He decided t stp skiing. There was a better chance f smene finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was find shelter frm the freezing wind and snw. If he didn't, his bdy temperature wuld get very lw, which culd quickly kill him.
Using his skis, Nichlas built a snw cave. He gathered a huge mass f snw and dug ut a hle in the middle. Then he piled branches n tp f himself, like a blanket, t stay as warm as he culd.
By that evening, Nichlas was really hungry. He ate snw and drank water frm a nearby stream s that his bdy wuldn't lse t much water. Nt knwing hw much lnger he culd last, Nichlas did the nly thing he culd—he huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nichlas went ut t lk fr help, but he culdn't find anyne. He fllwed his tracks and returned t the snw cave, because withut shelter, he culd die that night. On Tuesday, Nichlas went ut again t find help. He had walked fr abut a mile when a vlunteer searcher fund him. After tw days stuck in the snw, Nichlas was saved.
Nichlas might nt have survived this snwstrm had it nt been fr TV. He had ften watched Grylls' survival shw Man vs. Wild. That's where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episde (一期节目) f Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandned in a wild area and has t find his way ut.

An earthquake happens when tw plates rub (摩擦) tgether. The earth plates travel in different directins and at different speeds. If ne plate is slwly frced under the ther, pressure builds up until the plates break apart. This prcess causes the grund t mve. It is an earthquake. In ther wrds, earthquakes are the shaking f the earth's surface caused by the earth's rcky uter layer (岩层) as a result f the energy stred within the earth. The strain within the rcks is suddenly released (释放).
The damage an earthquake causes depends n where it is and when it is happening. If an unppulated regin is struck, there will be lw lss f life r prperty. If it hits a large city, there may be many injuries and much destructin. Many f the areas at risk are largely ppulated nw. Majr earthquakes hitting thse areas tday culd prduce terrible damage.
Actually, there are several millin small earthquakes every year. Large earthquakes such as the 1964 Alaskan quake that measured 9.2 n the Richter Scale, caused millins f dllars in damage. In the last 500 years, millins f peple have been killed by earthquakes arund the wrld—including 240,000 in the 1976 Tangshan earthquake in China.
A 60secnd r less earthquake can cause devastatin (破坏) that cntinues fr years after the first tremr (震动). In 1972, a series f severe earthquakes struck Managua, Nicaragua. Fifteen years later, the city still lked the way it had a week after the earthquake hit, because the cuntry did nt have the necessary mney t rebuild it.
The shaking f the earth is smetimes nt the greatest disaster. It is in the ensuing fires and flds that ften the greatest damage ccurs. In the 1906 earthquake, it was the fires caused after it that did the majrity f the damage.
