Nothing beats live music, but the venue(场所)makes a difference. When you’re able to score tickets to an incredible concert in an incredible place, you won’t forget the experience. Here are some of the coolest music venues from around the world. If you haven’t been to any of these, you’ve got some traveling to do.
Red Rocks, Morrison, the United States
Red Rocks might be the most beautiful and famous venue in the United States. At 6,450 feet above sea level, Red Rocks is a geologically formed natural stage. Its massive sandstone provides a perfect stage for jam bands. If you’re into the blues and jazz, you’ll have no trouble finding something in line with your interests.
    Meet Factory, Prague, Czech Republic
Smallest venues on this list, Meet Factory is an art gallery, theater, and music venue. The venue only accommodates 1,000 people, so you won’t see any huge names come through. Still, it’s a great place to see up-and-coming local acts, and if you’ve got an eye for contemporary art, you’ll love your time here.
    Arena of Nǐmes, Nǐmes, France
Originally built around A. D. 70, the Arena of Nǐmes presents concert goers with an interesting question:Should they enjoy the music, or marvel at the architecture? The Arena is, after all, one of the world’s best-preserved Roman theaters. Many major touring acts plan stops at the Arena of Nǐmes, especially during the venue’s annual festival.
    Sydney Opera House, Sydney, Australia
The Sydney Opera House is one of the world’s most famous performing venues. It’s also one of the most distinctive buildings in Sydney, thanks to the breathtaking design by Danish architect Utzon. It hosts about 40 events per week, so whether you’re into jazz, rock, classical music, or opera, you’ll find something to watch.
    21. Where can you enjoy music in natural beauty?
    A. At Red Rocks. B. At Meet Factory. C. At Arena of Nǐmes D. At Sydney Opera House.
    22. What is special about Meet Factory?
    A. It enjoys breathtaking scenery. B. It hosts both musical and artistic events.
    C. It is the largest venue of all. D. It is famous for contemporary music.
    23. What do the listed music venues have in common?
    A. They have a long history. B. They are built near the sea.
    C. They accommodate thousands of people. D. They are beautiful tourist attractions.
    B
The event happened to Hunter as if it were yesterday when he was working in a fancy French restaurant in Denver. The ice cream he was serving fell onto the white dress of a rich and important woman.
Thirty years have passed, but Hunter can’t get the memory out of his mind, nor the woman’s kind reaction. She was shocked, regained calmness and, in a kind voice, told the young Hunter, “It’s OK. It wasn’t your fault.” When she left the restaurant, she also left the future Fortune 500 CEO with a life lesson. You can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she treats the waiter.
Hunter isn’t the only CEO to have made this discovery. Rather, it seems to be one of those few laws of the land that every CEO learns on the way up. It’s hard to get a dozen CEOs to agree about anything, but most agree with the Waiter Rule. They say how others treat the CEO says nothing. But how others treat the waiter is like a window into the soul.
Watch out for anyone who pulls out the power card to say something like, “I could buy this place and fire you,” or “I know the owner and I could have you fired.” Those who say such things have shown more about their character than about their wealth and power.
The CEO who came up with it, or at least first wrote it down, is Raytheon CEO Bill Swanson. He wrote a best-selling book called Swanson’s Unwritten Rules of Management.
“A person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter, or to others, is not a nice person,” Swanson says. “I will never offer a job to the person who is sweet to the boss but turns rude to someone cleaning the tables.”
    24. What happened after Hunter dropped the ice cream onto the woman’s dress?
    A. He was fired. B. He was blamed.
    C. The woman comforted him. D. The woman left the restaurant at once.
    25. What made Hunter learn one of his life lessons?
    A. His experience as a waiter. B. The advice given by the CEOs.
    C. An article in Fortune. D. An interesting best-selling book.
    26. What do most CEOs agree with?
    A. Fortune 500 companies. B. The Management Rules.
    C. Swanson’s book. D. The Waiter Rule
    27. What can we learn from the text?
    A. One should be nicer to important people.
    B. CEOs often show their power before others.
    C. One should respect others no matter who they are.
    D. CEOs often have meals in expensive restaurants.
    C
A Russian natural gas tanker(油轮)has completed an experimental round trip along the Northern Sea Route(NSR)-the first time the path across the Arctic has been made at this time of year. It returned to the Russian gas station at Sabetta on February 19. The voyage by the Christophe de Margerie tanker through the ice is the latest visual indicator of climate change in the cold region.
