    Wrking ut the rules
    We smetimes use ellipisis t avid (1) (stressing/repeating) ne r mre wrds when the meaning is clear. We can use ellipsis: in shrt respnses; in infinitives; after sme cnjunctins like if, when and while; in clauses with the same pattern and the same verb; at the beginning f a sentence in (2) (infrmal/frmal) speech.
    运用省略手法,可以避免重复,使句子简练。常见的省略现象有以下几种: 一.在非正式场合,如果语境清晰,常省略主语或主语+动词。例如:  (Are yu) Ready?
    二 .在简短对话中,答句常保留主语和助动词,省略其后主要动词以及上句出现过的其他内容。例如: —Did yu g t the museum yesterday? —N, I didn’t (g t the museum yesterday)
    三.在并列句结构中,常省略与前面相同的主语、谓语或其他成分。例如: (1) Peter entered the classrm and (Peter) sat at his desk. (2) I like dancing but my brther (likes) singing. (3) What I said made Jack happy but (what I said made) Jane angry.
    二 并列句中的省略
    Mr. Smith picked up a cin in the rad and (Mr. Smith) handed it t a pliceman.
    Sme called fr the applicatin f the mdern technlgy, and thers (called fr) a change f lifestyle.
    I was brn in winter in 1988 and Bb (was brn in winter) in 1989.
    Jack must have been playing ftball and Mary (must have been) ding her hmewrk.
    四.从属连词when、where、if、than等后常用省略结构。例如: (1) Yu shuld be careful when (yu are) crssing the rad. (2) Yu need t make imprvements where (it is) necessary. (3) Please call me back if (it is) pssible. (4) I lve English mre than (I) ever (lved English).
    四 复合句中的省略
    I felt wrried when (I am) watching the dcumentary.
    若从句的主语与主句的主语相同或者从句的主语是it,且谓语是be时,常同时省略从句的主语和be。
    If (it is) impssible, I will help yu with yur wrk.
    A. 在限制性定语从句中,作宾语用的关系代词whm,which,that可省略。
    The film star (whm/wh/that)I like mst is Bruce Lee.
    B. 定语从句中的“主语(关系代词) + be”有时可以省略。

    注:关系代词引导非限制性定语从句,即使在从句中作宾语,也不可省略。“介词+关系代词”引导定语从句,关系代词不可省略。

    在say, knw, think, believe, suppse, cnsider, find, decide等动词后面所接的一个宾语从句中,连词that可以省略;若后接多个宾语从句,只有第一个连词that可省略,其余的连词that不能省略。

    Our Chinese teacher said (that) the text was very imprtan and that we shuld memmize it.
    五.不定式作宾语或宾语补足语时,常省略t后面的内容。例如: (1) Yu dn’t have t d it if yu dn’t want t (d it). (2) Yu’d better nt take medicine unless yur dctr tld yu t (take medicine). 如果不定式后接be动词或动词的完成式,省略句中往往保留be或have。例如: (1) I am busier nw than I used t be (busy). (2) —Has Mike finished his prject? —He seems t have (finished his prject).
    五 不定式中的省略
    1.保留不定式符号t的情况
    A.不定式作某些动词的宾语时,常见动词如want , like,lve,care,hpe,wish,expect,prefer,refuse, mean, agree, affrd, frget,remember,try,manage等 。

    B.不定式在句中作某些动词的宾语补足语或主语补足语时,常见动词如ask,advise,persuade, tell, wish, allw, permit, frce等 。
    At last they did as I tld them t. (宾补)
    He wuld nt have married her if he had nt been frced t. (主补)
    2.不定式符号可省略的情况
    A. 主语部分或修饰主语的定语部分有实义动词d的各种形式,作表语的不定式可省略t,也可保留t。
    The mst imprtant thing I shuld d is (t) give yu sme advice n hw t learn a freign language.
    B.不定式做介词but,except等的宾语,且前面有实义动词d的各种形式时,须省略不定式符号t 。
    They did nthing but watch TV last night.
    I dn't want t d anything except help yu.
    He had n chice but t tell her the truth.
    C.在see, lk at, hear, listen t, watch, ntice,bserve,feel,have,make,let等词后作宾语补足语时,须省略不定式符号t 。
    Yesterday I listened t Mary speak mvingly abut her lve stry nce again.
    注:以上动词若用于被动语态,则不定式符号t不可省略

    Applying the rules
    Finish B1 n Page 7. Crrect the mistakes and rewrite the sentences using ellipsis.
    Read the shrt passage in B2 n Page 7 and put brackets arund the wrds that can be left ut.
    Last weekend, I tk part in a frest clean-up activity. It was rganized by GreenHpe, an rganizatin devted t prtecting frests. At first I didn’t want t (take part in the frest clean-up activity), but then I thught, “What if nbdy ges?” Our team leader, Je, tk us t a frest utside the city. I was sad t see litter everywhere. There was a “N littering (is allwed here)” sign at the entrance t the frest, but that didn’t stp peple frm thrwing their rubbish n the grund. Je divided us int tw grups: ne grup cleaned up the nrth side f the frest, and the ther (grup) (cleaned up)
    the suth side (f the frest). We wrked fr several hurs and (we) were happy t see (that) the frest lked cleaner than (it had lked) befre. It was abslutely wrth ur effrt! There’ll be anther clean-up activity in the green belt next Saturday. Yu can find Je and sign up if (yu’re) willing t help. Everyne wh takes part in the activity will receive a medal. I’ll jin yu t if I have time.
