2. When struggling single mom Shetara Sims won ＄100 on the lottery, she decided to donate it all to the family of a police officer who had been shot in the line of duty.
Sims did so despite her own money worries. Like many Americans. she has recently lost her job. Sims only had her last ＄7 when she found a dollar bill. She used it to buy a lottery ticket,winning ＄100. Sims' 12-year-old daughter, Rakiya Edmonson, suggested that they donate it to the family of a Kansas City police officer who had been wounded in the line of duty. The officer's difficult situation was a reminder of their own experience with personal tragedy. Rakiya's sister,Sims' eldest daughter, was killed in 2012. The detectives who worked the case became much needed support to the family.
To repay some of the hope that these officers gave back to her family,Sims called the police department on July 10 to make her ＄100 donation. She decided to submit anonymously, not leaving her name or number.
News of her generous donation soon spread. Officers spent days tracking her down,hoping to find her and repay her kindness. "To hear her call and just express thanks for no reason other than she's thankful, it's really affecting us, and it's really touching to us," Kansas City Police Department Jake Becchina said.
Once they learned her identity, officers started a GoFundMe campaign for Sims. Hundreds of people who heard the story had reached out, wanting to help. By Wednesday it had raised more than ＄59，000.
Becchina said it's kindness from people like Sims that motivates officers to keep serving. Sims and Rakiya have since met with coworkers of the injured officer, who is still hospitalized.

3. The World Food Program won the Nobel Peace Prize for fighting hunger and seeking to end its use as "a weapon of war and conflict" at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has driven millions more people to the edge of starvation.
"We are sending a signal to every nation who raises objections to international cooperation," committee chair Berit Reiss-Andersen said. "We are sending a signal to this type of nationalism where the responsibility for global affairs is not being faced."
The Rome-based agency has brought aid to multiple crises, including Ethiopia's hunger of 1984， the Asian tsunami of 2004 and the Haiti earthquake of 2010. It continued to bring assistance to the world's most dangerous and unsafe places, from air-dropping food in South Sudan and Syria to creating an emergency delivery service that kept aid flowing even as pandemic restrictions prevented commercial flights taking off.
"Where there is conflict, there is hunger. And where there is hunger, there is often conflict," Beasley said in a statement on the agency's website. "Today is a reminder that food security,peace and stability go together."
The Nobel Committee called on governments to ensure that WFP and other aid organizations receive the financial support needed to feed millions in countries such as Yemen.

When the award was announced. Beasley was in Niger, following a visit to neighboring Burkina Faso-two countries in the Sahel region of Africa that he said is "under attack by extremists and climate extremes" and going through "a devastating" time.

4. Nothing is more American than blue jeans. The blue denim pants（牛仔裤）were invented in 1871 and were initially made for miners and cowboys but became a popular fashion among youth in the 1950s and 1960s. Denim soon became accepted by most people, making jean pants, jackets, skirts, and more a big part of western culture.
Now, Wrangler which has been making jeans since 1947，is greening the industry by dyeing denim with indigo-the deep blue color used for jeans-foam（泡沫）instead of the traditional way of using vats of Indigo liquid dye.
While indigo is a natural compound and has been used to dye cloth for centuries,most of the indigo dyes used today are manmade, and dyeing thread for the production of blue jeans is very wasteful. The thread has to be pulled through multiple dye boxes filled with around 2，000 liters of liquid dye and water,and the process has to be repeated several times for the dye to hold according to Fast Company.
The new eco-friendly foam dyeing method was developed at Texas Tech and uses over 99 percent less water than the traditional method. In 2017，Wrangler, the Walmart Foundation, and Lee, another blue jeans brand invested in new technology to make the industry more sustainable.
In the new "Indigo good" methods the process saves more than just water；it is expected to use 60 percent less energy and produces 60 percent less waste.
"While we have been able to reduce 3 billion liters of water in product finishing during the past 10 years,we know that more needs to be done across the entire supply chain." Wrangler president Tom Waldron told Fashion Network. "Foam technology reduces water consumption and pollution further upstream."

2. When struggling single mom Shetara Sims won ＄100 on the lottery, she decided to donate it all to the family of a police officer who had been shot in the line of duty.

The detectives who worked the case became much needed support to the family.
To repay some of the hope that these officers gave back to her family,Sims called the police department on July 10 to make her ＄100 donation. She decided to submit anonymously, not leaving her name or number.
News of her generous donation soon spread. Officers spent days tracking her down,hoping to find her and repay her kindness. "To hear her call and just express thanks for no reason other than she's thankful, it's really affecting us, and it's really touching to us," Kansas City Police Department Jake Becchina said.
Once they learned her identity, officers started a GoFundMe campaign for Sims. Hundreds of people who heard the story had reached out, wanting to help. By Wednesday it had raised more than ＄59，000.
Becchina said it's kindness from people like Sims that motivates officers to keep serving. Sims and Rakiya have since met with coworkers of the injured officer, who is still hospitalized.

4. Nothing is more American than blue jeans. The blue denim pants（牛仔裤）were invented in 1871 and were initially made for miners and cowboys but became a popular fashion among youth in the 1950s and 1960s.
