In lab studies, children tested at ages 4 and 6 shwed mre willingness t give up the tkens (代金券) they had earned t fictinal children in need

mdeled such kindness. The study initially included 74 preschl-age children and their mthers. They were invited back tw years later, resulting in 54

“At bth ages, children with better physilgical regulatin and with mthers wh expressed strnger cmpassinate lve were likely t dnate
mre f their earnings,” said Paul Hastings, UC Davis prfessr f psychlgy. “Cmpassinate mthers likely develp emtinally clse relatinships
with their children while als prviding an early example f satisfying the needs f thers,” researchers said in the study, published in Nvember in
Frntiers in Psychlgy” Emtin Science.
In each lab exercise, after attaching a mnitr t recrd children’s heart-rate activity, the examiner tld the children they wuld be earning tkens
fr a variety f activities, and that the tkens culd be turned in fr a prize. The tkens were put int a bx, and each child eventually earned 20 prize
