I was waiting for my train and on the subway station’s floor was a man just sitting there. I looked around and nobody stopped so I just went my way. After a few steps, I turned and asked him whether he needed help. He told me his house was one station further and he would only need to take the train there. So I reached for his hand to help him stand up.
He wanted to take the stairs but I feared that he would hurt himself since he seemed too weak to walk, so I asked him to take the elevator. Even though my mind was trying to turn the danger lights on, I put the thought that I should not go alone with a drunken man out of my mind and accompanied him on the elevator.
We arrived on the platform with no incidents. The man’s knees seemed to soften, so I asked him to rest on a bench. While sitting there, he thanked me, telling me that I saved him. No, I said, I really did nothing; he saved himself as he walked on his own feet.
At the next station, we said our goodbyes. Before I knew it, he left 100 dollars and dashed out of the train. There was no way to give him back his money. I wanted to leave it on the seat, but a young woman who thought it belonged to me ran after me and gave me the note.
My initial reaction to getting that money was of shame and I even felt offended. Then I thought he just wanted to thank me, the best way he knew how. Now, my question is what act of kindness shall I do with these 100 dollars?
4.Why was the man sitting on the subway station’s floor?

You try to keep your eyes wide open while watching a basketball match or a wonderful firework show in case you might miss something exciting in just the blink of an eye. But in fact, humans blink about 15 times per minute on average. Have you ever missed anything because you blinked? Probably not. Why is that?
According to a new study published in the journal Current Biology in September, our brain has the ability to skip the temporary darkness when we blink. It can keep visual information for a short period of time and then put it together to form an image without interruption.
In order to understand how this works, a group of scientists at the German Primate Center and the University Medical Center Go..ttingen in Germany conducted an experiment. In the study, the participants were asked to look at patterns on a screen whose direction could be interpreted in different ways, such as horizontally(水平地) or vertically(垂直地). When one pattern was about to disappear and the next one was about to come, the participants had to indicate the direction that the next pattern would appear.
The researchers found that when the directions of two patterns didn’t match, the area in our brain which is responsible for visual memory was activated. This same area showed less activity when two patterns were in the same direction.
“The medial prefrontal cortex(前额叶皮层) adjusts current visual information with previously obtained information, and thus enables us to perceive the world with more stability, even when we briefly close our eyes to blink,” Caspar Schwiedrzik explained in Science Daily. He is the first author of the study and also a scientist at the German Primate Center.
8.We don’t miss anything when blinking because our brain can ________.
    A.deal with the missing image
    B.remember all that we see
    C.imagine what our eyes miss
D.put our pieces of memory together
9.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A.Our brain.
    B.Visual information.
    C.Current Biology.
    D.The temporary darkness.
10.What do we know about the experiment?
A.The two patterns appear at the same time.
B.Visual memory can be more activated by similarity.
    C.Participants can interpret patterns differently.
D.The different directions activated visual memory.
11.What would be the best title for this passage?
    A.The Brain’s Structure
    B.The Brain’s Activated Patterns
    C.The Brain’s Special Skill
    D.The Brain’s Orientation
    D
Running is often tiring and a lot of hard work, but nothing beats the feeling you get after finishing a long workout around the track.
But while it’s long been believed that endorphins(内啡肽)—chemicals in the body that cause happiness—are behind the socalled “runner’s high”, a study suggested that there may be more to this phenomenon than we previously knew.
According to a recent study published by a group of scientists from several German universities, a group of chemicals called endocannabinoids(内源性大麻素) may actually be responsible for this familiar great feeling.
To test this theory, the scientists turned to mice.
Both mice and humans release high levels of endorphins and endocannabinoids after exercise, along with many other chemicals. After exercising on running wheels, the mice seemed happy and relaxed and displayed no signs of anxiety.
But after being given a drug to block their endorphins they changed. However, when their endocannabinoids were block with a different drug, the runner’s high symptoms seemed to fade.
“The longheld notion of endorphins being responsible for the runner’s high is false. Endorphins are effective pain relievers, but only when it comes to the pain in your body and muscles you feel after working out,” Patrick Lucas Austin wrote on a science blog.
Similar studies are yet to be carried out on humans, but it’s already well known that exercise is a highly effective way to get rid of stress or anxiety.
The UK’s National Health Service even prescribes(开药方) exercise for patients who are suffering from depression.
“Being depressed can leave you feeling low in energy, which might put you off being more active. Regular exercise can boost your mood if you have depression, and it’s especially useful for people with mild to moderate(中等的) depression,” it wrote on its website.
It seems like nothing can beat that feeling we get after a good workout, even if we don’t fully understand where it comes from. At least if we’re feeling down, we know that all we have to do is put on our running shoes.
12.What did scientists from German universities recently discover?
A.Working out is a highly effective way to treat depression.
B.The runner’s high could be caused by endocannabinoids.
C.Endorphins may contribute to one’s high spirits after running.
D.The level of endorphins and endocannabinoids could affect one’s mood.
13.The scientists gave mice drugs in their experiment to ________.
A.find what reduces the runner’s high symptoms
B.see the specific symptoms of the runner’s high
C.identify what is responsible for the runner’s high
D.test what influences the level of endocannabinoids released
14.The underlined word “notion” in Paragraph 7 has the closest meaning to “________”.
    A.effect B.goal
    C.question D.belief
15.According to the UK’s National Health Service, regular workouts ________.
A.are the best way to treat depression
    B.can help ease depression symptoms
C.only work for those with serious depression
D.can help people completely recover from depression

    33.B 解析:根据空前的“brilliant”以及空后的“a new person turned up”可推知,手术非常成功(success)。
    34.B 解析:根据上文男孩问父亲的话可推知,男孩觉得自己为对方做得不够(enough),故选B。
35.D 解析:根据上文中的“But the identity of the donor is a secret.”
38.C 解析:根据空后的“find that the mother had no outer ears”,并结合下文中的“Mother said she was ______ she never had her hair cut”可推知,男孩的父亲伸手去把男孩母亲的头发(hair)拢起来。

    Dear editor,
I’m Li Hua. I’ve learned from Changjiang Weekly that 100 student volunteers are wanted and I really want to seize this opportunity to become one of them. For one thing, I have such a good command of English that I can communicate freely with the participants in English. Additionally, I’m a crazy fan of sports, which enables me to share something in common with the participants so that I will get along well with them. As an outgoing and helpful girl, I’m always willing to give a helping hand to those in need. Having participated in several similar activities before, I know well what to expect in the event and how to handle emergencies. I am sure that I’ll be qualified enough to live up to your expectations. I would appreciate it if you could give me a chance.
    Looking forward to your reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