The tanker set out from a Chinese port on January 27 after delivering its cargo. It entered the Northern Sea Route, which traverses(横越)Russia’s north coast. A few days later near Cape Dezhnev, it was met by the Russian nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy(50 Years of Victory). Together they completed the 2,500-nautical-mile voyage through the ice in 11 days and 10 hours.
The ship managed to complete the first leg of the trip from Russia to China without an icebreaker. Both of the journeys broke records for winter navigation(航行)due to the changing climate in the Arctic allowing passage through thinner ice. Using the Northern Sea Route lets shippers in Russia and other countries avoid a much longer southern journey around Europe, the Middle East and all of southern Asia, saving millions of dollars.
The ships encountered no multi-year buildup of old ice on the route, and the deepest ice was about 5 feet thick. However, meteorologist and journalist Eric Holthaus called that a clear indicator of “a climate emergency”.
Last May, Christophe de Margerie became the first large-capacity cargo ship to complete an eastbound transit of the Northern Sea Route, two months earlier in the year than the journey traditionally made.
“As a result of the early Northern Sea Route voyage completed by Christophe de Margerie in May 2020, as well as the current NSR voyage, the navigation in the Eastern part of the Arctic was practically doubled,” Eric Holthaus said. He noted that for decades the transit route along that part of the NSR had typically remained closed by ice from November until July.
    28. Which factor contributed most to Christophe de Margerie’s successful trip?
    A. The ideal equipment. B. The ocean current.
    C. The nuclear power. D. The climate change.
    29. What’s Eric Holthaus’ attitude to the gas tanker’s trip across the Arctic?
    A. Skeptical. B. Concerned. C. Critical. D. Tolerant.
    30. What does the underlined word “encountered” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Picked up. B. Prepared for. C. Came across. D. Depended on.
    31. How long can the NSR route be used by cargo ships now?
    A. 2 months. B. 3 months. C. 4 months. D. 6 months.
    D
Not all animal rights activists love animals. Some respect them because they understand animals have a place in the world. Zoos, especially the ones that are doing everything right, present a special challenge to the animal-loving advocates(拥护者)because they would like to see and interact with the animals.
Zoo advocates argue that they save endangered species and educate the public, but many animal rights activists believe the costs outweigh the benefits, and the violation(违反)of the rights of the individual animals is unreasonable. Roadside zoos, petting zoos, and smaller animal exhibitors tend to offer inadequate space for the animals, keeping them in pens or cages. Sometimes cold concrete and metal bars are all a tiger or bear will know for their entire lives. Larger, trusted zoos try to distance themselves from these operations by selling how well the animals are treated, but to animal rights activists, the problem is not how well the animals are treated, but whether we have a right to limit them for our amusement or “education”.
By bringing people and animals together, zoos educate the public and promote an appreciation of the animals. This exposure and education motivate people to protect the animals. Zoos save endangered species by bringing them into a safe environment, where they are protected from poachers(偷猎者), habitat loss, starvation, and predators(捕食者). Many zoos also have multiplying programs for endangered species. In the wild, these individuals might have trouble finding mates and multiplying. A good zoo provides an enriched habitat in which the animals are never bored, are well cared for, and have plenty of space. Zoos are a tradition, and a visit to a zoo is a healthy family activity.
In the case of zoos, both sides will argue that their side saves animals. Whether, or not zoos benefit the animal community, they certainly do make money. As long as there is demand for zoos, they will continue to exist. We can start by making sure that zoo conditions are the best possible for the animals who are limited to them.
