I'm writing to you to call for volunteers for Excellence Connections, a tutoring (指导) programme that matches 12th graders to the students from grade seven to nine to work together. The programme aims to help students with study, activities and personal development, and to better prepare them for their next step—senior high school.
Excellence Connections runs throughout the school year. Volunteers meet with the students on Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 7:45 (you can attend either on Wednesday or on Thursday). Today an electric light is the most commonly used device in our daily lives. We need them to provide light for houses, buildings, and streets. We also have handheld lights that have a backup (后备) time of more than 12 hours. The technology that we use today may be different from the past, but what we have today can be traced all the way back to the invention of the electric light.
Efforts to create a working electric light go back to 1800 when an Italian scientist named Alessandro Volta, during his experiments on the development of electric batteries, observed that when a copper (铜) wire connected the two ends of the battery, it started to glow due to the passage of electricity. The electric battery he invented then became the source of many electric experiments.
Researches and developments on the electric light were continued by many inventors. It is said that the electric light was invented by 20 inventors before Thomas Edison.
The main problem in the developments of the electric light was the filament (灯丝) inside it; it didn't last very long and melted very quickly. In this regard, Thomas Edison was very important in the development of the electric light.
Edison started developing and testing new filaments that could last longer. He tested many materials and finally developed a filament that could last for 13.5 hours, which proved that he was moving in the right direction. He tried more than 3,000 electric light designs and 6,000 different filament materials. Finally, he found a filament that could last for more than 1,200 hours.
Edison became successful not just because he developed a long-lasting filament. He also developed the entire electric lighting system, including the sockets (插孔) and switches. He also made the first steam-generating power station in 1882.
24. Who created the first electric battery?
A. Thomas Edison.
B. Some historians.
C. Alessandro Volta.
D. Twenty inventors.
25. What was the biggest difficulty in the development of the electric light?
A. The electric light melted in a short time.
B. The filaments could not last for a long time.
C. There were only a few materials to make filaments.
D. The designs for the electric light were not good enough.
26. Which of the following is NOT Thomas Edison's contribution?
A. He found a long-lasting filament.
B. He created an electric lighting system.
C. He developed 3,000 light bulb designs.
D. He developed the first steam-generating power station.
27. What do you think could be the best title of this passage?
A. How Electric Lights Work
B. The Life of Thomas Edison
C. The Development of the Electric Light
D. The Advanced Technology of Electricity

In China, over 162 million children in rural areas lack sufficient educational opportunities. Founded in 2008, Teach For China (TFC) attempts to close the gap in educational quality and achievement between cities and rural areas in China. To reduce the shortage of teachers in rural China, TFC enlists the most promising young graduates from top universities in China to ensure that one day, all children in China will enjoy access to quality education.
In partnership with local governments, TFC first identifies high-need schools and then introduces the concept to school officers to ensure local buy-in. Participating teachers, who are titled as "fellows", are trained to serve as full-time teachers in rural areas where they work for two years to equip students with academic and life skills they need to succeed in life.
Before placement, TFC's intensive Summer Institute prepares fellows to be effective teachers, strong cross-cultural communicators, and meaningful, long-term contributors to their placement communities. Fellows are placed in under-resourced schools selected for demonstrated student need. Fellows share their knowledge and brainstorm solutions to local challenges. Additionally, fellows receive the support of full-time instructional coaches who engage in joint problem solving to boost student achievement. TFC also provides online teaching resources to help fellows improve their teaching level.
Since its founding, TFC has trained and placed a total of more than 2,200 fellows. After the programme, they work in the field of education, business, public welfare, and government non-profit organisations, etc. In the long term, TFC seeks to develop a network of leaders working across a variety of sectors to end educational inequality in China. More than 540,000 students from Yunnan, Guangdong, Gansu, Guangxi, and Fujian provinces have benefited from the programme, and the number is still growing. For example, during the 2018–2019 school year, fellows helped students make significant progress in academic performance. About 52% of the classes got a higher average score on major tests. About 55% of the classes have improved the pass rate on major tests. And about 61% of the classes achieved a higher excellent rate.
28. What is the aim of Teach For China?

Animals are used to develop medical treatments, determine the harmfulness of medications, and check the safety of products designed for human use, and other biomedical, business and health care uses. Researches on living animals have been practised since at least 500 BC.
Supporters of animal testing say that it has enabled the development of many life-saving treatments for both humans and animals and has contributed to many life-saving cures and treatments. The California Biomedical Research Association states that nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from animal research. Experiments in which dogs had their pancreases (胰腺) removed led directly to the discovery of insulin (胰岛素), essential to saving the lives of diabetics (糖尿病患者). The polio vaccine (脊髓灰质炎疫苗), tested on animals, reduced the global occurrence of the disease from an estimated 350,000 cases in 1988 to 33 reported cases in 2018.
In many cases, animals are appropriate research subjects because they are similar to human beings in many ways. For example, chimpanzees share 99% of their DNA with humans, and mice are 98% genetically similar to humans. Supporters of animal testing also think that animals must be used in cases when the use of human subjects is not allowed.
However, many people believe animal testing is cruel and inhumane. According to Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to forced feeding, forced breathing, food and water removal, extended periods of physical control, wounds created to study the healing process, and pain employed to study its effects and ways to deal with it. They also think that since alternative testing methods now exist that can replace the need for animals, scientists should make more effort in researching these alternative methods. Moreover, drugs that pass animal tests are not necessarily safe. A 1950s sleeping pill, which caused 10,000 babies to be born with deformities, was tested on animals before its release.
Many countries have regulations regarding the safety and health of animal subjects used in experiments. In March 2013, the European Union stopped importing and selling make-up products that use ingredients tested on animals. With technological advances, there may be no need for animal testing in the near future.
32. What is the main topic of this article?
A. The history of animal testing.
B. Medical research on animals.
C. Medical treatment for animals.
D. Medical research development.
33. Which one is NOT supporting evidence for animal testing?
A. The polio vaccine saved hundreds of thousands of lives after being tested on animals.
B. Mice are 98% genetically similar to humans, so they are often used in medical research.
C. Medical breakthroughs in the last century have depended a lot on researches using animals.
D. Medical experiments on animals are inhumane because they cause deaths of tested animals.
34. Which is NOT a reason why opponents think animal testing should be stopped?
A. Alternative methods have been developed to replace tests on animals.
B. The cost of raising those animals for experimental use is too expensive.
C. There are still possible dangers of medicines that have passed animal tests.
D. Animals are treated in extreme situations to test their biological reactions to the conditions.
35. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?
A. To call for punishment on researchers using animals.
B. To show the author's sympathy for animals in experiments.
C. To show the author's support for using animals in research.
