To use ‘may’ and ‘might’ to talk about permission
Learning procedures:
1. 自学展示
Fill in the blanks with may, can(not), must.
M: Someone is knocking at the door. ______ it be Lucy?
S: It _____ be Lucy. I didn’t call her. I think it ____ be Daniel. Ah, yes! Daniel, come in.

2. 探究学习
Step 1. Lead-in
Ask the students a question “Could you tell us something about the life on Mars?” Tell the students to show us the life on Mars in different ways, such as, transport, food and water, what to wear, how to work, how to study, etc.[来源:Z_xx_k.Com]
Step 2. Presentation
1) Ask the students what they should say in the following situations.
This morning ×××was late. If he wanted to come into the classroom, he should say, “__________”
If I want to borrow a dictionary from a student, I should say, “____________________”.
Now If a student wants to borrow a book from me, what should he/she say?
2) Ask the students to find out the difference between the two sentences.

From the words above, the students can know that we can use ‘can’, ‘could’, ‘may’, ‘might’ to talk about permission, and these four words have different degrees of formality.
Step 3 Practice
(1) Show the students some pictures and ask them to choose the better words.
(2) Remind the students of the usages of the modal verbs by giving them two dialogues。
3. 课堂整理
情态动词提前学:表示商量猜测不十分确定的事情.肯定句用must; might; may 疑问句用can; could 否定句can’t ;couldn’t; may not
(1) 肯定句是有根据,有经验的判断用must
The tall man must be a player. He must work in this school 。
不肯定,无把握的猜测用may ,往往在有"..not sure"的句子时才用may
Your answer may be right, but I’m not sure. 客气礼貌婉转用might
You might need some money. I think you might be hungry.
(2) 疑问句只能用can,could不能用must,may,might

猜测远处的人,看不见的人用 Who can it be?
“Someone is knocking at the door, who can it be?”

(3) 有把握有根据的否定猜测用can’t,couldn’t“不可能”,无把握无根据用may not,might not“可能不”,不能用mustn’t。mustn’t不是猜测是“不允许..”、“禁止”。He can’t be at the library, for I saw him just now.
He might not know the headmaster.
▼can, be able to 表示能力的区别
can长期固有的自然能力
I can drive a car.
be able to经过努力克服困难后才获得的能力
After three months’ study, I am able to drive a car now.
I have been able to drive a car now.
▼can, could, may, might表示许可
could可用于现在时的疑问句表示客气礼貌,of course you can表示乐意对方用自己的东西。

情态动词can, could, may, might的用法
can用于问候朋友;could用于问候老师和成年人;may用于问候陌生人和你尊敬的人,显得正式而有礼貌;might用于非常有礼貌的场合,很少用。
e.g. 1)——爸爸,我能用你的照相机吗?
——可以。
—Dad, I use your camera?
—Yes, you .
2)Daniel,我能借你的字典吗?
Daniel, I borrow your dictionary?
4. 当堂练习
Fill in the blanks with may, can(not), must(not), needn’t, ought to.
S: Mum, ________ I use your computer? I want to search for some information.
M: Sorry, you ________ use it now. I am busy. And I think you _____ ______ spend more time on your homework.
S: ______ I do it now?
M: Well, you ________. After lunch, you ______ have a rest. Then do your homework. You _______ use the computer after you finish your work. But you _________ play computer games.