    32. What do we know about Zoo’s advantages?
    A. It can protect animals and provide room for communicating.
    B. It gives people more chances to get in touch with animals.
    C. It can offer foods that all the animals need while animals are in trouble.
    D. It makes animals live longer there without any sickness.
    33. Who are for Zoos?
    A. Animal rights activists. B. Zoo advocates.
    C. Animal-loving advocates. D. All the poachers’ activists.
34.What will happen to Zoos in the future?
    A. They will be cancelled.
    B. They will be combined with aquariums(水族馆;水族箱).
    C. They will be limited.
    D. They will become better and better.
    35. What is the text mainly about?
    A. Endangered species in zoos. B. Zoos’ advantages and disadvantages.
    C. People and animals in zoos. D. Arguments for and against zoos.

While you want to live in reality, don’t forget that you have the power to bring positive thinking to your world. 36 Other people will be afraid to have you around.
37 But it’s important to think good thoughts on purpose to reduce the effects from bad experiences.
Scientists say our bodies produce a chemical reaction to every single thought we have. And many believe that the negative thinking can cause physical or mental illness, even cancer.
Let’s assume our thoughts do have this kind of power to affect our mental health an relationships. Imagine mental health is a magnet(磁铁). Then how can we become a positive person? 39
Firstly you had better let your good thoughts outweigh(比…重要)your bad ones. Check out what’s taking place inside your own head each day. 40 Moreover, you can practice encouraging other people. Praise others as much as you can. See how other people respond to your words. Of course, don’t forget to speak positively to yourself on purpose as well. In addition, it is a good idea to stay with people who have positive power. Their happy moods and positive life attitudes will have a good effect on you.
    A. The following tips may help you.
    B. If you don’t, your relationships will suffer.
    C. A positive person will be much more popular.
    D. Hang out with your friends if you are available.
    E. So it is important for us to be a mentally positive person in our life.
    F. Try your best to think of good things and control your bad thoughts.
    G. Most people have gone through an awful event or suffered a downfall.

W:I want to get into shape and have thinner legs. I should really exercise more.
M:That’s true for everybody. What do you do to keep fit?
W:Well, I used to practice yoga alone, but I already got tired of it. I signed up for online dancing lessons but never even attended once. Maybe I need to get a running machine.
M:Exercising at home is difficult, as the environment is not suitable for exercising.
W:You are right. I should join a gym then.
M:If that’s the case, you may want to check out my club. Here, have these guest passes.
W:Thank you. I’ll head over this weekend.
M:No problem. We will usually host a range of events and I can show you around.

M:Hello, today we will learn some interesting facts about Norway. The national day of Norway is officially called “Constitution Day”. It is celebrated on May 17th to celebrate Norway’s establishment 200 years ago.
Norway is famous for its fantastic fjords and landscapes. Two of the country’s fjords are on the World Natural Heritage list. Norway is known as the “Land of the Midnight Sun”, because in summer, the sun never completely drops below the horizon in northern Arctic Circle areas. However, it is then the opposite in winter. The Sami are local people who have been living in Norway for over 10,000 years. They are famous for their colorful clothes and raising of reindeer. The Sami are also skilled fishers.
Norway is the most successful nation at the Winter Olympics. It is one of the three countries who have won more medals at winter sports such as skiing. Football has the highest participation level in Norway, while fancy sports like snowboarding are popular mostly among young people.

    Dear Tony,
I’m glad that you want to take part in some voluntary activities. However, you are worried about it will influence your study. From my point of view, it’s worth doing it.
First of all, you can learn how to cooperate well with others by doing voluntary work, which will improve your social skills and help you get along well with others. What’s more, you can relax yourself in your spare time because devoting yourself to your study all the time can make you feel tired.
In a word, I hold the belief that being a volunteer when you are free is beneficial to you.
    Yours,
