We Britns have abut 60 wrds fr happiness: blissfulness, ecstasy, pleasure, list is as varied as it is surprising, given that we nly just scraped int the tp 20 happiest cuntries in the wrld this year. In the decade 3 the first Wrld Happiness Reprt was released in 2012, fur cuntries have held the tp psitin: Denmark, Switzerland, Nrway and nw Finland. It’s based n an evaluatin in which respndents are asked t assess the verall happiness f their current lives n a scale f ne t 10.
Fr the furth year running, the UK has slipped dwn the glbal happiness rankings, 4 (drp) tw places t number 19. Even mre wrryingly, hwever, the 2022 glbal Oracle happiness reprt fr the UK specifically fund that nearly half f Britns have nt felt true happiness in tw years. We’re currently behind the US, Israel, New Zealand and Luxemburg, but mercifully ahead f the likes f Afghanistan and Lebann-currently the tw 5 (happy) cuntries in the wrld. This persistent decline in British cntentment is cncerning.
6 (find) ut what we miserable Britns can leam frm the Finns, I went t Lake Saimaa — a three-and-a-half-hur drive frm Helsinki — t take part in a masterclass in happiness. It is a resrt designed arund taking things slwly. Each villa has its wn sauna (桑拿浴), 7 (set)in a fragrant pine frest. 8 many friends rightly pinted ut, hw culd anyne nt be happy here?
In many ways, thugh, my admittedly luxurius stay revealed t me 9 the Finns apprach happiness fr everyne. There’s n dubt they have gt a lt f things right — their lve f saunas, fr ne. Knwn fr their health benefits, saunas are fantastic fr calming the mind. And with 10 estimated 3 millin saunas fr a ppulatin f just ver 5.5 millin, they are certainly integrated int everyday life.

Ariunbaatar desn’t have a typical backgrund fr a cntestant in ne f the wrld’s mst celebrated pera cntests. That backstry arused my curisity — s much s that three mnths later I was n a flight t Ulaanbaatar with a radi prducer and suitcase f audi equipment. I had the same basic knwledge many westerners share abut Mnglia: Genghis Khan, Gbi desert, furry camels, wild hrses, wnderful thrat singers. My guidebk described a prud natin. “It is rude t turn dwn an ffer f hrse’s milk,” I read, “fr it is cnsidered a gesture f friendship.”
Internatinal wins have made Ariunbaatar famus at hme. Pliticians hpe his career will secure Mnglia’s psitin n the pera map-prtraying it as a mdern natin. He says he has n intentin t leave Mnglia. His family still travel n the plain, still ride n hrseback, still packup their tents t fllw new grasslands. “Being with them n the land is what gives me inspiratin t sing.” he says. “Wherever I am, that is what I imagine when I sing.”

I knw when the snw melts and the first rbins (知更鸟) cme t call, when the laughter f children returns t the parks and playgrunds, smething wnderful is abut t happen.
Spring cleaning.
I’ll admit spring cleaning is a difficult ntin fr mdern families t grasp. Tday’s busy families hardly have time t lad the dishwasher, much less clean the drmat. Asking the family t spend the weekend cllecting winter dg piles frm the melting snw in the backyard is like annuncing there will be n mre Wi-Fi. It interrupts the natural rder.
“Hney, hw abut spending the weekend beating the rugs, srting thrugh the bxes in the basement and painting ur bedrm a nice lemny yellw?” I ask.
“Can we at least wait until the NBA matches are ver?” my husband answers.
But I tell my family, spring cleaning can’t wait. The temperature has risen just enugh t melt snw but nt enugh fr Little League practice t start. Sme flwers are peeking ut f the thawing grund, but there is n lawn t seed, nr garden t tend. Newly wakened frm ur winter’s hibernatin, yet still needing extra blankets at night, we pen ur windws t the first fresh air flating n the breeze with all f the natural wrld demanding “Awake and be clean!”
Bilgists ffer a thery abut this primal impulse t clean ut every drawer and clset in the huse at spring’s first light, which has t d with melatnin, the sleepytime hrmne ur bdies prduce when it’s dark. When spring’s light cmes, the melatnin declines, and suddenly we are awakened t the dusty, virus- filled huse we’ve been hibernating in fr the past fur mnths.
I tell my family abut the science and psychlgy f a gd healthy cleaning at spring arrival. I speak t them abut life’s greatest rewards waiting in the remval f sap scum (浮垢) frm the bathtub, which hasn’t been prperly cleaned since the first snwfall.
“I’ll d it,” says the eldest child, a 21-year-ld cllege student wh lives at hme. “Yu will? Ww!” I exclaim.
Maybe after all these years, he’s finally grasped the cncept. Maybe he’s expressing his rightful psitin as eldest child and rle mdel. Or maybe he’s ging t Flrida fr a break in a cuple f weeks and he’s being nice t me, the financial-aid fficer.
N matter. Seeing my adult sn willingly cleaning that dirty bathtub gives me hpe fr the future f his 12-year-ld brther wh, instead f wrking, was fund t be sleeping in the seat f the windw he was suppsed t be cleaning.
“Awake and be clean!” I say.
43.Accrding t the passage, fr mdern families, spring cleaning ________.

