      2) 能够用英语谈论他人的性格特点。

    2.能力目标:能够恰当表述对他人的看法,并能用适当的事例佐证;

    能够分辨一封信中的正式用语和非正式用语。

    3.情感目标:在讨论中能够发现同学身上的闪光点,并能向他学习。

    教学重难点:

      如何用恰当的事例作为佐证来谈论其他人的能力。

    教学步骤:

    I. Presentation:

    T: Today I will introduce some new friends to you. Can you see the four students in front of the class? They are giving a new lesson to the others. They are really hardworking, aren’t they? And I think it’s very brave of them to stand in front of the others and give a new lesson. Can you see the tallest girl? Her name is Liu Hanya. She used to be the monitor in my class. Now she has graduated and is studying in a high school. When she was my monitor, she could organize class meetings very well. When her classmates met up with some problems, she was always willing to help them.

    So, what do you think of her?

    Ss: Very organized, helpful, clever and brave.

    T: What personal qualities do you think are the most important to be a monitor?

    Ss: (helpful, organized, brave …)

    II. Listening and practicing:

    1. Listening:

    The Students’ Union needs a new chair-person. Millie and her classmates are talking about the most suitable person to be a new chairperson of the Students Union. Lets listen to the tape and answer the following questions:

            Who does Millie think would be a good chairperson?

            Why does she think so?

    1. Please read after the tape and try to remember the dialogue. Later I’ll ask you to make up your own dialogues, using Millie and Kitty’s as a model.
    2. However, other students don’t agree with her. You are one of them. You need to express your own ideas. Please make up your own dialogues in pairs. You can recommend Suzy or David. Remember: give your reasons.
    3. Maybe you dont think anyone of them is suitable for this position. Who else would be more suitable? This time, you can recommend anybody you know. Maybe he or she is one of your classmates. Just remember: give us enough reasons.

    III. Formal and informal language:

    1. T: Great. You have chosen the most suitable person. In this unit, you need to write a formal letter to recommend him. Do you know the differences between formal and informal language?

    Please look at me:

             Hi, guys! 

             Hello, ladies and gentlemen!

    Which one is formal and which one is informal?

    Ss: The first one is informal; the second one is formal.

    T: Now I will give you another two sentences:

             Excuse me, could I borrow your eraser please?

             Eraser, please!

    This time, which one is formal? Which is informal?

    Ss: The first one is formal, and the second one is informal.

    1. Give them more expressions to decide if they are formal or informal.
    2. T: So far, we have know some formal and informal expressions used in oral English. Do you know the differences between a formal recommendation letter and an informal letter to a close friend?
    3. T: I have an example here. (ask Ss to have a look at the letter in their latest extra homework. Thats a formal recommendation letter.)

    Formal recommendation letter

    Dear Professor,

    I am very happy to recommend an excellent student, Alice Green, to your MBA courses.

    Finally, let me state my strong recommendation for Alice Green. If you have any question or need more information, I will be happy to talk to you. Please feel free to contact me.

    Informal letter:

    3. Conclusion: (try to ask students to make the conclusion. If they cant, teacher can do it.)

    In formal written language, we cant use informal greetings (hi Jim), informal endings (yours, Millie), slang words (it looks cool), informal words (Hope to see you soon), jokes (David has much more hair than my uncle). Abbreviations(No. 1) and contractions(Hes) can be used in formal oral English, but they cant be used in formal written English.

    4. Correct the mistakes in a letter:

      (Correct the mistakes in the letter on P16 in Students books) (explain to the students that we should give our full names at the end of such a formal letter)

    IV. Homework:

    1. 听磁带,熟读Speak up 部分的对话,并能背诵。
    2. 根据课堂讨论的内容编一个新的对话,内容是:推荐一人做班长。
    3. 完成补充练习。
