境”原文未提及。
Bicycles provide a literal freedom...you’re really free to experience what life is.
In 2013, Apidura was born, producing storage solutions for people looking to travel the world by bike, race across continents and carry all they need to do so.
3.desperation n.绝望 4.get fed up 厌倦 5.keen adj.
7.be free to do...
It was through my trip across Africa that I discovered pannier and rack systems inconvenient and I was never going to use them again.
其中It was...that...是强调句型,强调方式状语through my trip across Africa。discovered pannier and rack systems inconvenient为“discovered+宾语+宾补”结构, pannier and rack systems 为宾语。
There is no way to fully plan for the unexpected, but you can be prepared for it. If traveling by public transportation, make sure you know the route and the stops. 符合语境,承上启下,且E项中“know your route in advance”与本段主旨句“Plan ahead.”
Do you routinely take medicine? Are you traveling with a baby who needs milk powder? These are examples of things to carry with you at all times. B项中“your own special needs”与下文中“take medicine”和“needs milk powder”相呼应。
Identification is required when you are purchasing bus and train tickets.
Better to leave it at home, since you will have to surrender (交出) the item in order to get through the airport security check. 下文中的it指代的就是G项中的the Swiss army knife。
Instead of carrying a lot of cash with you, use your card to pay. 符合语境,承接上文,C项中的This指代上文中的use your card to pay。
We know that there is nothing worse than finding yourself caught in a strange place, disconnected from your loved ones.
disconnected from your loved ones为过去分词短语作状语。

I didn’t get fed up可知,A项“她厌倦了工作”和B项“她对生活感到失望”错误;D项“她发现很难适应环境”原文未提及。
Bicycles provide a literal freedom...you’re really free to experience what life is.
In 2013, Apidura was born, producing storage solutions for people looking to travel the world by bike, race across continents and carry all they need to do so.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
After two hours of search, I finally gave up and returned to the car. Then I found my wife relaxing in a chair, drinking a cup of coffee. She was really smart. The next challenge was to get a new key. Luckily, another family came to the campsite, so I asked them to send for a locksmith. They promised they would. Five hours later, the locksmith showed up and he charged me twice the normal amount for making a new key.
Paragraph 2:
The next day, we stopped at a service centre for lunch. I pulled out the cup holder and the missing key was sitting right there. Imagine my embarrassment! It was the only place we didn’t look at. And guess who put it there! My wife! We actually both made mistakes because I had pushed the cup holder back without noticing the key. I got out of the car, looked up at the sky and said, “Bird, I was wrong about you. I’m sorry.”
