Half a century ag, a by called William Lindsay in Britain had never thught that a dream f his wuld drive him t spend ten years in a freign cuntry. When in primary schl, he lved studying maps. The saw-tth (锯齿般的) line in China caught his eye. He decided t visit the line, that is, the Great Wall f China.
Driven by this dream, Lindsay set ff n his Great Wall jurney in 1984. Hwever, he didn't realize its difficulty. Only a few days later, he became ill and had t give up his plan. After returning t Britain, he began t exercise mre ften. He even learned sme basic Chinese.

Chinese years are named accrding t the twelve zdiac (生肖) animals. But what d we call this year, the Year f the Dragn r the Year f Lng? The Chinese dragn, r Lng, is a mythical animal. It's made up f the parts f nine animals. It's said that the Chinese dragn can fly and has the magical pwer t cntrl wind and rain.
Of all the 12 Chinese zdiac animals, Lng is ne f peple's favrites. That's because it has many gd meanings, such as pwer and gd luck. When peple name newbrn babies, "龙," the character fr Lng, is ppular. It is hped that they will grw up t be as strng and energetic as a dragn.
As we see in mvies, the Western dragn has the bdy f a big snake, the huge wings f bats, and strng and sharp claws. It is usually a bad character in stries t be beaten by heres.
Accrding t written recrds, Lng was first translated as "dragn" in The Travels f Marc Pl in 1299. Since Lng is similar t the Western dragn in sme ways—bth are huge, fr example— "dragn" may have been the best wrd t describe Lng at that time. But it's very different frm all the meanings that Lng has in Chinese culture. In a way, it can cnfuse (迷惑) Westerners.
