Unit4 单元测试第一部分阅读第一节 阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项。AI have recently moved to Hamburg in Germany and have always heard that Germans just wear jeans or some strange clothes. Since I moved here though,I have found this to actually be completely false and I think I would prefer it if they did just wear jeans, so I could do the same!Hamburg is a very big shopping city. Apart from RSM, NEWYORKER and MANGO, I have found a NEW LOOK and a new Topshop have recently just opened. These shops are quite popular in the UK and sell clothes which are always considered as very “fashionable”. Another thing I am really struggling with, as well as trying to be fashionable, is that I am trying to find the right clothes for the weather. I have found in Hamburg one minute it is nice and sunny but the next minute it is pouring with rain! One day it might start off really rainy and cold but by lunch time it is sunny and really hot, so wearing a coat is not practical. In general, however, I think it has also got cold here very quickly and it already feels like the winter that I am used to. I frequently go out in my winter coat, hat, gloves and scarf while many other people are still only wearing jeans or leather jackets. I don’t understand how they do it as I am always freezing. Which is better—to blend (使混合)in with fashion or be warm? I think I would rather be warm and maybe look like a bit of a banana in a huge coat than be shivering all day. What do you think? Clearly I am missing something here as I seem to be the only one struggling over these fashion decisions. l. In Hamburg, the writer has found Germans_________. A. care more about what to wearB. don’t always wear jeansC. like wearing fashionable clothesD. like wearing jeans2. Shopping in Hamburg is very_________. A. difficult B. funnyC. exciting D. convenient3. What does the underlined word “ shivering ” probably mean?A. Wandering. B. Searching. C. Shaking. D. Watching. BTwo British teachers have broken the world record for the longest journey in a tuk-tuk after pulling their failing vehicle for 43 miles. Richard Sears and Nick Gough traveled 37, 500 kilometers around the world and passed through 37 countries. They did this to support the grassroots education project in Africa, Asia and South America. The pair, who set off from London, thought their expedition was over when the vehicle started to fail. When the tuk-tuk broke, they were only 70 kilometers away from their destination. They decided to pull it the rest of the way. The tuk-tuk, which weighs 800 kilograms, was pulled in turns by Richard and Nick over three days. On arrival in Chepen, Peru, they discovered a mechanic who specialized in tuk-tuks and managed to fix it. The pair were back on the road and aiming for their next goal. Along their journey they had to tackle deserts and jungles. They also survived close encounters with elephants in Uganda and Botswana and an accident in Malaysia. The greatest hardship on the tuk-tuk was the mountain ranges lying in their path, including the Alps, the Himalayas and the Andes. Nick and Richard uncovered some inspirational projects across Africa,Asia and South America. They witnessed firsthand the educational challenges facing these areas today. They joined street children in the slums of Cairo, Khartoum, Kampala, Mumbai and Phnom Penh. They visited Congolese refugees(难民) in camps in Eastern Burundi. They witnessed how education could free sex-workers in Delhi and victims of human trafficking in Nepal. The pair established The Tuk Tuk Educational Trust, a U. K. registered charity. Talking about their motivation, Richard said:“The world’s leaders have made a commitment to achieving universal primary education but, in spite of this pledge (誓言,承诺), over 57 million primary-aged children worldwide are still out of school; many more are in school, though still cannot access quality learning opportunities. ”4. Why did the two teachers travel the world?A. To support an education project. B. To create a new world record. C. To entertain themselves. D. To challenge themselves. 5. How far did the two teachers pull the tuk-tuk each day on average?A. A little more than 30 kilometers. B. About 14 miles. C. 43 miles. D. 70 kilometers. 6. What is the third paragraph mainly about?A. How they realized their next goal. B. Their exciting experience on the road. C. The beautiful scenery of famous mountains. D. The difficulties and dangers they faced in the journey. 7. Which of the following best describes the two teachers?A. Curious and brave. B. Humorous and generous. C. Courageous and responsible. D. Efficient and honest. CAuckland is New Zealand’s largest urban area with a population of just over a million. It is not, however, the capital, although it was at one time, until the capital moved to Wellington. Auckland is the centre of commerce and industry, and is perhaps the most energetic, prosperous and multicultural city in New Zealand. The city’s landscape is decided by volcanos, the twin harbors, bays, beaches and islands. Its nickname “the city of sails” is very suitable. Auckland has more boats for each person than anywhere else in the world. Auckland has many volcanos, many of which currently afford great views of the city. And Auckland’s shiny waters seem to attract people from every point. It is a water-lovers’ best place, with some of the best beaches, for swimming, diving, fishing, sailing, windsurfing and water sports in the country. Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. It is also the cultural, administrative and political centre of the country. Two aspects of the city that will immediately strike any visitor are the harbor and hilly landscape. Everywhere you go, the sounds and the smell of the ocean hang in the air,and green hills and valleys wrap you in a bear hug. At night, Wellington offers a spectacular, shimmering cityscape that is unlike almost anywhere else in the world. Even after seeing it for a hundred times, it still takes your breath away. Wellington is a scenic, windy and diverse place. It has some of the best museums, art galleries, restaurants and coffee houses in the country. It is the storehouse for the nation’s historic, cultural and artistic treasures. Being the first place where European settlers arrived, it also boasts lots of historic streets and buildings. Wellington plays host to an excellent festival of the arts every two years. 8. From the passage, we know that Auckland used to_________. A. host a festival of the artsB. afford great views of the cityC. be the capital of New ZealandD. have more boats than any other country in the world9. Auckland is the best city in New Zealand for people to_________. A. see green hillsB. do water sportsC. study New Zealand cultureD. visit historic streets and buildings10. What’s the author’s attitude towards the cityscape in Wellington?A. Critical. B. Neutral. C. Favourable. D. Indifferent. 11. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Auckland and WellingtonB. Welcome to New ZealandC. The Capital of New ZealandD. The Landscape of New ZealandDReading books and looking at pictures are great, but nothing facilitates (促进)learning like travel, especially for teenagers. Not only do they get to see a world beyond their neighborhood, they also get to experience it, feel it, taste it, hear it and better understand the world around them. After nearly four decades in the classroom and traveling the world, Phyllis Duvall Bailey knew this perhaps better than anyone else. Becoming involved in the work in AKA Sorority Inc in the US,she worked to educate children about the United Nations. There was no doubt in Bailey’s mind that the lessons would mean so much more if the students could see things themselves. Starting in 2015,Bailey, 82,set out to take her students to the UN Headquarters in New York City to give them a “Window Seat to the World”,and thus transformed them into global citizens. Indeed, it is a great opportunity to give students national and international exposure. Since Bailey saw the students as future leaders, she was desperate to expose them to the UN,its mission, its agendas (议程)and its supporting organizations. She decided to take out $ 10, 000 of her own money to pay for the late June trip, which was enough to take 10 students aged 14—17 for a four-night stay in New York. There, they had guided tours of the UN Headquarters and the Port of New York(纽约港). It was Quenyaun Payne’s first trip to the city and Taylor Sappington’s second. Payne, 17,is a senior at Mceachem High School in the state of Georgia, the US. Sappington, 15,is a junior at There all High School in Atlanta, Georgia, the US. Both said their visit to the UN was inspiring. “I saw not only how countries were working together but also how they’re focused on common goals like global warming and keeping peace, ” Sappington said. Payne commented, “The trip was amazing. I’m so thankful that Mrs. Bailey made it possible. ”Actually, there are a lot of people grateful for the retired teacher’s effort. The United Nations Association of Atlanta recently gave Bailey its Humanitarian Award, and the United Nations Association of the US awarded her with the National Education Award. But Bailey wasn’t looking for recognition or even gratitude. Over those four days in New York, she’d already felt it and seen it in the eyes of those 10 teenagers,Payne and Sappington included, who made the trip. “It has been a real joy to get to see and watch their reaction to new experiences,” she said. 12. The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refers to__________. A. the benefits of travelB. good reading habitsC. new teaching methodsD. the things teenagers like13. How did Bailey help students?A. She offered them voluntary opportunities at the UN. B. She paid for trips that helped them see the world. C. She paid for them to go to school in other countries. D. She taught them some useful lifelong reading skills. 14. What can we infer from Sappington’s words?A. He determined to work for the UN in the future. B. He showed no interest in global affairs at all. C. He found the trip to the UN greatly instructive. D. He wanted to visit New York City once again. 15. What made Bailey most joyful according to the passage?A. Students5 gratitude. B. Social recognition. C. Students’ gains. D. Official awards. 第二节 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填 入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。The world is a big place, and there are many, many different places you can visit. 16 First of all, traveling allows us to escape our daily routines and expand perspectives, because seeing new places and gaining new experiences can broaden our horizons. Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time—about eight hours after you wake up—your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later. In many parts of the world, people take naps (小睡)in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap—even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________参考答案及解析:1. That means travelers can arrange the schedule freely and enjoy the journey at a lower cost. Inviting as it seems to be,accommodation conditions are often far from satisfactory. What’s worse, people worry about budget travelers’ safety. But I still like it very much. It can provide travelers with chances to develop their problem-solving ability in unexpected situations. However, safety first is what they should never forget. 第二节One possible version:Many people feel a little sleepy in the early afternoon. This is because their body temperature goes down about eight hours after they wake up. (要点 1) In many places of the world, people take naps, especially in warmer climates.