A Victry fr Wmen in Ecnmics
Ecnmic histry has lng been dcumented thrugh a male perspective, putting emphasis n the cntributins f men and their viewpints. Fr prf, just lk t the Nbel Memrial Prize in Ecnmic Sciences. 47 The third, Harvard labr ecnmist Claudia Gldin, wn the prize in 2023, fr her decades f wrk studying the gender pay gap.
48 This narrw view might nt appeal t everyne. Wmen in particular tend t be drawn t areas that have a direct impact n scial challenges, such as health ecnmics, develpment ecnmics and educatin ecnmics. But thse fields dn’t get as much attentin and are smetimes nt even recgnized as ecnmics at all.
Nt nly are wmen insufficiently represented as ecnmists, ecnmics as a field has histrically ignred the rle wmen play in the ecnmy. 49 This resulted in ecnmists failing t appreciate the unpaid labr that wmen prvided in husehlds and cntinuing t shape their analyses based n their traditinal gender rle beliefs.
Gldin has challenged the traditinal male-centered wrld and turned the attentin t wmen’s ecnmic rles and challenges. Her Nbel recgnitin isn’t merely an hnr fr her individual achievements. It shws the wrld hw inclusive, diverse and intercnnected the field truly is. 50
A.Ecnmics isn’t just the bring science — it’s a human science.
B.Gldin’s research advcates the establishment f supprt systems fr families t address the gender pay gap.
C.Part f the prblem is that ecnmics is ften identified with finance, banking and the stck market.
D.It wasn’t a victry just fr her but fr wmen in the field.
E.It’s been awarded t 90 men since 1969 — and just three wmen.
F.Traditinal mdels ften versimplified husehlds’ decisin-making prcesses and did nt accunt fr wmen’s cntributins.
Summary Writing (10分)
51.Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Summarize the main idea and the main pint(s) f the passage in n mre than 60 wrds. Use yur wn wrds as far as pssible.
e-learning: Hazy past—better future?
Hw much f an effect des technlgy have n students’ learning? A significant ne, it seems, accrding t experts. Currently available technlgies, the mst imprtant f which are cmputers and the Internet, apparently prvide a learning envirnment in which prblem-slving and intellectual enquiry can flurish. The prcess f learning in the classrm may becme significantly mre effective as students can deal with infrmatin n the cmputer. Or s the thery ges. My wn viewpint is rather different, I’m afraid.
Cmputers have been arund fr tw decades as part f schl equipment. There are, f curse, bstacles like csts t vercme, but it’s just a matter f time and effrt. This is because schls have dne what every rganisatin des when it sees an innvatin—it applies the innvatin t its existing mdel, which adds cst but desn’t transfrm the standard classrm. We have, during that perid, spent ver $60 billin n them, but in my view they seem t have had little r n effect n learning in schls. Cntent is king and the mde f delivery is irrelevant. If a teacher makes the subject matter interesting, it des nt matter what, if any, equipment is used.
Hwever, change is n the hrizn. I think student-centred learning will becme the nrm and transfrm educatin. Cmputers will pave the way fr far mre independent learning. Students wh currently dn’t have access t schls r teachers are nw able t get nline. They can study frm hme thanks t the fact that mre learning prgrammes are being written fr learners wh are frced by their circumstances t be self-sufficient. This wuld prve especially beneficial in thse areas f the wrld where quality educatin is limited r extremely expensive. Therefre, in a few years’ time we culd have a cmpletely different cnversatin abut technlgy and its impact n learning.

47.根据前文“Ecnmic histry has lng been dcumented thrugh a male perspective, putting emphasis n the cntributins f men and their viewpints. Fr prf, just lk t the Nbel Memrial Prize in Ecnmic Sciences. (长期以来,经济学史一直是通过男性视角来记录的,强调男性的贡献和他们的观点。看看诺贝尔经济学奖就知道了。)”可知,此处是通过诺贝尔经济学奖来表明经济学史一直以来都是强调男性的贡献和他们的观点,所以选项E“自1969年以来,该奖项已经授予了90名男性,只有3名女性。”切合文意。故选E。
48.根据后文“This narrw view might nt appeal t everyne. (这种狭隘的观点可能不会吸引所有人。)”可知,此处是指人们对经济学的认知往往很狭隘,所以选项C“问题的部分原因在于,经济学通常被等同于金融、银行业和股市。”切合文意。故选C。
49.根据前文“Nt nly are wmen insufficiently represented as ecnmists, ecnmics as a field has histrically ignred the rle wmen play in the ecnmy. (不仅女性作为经济学家的代表性不足,经济学作为一个领域在历史上也忽视了女性在经济中所扮演的角色。)”和后文“This resulted in ecnmists failing t appreciate the unpaid labr that wmen prvided in husehlds and cntinuing t shape their analyses based n their traditinal gender rle beliefs. (这导致经济学家无法理解女性在家庭中提供的无偿劳动,并继续根据他们传统的性别角色信念来塑造他们的分析。)”可知,此处是指传统上往往忽视女性对家庭的贡献,所以选项F“传统模式往往过分简化了家庭的决策过程,没有考虑到妇女的贡献。”切合文意。故选F。
50.根据前文“Her Nbel recgnitin isn’t merely an hnr fr her individual achievements. It shws the wrld hw inclusive, diverse and intercnnected the field truly is. (她的诺贝尔奖不仅仅是对她个人成就的荣誉。它向世界展示了这个领域的包容性、多样性和相互关联性。)”可知,此处是讲经济学并不像人们以为的那样狭隘,所以选项A“经济学不仅仅是一门无聊的科学——它是一门人文科学。”切合文意。故选A。
