In the study, we asked cllege students t brainstrm — withut technlgy — all the ways a paper clip can be used. A mnth later, we asked them t d the same, but using ChatGPT. We fund that AI can be a useful brainstrming tl, quickly generating ideas that can spark creative explratin. But there are als ptential negative effects n students’ creative thinking skills and self-cnfidence. While students reprted that it was helpful t “have anther brain”, they als felt that using AI was “the easy way ut” and didn’t allw them t think n their wn.
The results call fr a thughtful apprach t using AI in classrms and striking a balance that inspires students’ creativity while utilizing AI’s capabilities. The gd news is that the students in ur study generated mre diverse and detailed ideas when using AI. They fund that AI was useful fr kick-starting brainstrming sessins.
When it cmes t brainstrming with AI, sme students viced cncerns abut ver-reliance n the technlgy, fearing it might hurt their wn thughts and, cnsequently, cnfidence in their creative abilities. Sme students reprted a “fixatin f the mind”, meaning that nce they saw the AI’s ideas, they had a hard time cming up with their wn. Sme students als questined the riginality f ideas generated by AI. Our research nted that while using ChatGPT imprved students’ creative utput individually, the AI’s ideas tended t be repetitive verall.
The study results indicate that allwing students t practice creativity independently first will strengthen their belief in themselves and their abilities. Once they cmplete this, AI can be useful in furthering their learning, much like teaching lng divisin t students befre intrducing a calculatr. That’s t say, teaching students t be creative thinkers rather than rely n AI fr answers is the key t answering the questin mentined abve.
